Posted Breed: Dachshund / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Shadow! He was rescued in late 2013 when he was surrendered by a homeless person who could not give him the quality of life he deserved. He seems to be about 3-4 years old, we believe he is a Doxie/Chi mix. He is house broken, a great travel buddy. great with dogs of all size (as long as they don't mind him trying to be the boss hehe) great with kids of all ages and he is the biggest sweetheart! The perfect home for Shadow would be a home where he has plenty other dogs/kids to play with, goes on walks, likes to cuddle, likes to travel and take him with, a home where he wouldn't feel left out and would be very much apart of the family! Shadow has been neutered, microchipped and is up to date on all vaccinations. If you would like to schedule a play date with our Shadow please contact us today! :-)

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Australian Kelpie-Scottish Deerhound Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Bakersfield, CA
Posted Breed: Scottish Deerhound / Australian Kelpie / Mixed (short coat). Welcome back Sally! We rescued Sally & her brother Jack when they were about 12 weeks old. They were surrendered to us by a rancher in Kern County. We met both her parents, her mother a Scottish Deerhound and her father an Australian Kelpie were both her ranching dogs. After a few months in foster care Sally was adopted to a Kern County family, but unfortunately had to return her a year later. Thankfully we insure all our adopted dogs come back to the rescue if for some reason they cannot be kept for life. Since Sally has been back she has grown quite a bit, but it still fairly small for a deerhound and we don't anticipate her getting larger than 40 lbs. She is a shy, timid girl but finds comfort following me all around the house from room to room. She does well with my very passive, large breed dogs, two cats and shetland pony. We are still helping her find her place within the pack and she is still being evaluated. She does wonderful with kids and is rather quiet and calm in the house. Sally is trained to sleep in the comfort of her large crate at night, and spends the days enjoying the backyard until I get home from work, then she turns into a lazy house dog ;-) Sally is spayed, microchipped, house-trained and up to date on her vaccines. If you are interested in making Sally apart of your pack and would like to schedule a meet-n-greet or play date with your pets, please contact us!

      Breed: Bulldog-Jack Russell Terrier Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Bakersfield, CA
Posted Breed: Bulldog / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Casper is the friendliest dog in the world! He was found on the outskirts of Bakersfield near Rio Bravo Elementary with another smaller dog; they had been spotted out there for a couple weeks before their trust was gained and they were rescued by a concerned citizen. We took sweet Casper in and had him seen by a vet, neutered, microchipped and given proper vaccines. He is about 2-3 years old we estimate. From his foster mom: "Since having Casper in my home he has blossomed from that scared, insecure boy into a happy, loving and very snuggly best friend of mine! He loves to follow me all around the house and even follows me out into the pony's corral and enjoys playing with her. He has taken to my large breed dogs like he has lived with us forever. He was afraid of the cats at first, would run and cower from them, but now he is much more confident and understand they are not going to hurt him. His favorite time is at the end of the day when I'm relaxing on the couch; that is when he gets lots of snuggles and kisses. Casper stays in the house all day with my other dog while I am at work. He doesn't chew up anything and though he had to be potty trained a bit at first, since he had never been a house pet, he has been accident-free for weeks now! At night he follows suit with the other dogs and sleeps comfortably in his cozy, little crate and wakes up first thing to go potty outside like a good-boy! Casper would make a wonderful companion for someone who enjoys the company of a lap-dog. He does great with my 6-year old niece, just a little timid at first. He loves car rides, and the few times he has ran into the front yard without a leash he comes right back to me. I can't say enough good things about this little guy! And to top it all off he is not a barky-yappy dog. I have hardly heard him make a peep in the month that I've had him. He is a joy to have around and I know he would make a wonderful companion. Good luck. Casper!" If you are interested in meeting Casper for a play date please contact us via email or call 661-717-7029.

      Location: Bakersfield, CA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Angelina is a special girl to us. She was found living under a car in a bad part of Bakersfield with 5, 3-day old puppies with her. They were covered in oil and grease and Angelina looked like she had never been bathed ever. The people who lived nearby had thought this was at least her second litter of pups when we saved her. It took hours to catch her, she was very hesitant. But after taking her babies we finally gained her trust and the rest was history! Since rescuing Angelina back in October 2014, we have found homes for all 5 of her sweet, healthy pups (each one looked totally different!) and Angelina has been spayed and microchipped so she never again has to go through what she went through on the streets ever again. Angelina has come a very long way in the last few months. She has become apart of her foster pack and gets along well with a house full of dogs, cats and kids. She is quiet and keeps to herself, but she enjoys being apart of a family for the first time in her life. We hope a loving, stable home will come for her soon. All she wants in life is stability and love, and we won't stop until that is what she gets! :-) Contact us today if you would like to meet Angelina!

      Location: Bakersfield, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Annie is a very happy, playful, young and sweet little girl! She will definitely make the perfect new addition to any family, she is wonderful! Annie loves all dogs, cats and kids she meets. She isn't afraid of jumping in with the bigger dogs and trying to steal toys and wrestle, she is a very friendly pup! Annie is about 2-3 years old and we believe she is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix (chiweenie). We can tell she has had at least one litter, but very soon she will be getting spayed and will never have to go through the labor process again! If you would like to meet our little orphan Annie please contact us for a play date or a meet-n-greet. You can also see us at Petco every other Saturday. :-) so happy we were able to save this little precious soul!
