  • Poodle (Miniature)-Unknown Mix Dog For Adoption in Pacolet, SC, USA

    Buckles of S...

    rescue
    Breed: Poodle (Miniature)-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (long coat). Adoption Fee: $I am special. Thank you for your interest in dog who needs a new home. Adoption can be one of the most fulfilling experiences in your life and especially in the life of your new canine companion. A note to those looking at CPR. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. Our job is to find those someone's. Our most successful adopters come to CPR not because they want a dog. They come to us because they want to give a dog a home. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. While we like to know what you like in looks, a dog is more than a pretty face. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families. Our descriptions contain all that we know about this dog today. We'll update as more information is known. Are you looking to adopt within the next 30 days? If so please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and complete the application. You'll find it in the menu on the left hand side. You'll also find a total listing of all our dogs available. Just browsing but interested in poodles and poodle mixes? Please drop a note to applications@carolinapoodlerescue.org with your name, address and phone # and email. We'll add you to our mailing list. thanks the CPR Adoption team Date into Rescue: 08/01/2015 Reason for being in rescue: Previous owner released her to a local shelter Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Yes - Diabetes Insipidus. What does that mean? Buckles drinks water - all day - and urinates frequently as a result. This is a rare form of diabetes that is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary hormone (vasopressin) which regulates kidney function. This disorder is very uncommon and is not curable. Here is what happens in the body. Buckles kidney's do not produce the hormone that neutralizes toxins in the body thereby making urine. Her kidney's can accept water but can't process it correctly. Water passes through her body very quickly and that is why she urinates so much, but often her "urine" is just pure water that has passed through. It does not have a urine odor at all and if you wipe it up there is no yellow to it. It is not what is called concentrated. Her body uses water, but Buckles has to consume much more water than a normal dog for her body to get what it needs while her system is pushing it out much faster than it should. Imagine a water hose in the summer running full blast - and you're drinking from it. You can get what you need - and Buckles body grabs what it needs from this rush of water going through it - but much of the water is wasted and therefore run on the ground just like our summer water hose. Your body functions more like a glass. Her body functions like that hose. Because of this rapid rush of water, Buckles must have access to water at all times so when she needs it,she can get it. If not she will dehydrate and that will lead to death. Buckles is currently on a hormone-replacement medication (given through eye drops twice per day). It is the hormone she is lacking that makes the urine. It is helping some, but is not a cure for her diabetes insipidus. We are working with her to find out what is the best dosage for her. The medication is about $120 per month. Weight: 13 lb Height: est 13 in Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: I'm special! Fence needed? Yes - Buckles is very active and loves to run. What kind of home would be best for me? Buckles does have a "house training" issue only because of her condition. For someone who is retired and is home all the time, her house training isn't much of a problem. She must be taken outside every two hours, and her house training is basically controlled. She would love a house with a doggie door. She goes to the door in her foster home if she needs to go out. She wears diapers if her foster mom is going out more than 2 hours. Buckles cannot be deprived of water as it can be fatal to her. What is my personality like? All that sounds frightening and it is but there is more to Buckles than bad plumbing. Buckles is spunky, friendly and loving. She is energetic and must have a fenced in yard to run in. She gets along with other dogs and cats and would be a great playmate to another dog her size or larger. Buckles is eager to please and bonds quickly. How I act when I first meet new people: Happy, friendly and gregarious. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: est birthdate 2/2/2013 Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. Most of our dogs are at our farm in Pacolet, South Carolina. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. Thank you for considering CPR.

