Posted Breed: Dachshund. See Jake's HomepageGo to our official websiteYou can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Jake is a very loving gentleman with great manners! He has just about perfected house training, knows how to use doggie stairs to climb up onto a human bed or couch, and is very active for his age. Jake's only issue when we got him was dental- his mouth was a real mess! Thanks to the miracle of some great dental work, a lot of TLC, and a strong desire to get well, he now has nice breath and his three remaining teeth are clean! Jake already feels much better with all that nasty stuff out of his mouth and he is recovering very nicely from such a major procedure. Jake may not be a puppy, but he sure acts young and he is one of the nicest, best-behaved little guys we've had the pleasure to meet in a long time. Jake will be a perfect pet for someone who appreciates a loving well-behaved senior!

Dachshund

A.K.A. : teckel
Overview: The Dachshund (German for 'badger dog') is a family favorite. Playful, friendly, and full of charm, he makes a great pet.
Breed Group: Hound
Weight (lbs): miniature - 11lb and under, standard - over 11lb (
Height (in): 5-9
Colors: Solid red, sable, or cream; black and tan, chocolate and tan, wild boar and tan, gray and tan, or fawn and tan, brindle.
Coat: Coat can be smooth, long, or wire-haired. The hairs on the Wire-haired Dachshund should lie flat and be as hard as possible.
Character: Dachshunds are brave, intelligent, and independent.
Temperament: This breed is fairly reserved around strangers, but will form a strong bond with its family. They can be somewhat assertive toward other dogs.
Care: The Dachshund needs occasional brushing to remove dead hairs. The long-haired variety can be prone to tangles, so they may require more grooming. The wire-haired variety should be plucked twice yearly.
Training: This breed can be easy to train (particularly the long-haired variety). However, all varieties require a firm and consistent approach to keep their minds on track.
Activity: The Dachshund needs a fair amount of exercise, so long walks are required.
Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: This breed is prone to spinal disc problems and can develop heart disease, urinary tract problems, and diabetes.
Life Expectancy: 12-15

More About Dachshund Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

    • Einstein - Dachshund Dog For Adoption

      Einstein

      Breed: Dachshund
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund. Einstein came to us from a shelter where he was turned in by someone who said "he's sick" and didn't want him. It turns out the boy had a pair of infected upper teeth that had abscessed, as well as a massive case of digestive worms, so it's no wonder he was losing weight and didn't feel well! The bad teeth were removed (the rest were in good shape), he's had wormer, and he is already starting to feel more energetic and gain back some weight. Einstein is a happy old guy who prances while he walks! He enjoys going outside for restroom breaks, and he is fine with most other dogs. Einstein does whine a lot, probably a legacy of his previous owner and his poor health, but he settles down once he's comfy. He was not very nice initially when approached at the kennel in the shelter, but once we got him into a home, Einstein became incredibly sweet and appreciative. He will tell you when he wants out, loves to eat (making up for lost weight and tooth/tummy issues), and is very smart- he figured out dog steps onto the bed almost immediately! Sure he's old, but Einstein doesn't care; he just wants to be loved!

Posted Breed: Dachshund. Sam is a cute, short-legged little piebald-colored Dachshund. Sam is small, has excellent behavior, and is loving without being overly needy. When he isn't actively exploring or keeping himself busy, Sam comes around regularly to visit, cuddle for a while, and get a bit of positive attention, then enjoys being laid back around the house and being a happy dog. Sam has had IVDD (back issues) although he hasn't required surgery. He will need a calm lifestyle with no jumping or running. If you like a good looking mini with a heart of gold and great manners, Sam could be the one for you!

Posted Breed: Dachshund. Cider is a standard sized lady with a bounce in her step, great manners, and a sweet temperament. Cider is a bit skittish at first, especially if startled, but she gets over her shyness quickly. She came to us with some severe flea allergies and skin/coat problems, but she's already growing in a beautiful, healthy coat now that she's had preventative and some good nutrition. Cider had a couple small mammary bumps removed while she was spayed but the lab work showed no problems, so she's in good health. She's a happy girl who acts and looks younger than her age. Cider is a great pet- doesn't bark much at all, immediately picked up on the house training, and enjoys comfy time around the house. She's probably not a good candidate for a high-energy lifestyle or for young children (she doesn't enjoy impulsive or surprising movement near her when she's relaxing), but she's basically just a loving, easy-going girl who is a very loyal, appreciative pet!

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund. DJ is a cute, spunky little guy who is shy at first but is a great friend once he knows you're nice. DJ is a cuddle-puppy at heart. He's small but not too fragile, and he really has some of the best qualities of both a Dachshund and a Chihuahua without the aggression that is sometimes associated with "Chiweenies". This little boy really rates a furever home. He's a good pet, a loving boy, and very cute!

Posted Breed: Dachshund. Cowboy came from a not very wonderful breeder situation, but he's incredibly social for a dog with that background. He is also very appreciative! Cowboy spends most of his time enjoying being indoors on comfy beds, getting enough to eat with good, premium pet food, and beind treated with love by the people he meets. Cowboy's teeth were so infected he had to have all but two lower teeth extracted. He is also heartworm positive, although at his age we are going with the recommendation to do the "slow kill" method, which consists of monthly preventative so no new heartworms form while those already on board die off at the end of their life cycle. Cowboy is a good boy, and other than having a bit of confusion over the whole housetraining thing, he's a great pet! He is learning rapidly and now that he's neutered we are optimistic the house training will also improve. It's our pleasaure to welcome Cowboy to a better life that he very much deserves and is thankful for!

Jerry is young and trainable and does well with praise. Jerry learns commands quickly but didn't come with a lot of practiced social behavior. He is willful and spirited, and takes pride in "getting it right". Jerry is a bit possessive of his owner and is still being taught that he doesn't need to be over-protective. With an experienced owner and patient but consistent reinforcement he will become the best pet ever! He is young, handsome, and ready for a lifetime of loyal loving; Jerry may just be the one for you!

You will never know a more loyal pet than Jessica once she bonds with you, but it will take the several day "getting to know you" period for her to adapt. She would be great for a home without a lot of new people coming and going and where someone is home with her a lot. Like many Chiweenies, Jessica is easily intimidated by larger dogs or dogs who are too "alpha". She needs a patient adopter who knows that she is well worth working with! No children, please.

Like many with that genetic combo, though, Widget is deaf. He has got some vision, but not very clear, and he is sensitive to bright sunlight so he should not be exposed to it for long periods of time. Widget is a high-energy boy who likes to play and run. He is a bit jumpy if he doesn't see someone coming, which is natural considering he can't hear anyone approach. Widget has a sweet nature- he likes to give doggie kisses and cuddle when he is in one of his relaxed moments. Widget is a large boy and is also vocal (he can't hear himself bark) so he is not a good choice for young children or apartments. Widget's foster is working with him on sign language. He is a smart boy and learns fast, but he is a youngster so it will take time and consistency for him to master them. In short, Widget is a good boy, a happy, energetic pet, and needs an adopter who will understand and appreciate him for what he is!