Date into Rescue: 2/8/2017 Reason for being in rescue: NC shelter, owner surrender, owner was moving. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Oreo was heart worm positive when we tested her in Feb of 2017. We have treated her for her heart worms and on 12/13/2017 she has tested negative! No more heart worms! Weight: 79 lbs Height: Estimated 17" at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $125 Fence needed? Not needed but Oreo would love one. What kind of home would be best for me? I would love somewhere to romp and play and run and then come inside for a snooze with someone who loves me! What is my personality like? Oreo came to the rescue as a bonded pair with her little poodle friend, Bailey. We have monitored them closely and have realized Oreo and Bailey have grew apart since they have gotten here and would be better separated. Oreo has grew into herself and realized she loves to romp and play. She is always running and playing in our big field where her other big dog friends play with her. After a full day of play she loves to sun or play in the cool grass. Oreo has a pretty moderate energy level- she does like to run the fields but she also knows when it is time to quiet down. She is pretty independent for the most part but she enjoys having affection as well, She does not need to go to a home with other small animals, she seems to think they are toys! Oreo would make a great addition to the right family! Since leaving Bailey she has found that she doesn't really like little dogs all that much, she likes dogs of her own size! How I act when I first meet new people: Friendly. House trained? Date into Rescue: 2/28/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Released by previous owner because they were relocating to a new place Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? none noted Weight: 45.4 lb Height: About 24 in at the shoulder Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $299 Fence needed? A fence would be helpful until she is acclimated to her new home. What kind of home would be best for me? Brielle needs a quiet, more reserved home with owners that have a soft spot for timid dogs. Brielle is reportedly a 3rd generation shepadoodle - german shepherd and standard poodle. But since she looks so much more like a labrador retriever, we've put that breed instead. Brielle reportedly has some standard poodle in her but we don't see much and she does shed. She is good with other dogs and fine with cats. Update 10/05/17- Brielle has come a long way since she first came to us. She is sweet and will allow some love from people she is with everyday. She wants to trust people and find a forever home, but she just needs time and patience. She does perfectly fine with all dogs, and they help her relax and learn that we people are not so bad. Brielle needs an understanding human that has a soft spot for dogs with a scared side. What is my personality like? Brielle came to the farm as an owner release with a few others. From day one she has always been timid and scared while her other siblings have come out of their shells and found homes. Brielle is the type of dog that will need plenty of one on one time to get her where she needs to be in life. Everyone at the farm has worked with her and she will now take treats out of our hands, but she could really use help in a permanent home to help her grow. She has great potential with a sweet and gentle nature and just needs a special person to help her along her way. How I act when I first meet new people: Cautious but warms up House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? none noted Weight: 57 lb Height: Estimated 10 in at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? A fence would be ideal until leash trained. What kind of home would be best for me? Hank needs a kind, low-key and patient home that does not mind working with him. What is my personality like? Update 7/6/2017: Hank's story is more like a song. His past is rocky which is why he is so unsure of new people, but boy does this dog have potential. Hank has been with us for 6 months and it's so hard to believe that the terrified dog hiding in the back of his pen is now this bright vibrant lap dog. We have put real dedication in this guy and it surely shows. This insecure, troubled soul has turn into a glorified toy hoarder and a huge baby that loves to give kisses. All he really wants is just to be a families dog.. Not a yard ornament, not something to look at when you are bored.. but a real part of your family. Mind you, Hank is still apprehensive of new people, but he has shown us if you are willing to try with him.. he will most definitely try with you. Winning him over just takes a little time and his favorite snack of course.. cheese puffs! He still needs leash work, we think it would be successful with time and a front walking harness. 3/8/2017 Hank came to the rescue from a very under-socialized environment. He is still trying to figure out what being someone's pet really is. Hank still needs work, but he is the more social out of his siblings. He hates leashes and does not understand why he has to have one on in order to walk outside.. He kind of just sits down and does not move but he has gotten better since he has been here. Hank is learning how to sit, and loves meaty treats! He does not care about cats. Once he is used to you he does give affection and loves giving little kisses. How I act when I first meet new people: Weary of new people, it takes a little time but then he is basically a lap dog. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Date into Rescue: 6/3/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Pulled from a rural shelter, was originally found as a stray. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Hugo is heartworm positive (HW+). He will be sent home with a year supply of heartworm medication. He is being treated with a method called the slow kill treatment. He takes a monthly Ivermectin based heartworm preventative and needs to be re-tested for heartworms every 6 months. Once he tests negative, then he can take any kind of heartworm preventative; he is not restricted to Ivermectin based only. PLEASE NOTE our heartworm positive dogs MUST be kept on this method of treatment. Make sure to talk with you vet about this method before submitting an application. Weight: Estimated 13 lb Height: Estimated 11 in at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? A fence would be great until I learn to leash walk. What kind of home would be best for me? I need a home with sweet people willing to love on me once I warm up to them. What is my personality like? I was found in another state and brought to one of their rural shelters as a stray. My past is unsure but I would love to find a family to help me forget all of the bad stuff. I am head shy. If you come at me to fast with your hand I will tuck down because it startles me. I am very curious and love to explore my surroundings. My caregivers say I am timid and I need a little work.. but they all know there is a bright fun guy under all of this fear. 7/12/2017: Since Hugo has been here a few weeks to settle in, we have noticed he is a very head strong type of guy. He does not look for anyone elses opinion and has his own little mind. Hugo is still a little shy but he is showing us more and more of his true personality. Hugo would make a great dog for a person that enjoys independent dogs that knows how to keep themselves happy. 10/05/17- Hugo is a very loving and hyper boy. He loves to play, but can sometimes be too much for other dogs, which Hugo does not like. This means that Hugo needs to be in a home with a dog that is alright with his energy and goofy personality, or a home with no dogs. He absolutely loves all people and will take a belly rub from anyone. Hugo will become a relaxed and lazy boy once he has a little bit of playing time out of his system. How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly but shy. More tips and tidbits: I don't care much for treats or toys so far. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. Weight: 8.4 lbs Height: Estimated 9-10" at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? A fence would be greatly appreciated. Luke is fearful and not leash trained yet. What kind of home would be best for me? Luke needs a home with a family that can understand his situation and his need for learning to trust. No other male dogs is best. What is my personality like? Luke came to the farm with a few others from the same hoarding situation. Although Luke has made improvements, he is still fearful of people. He has his favorites here at the farm that he will let love on him, but if you are not one of those people.. he hides in the corner. Luke would be a great lap dog if someone is willing to put in work and a lot of patience. Notes from caregiver 4/26/2017- " I like this little guy. He growls when he's eating and will go in his crate without any force but he growls and turns round and round when he is in it. I have been holding him since his second week here and he's great unless Gus and Jaq are out with him. I normally keep them separated. If they are in the big area together they are fine but small spaces is a no. He doesn't mind girls but I would be very careful about putting him with boy dogs. He isn't good on a leash he wants to pull you but off leash he stays right there with you. He comes to his name almost every time you call him. I let him in the area outside of Greta's and he didn't wonder too far from me. Almost as if he was scared to go further then the leash even when off leash. When I called him he would run to me and jump up on my leg. He gives great kisses too. He loves to be right with you and have his head and back scratched. He is dying for some one on one attention and shows his appreciation with a sweetness in his eyes and a kiss on your cheek. He doesn't always have a clean crate so I wouldn't say he is crate trained. I think he would be best being the only dog. He was fine with my child he ignored her." How I act when I first meet new people: Fearful House trained? Date into Rescue: 5/2/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release/health of the owner Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? none needed Weight: About 45 lbs Height: est 22" at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Yes What kind of home would be best for me? I need a home with no other smaller animals, and where I can be loved of course! What is my personality like? Charlie is a whole lot of dog. His owner did tell us that he has had problems with other dogs, especially little dogs, so we have not tested him with others nose to nose. This can be done on request but Charlie is so people focused we'd really like to find him a home as an only dog. Note that dogs can walk by his crate all day or he can be with other dogs with a fence between them with no issues at all. Dogs who want to be only dogs are rare. He is an ideal candidate for someone who only wants one dog. Charlie is physically very strong! He pulls on his leash and for some reason has an obsession with the shower in the kennel because if given the chance he runs straight for it. We don't have a pool but I'd love to see this water loving dog doing some hiking where he can splash in the creeks. How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly. More tips and tidbits: Charlie doesn't know basic commands but he is learning he has to sit for his treats. I think he will be a fast learner. He would need a fence. He is very friendly with the adults in our kennel but has not been tested with kids. On our walk he kept his nose to the ground and was full speed ahead! He didn't bark when meeting new people and was perfectly okay with them approaching him to love on him." House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Date into Rescue: 1/26/2017 Reason for being in rescue: 1/26/2017 Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? none noted Weight: 38.8 lbs Height: Estimated 8.5" at the shoulder. Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Fence is recommended until she is leash trained. What kind of home would be best for me? Baby girl needs a home that does not mind working with a under socialized dog. What is my personality like? 3/6/2017-June came to the rescue with her siblings and a few puppies. Her past living conditions has made her weary of new people, and under-socialized. She has no idea what it is like to completely be someone's "loved pet". June needs work, and I mean a lot of work with being socialized. She quickly attaches herself to people she is familiar with. She needs leash work, but I have found a front walking harness helps the most. Although she is still weary of new people, she has came a good bit from when she first got here. She allows certain caregivers to love on her and she showers them with kisses. June has the potential to be a great, completely loyal dog with the right patient person. June has been cat tested and does not mind them. She is also okay with other dogs as long as they are not over-barring and do not scare her. If you open up your heart to her, she will gladly walk in.. 4 paws and all! Notes from caregiver 2/16/2017 " I couldn't for the life of me get her to stay still. I've been delaying posting my description on her but spending time with her every time I'm asked to do it in hopes she's getting better and she is, just extremely slow. She has no desire to have a lead put around her and no desire to walk on it after you spend however long to put it on her. She's just very anxious and scared but who could blame her, seeing as where she had come to us from. She does indeed want you to touch her and her anxieties about it takes over after you do touch her or show her that you would love to give her love. She doesn't like to go in her crate as she's not use to one. She also doesn't know any basic commands and the sound of a car door terrified her so I didn't want to work her up more and actually put her in the car to see what she would do as I wouldn't want anyone to do that to me. She loves to be brushed, we've spent some time getting her use to that to understand it's not scary. She's very sweet and loves to bark but I think it's just out of the love that she has for hank and jolene." ❤ How I act when I first meet new people: Weary, hand shy but wants to be loved. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: est. birth date 3/15/2017 PUPPY POLICY: ~~Thank you for considering adding a puppy to your family. Puppies can be a joyous experience but they can also be a tremendous amount of work. You need to be prepared for that work. Because our goal is to place each of our dogs in forever homes, we are especially cautious where we put puppies. Our ideal puppy adopters are: *experienced dog owners with a solid record of excellent vet care of their previous pets *be scheduled away from home for no more than 4 hours per day *and for those gone 4 hours per day have another canine companion in the home *be stay at home type of people (work at home, home schoolers, retired, etc) If you fit this criteria, please apply for this puppy. If you do not fit this criteria, we strongly encourage you to look at our adoptable adult dogs. The number one misconception that we hear routinely from new dog owners is that they want a puppy because they do not think they can handle correcting past bad behaviors or resolving baggage. Not every adoptable rescue dog carries such baggage. Many adult dogs are well bred, well trained dogs who have lost their families through no fault of their own. The second misconception we hear is that adult dogs can not bond with a new family. This again is not a true statement. Adult dogs are ready and eager to give you their love. In return, you get a family pet that is a known quantity, known size and shape and color and ready to start on the new adventure, their life with you. Lastly, training a puppy correctly is a tremendous commitment of time and energy. This is why we ask the puppy seeker have more time at home than the average working family. Puppies are gregarious and social creatures who crave attention and positive direction. You need the extra time to do it right.~~ Please note - we do not ship dogs. Date into Rescue: 02/21/2011, returned 07/2016 Reason for being in rescue: originally an owner surrender due to not receiving enough attention, but came back to us due to her resource guarding Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? yes - resource guards Weight: est 54 lb Height: est 22 in Adoption Fee: $350.00 Fence needed? Yes What kind of home would be best for me? An adult only home with an experienced owner. No children. Update as of May 2017: Whitley loves people (both men and women). She is intelligent, confident, inquisitive and active. She loves to take walks and "explore" the world. On leashed walks, she is so excited to be outside that she will pull on the leash at first. As a result, I generally let her run around the fenced yard to burn off some energy before putting a leash on her. After doing this, she walks well on the leash. However, she will pull if she sees something of interest. Whitley was relinquished to CPR because she bit the owner and her adult son. The bite to the owner occurred when she tried to take away a piece of chicken from her. (It had bones in it, so the owner persisted, even though Whitley had growled and then showed teeth.) The bite to the son occurred when Whitley ran out an open door. He grabbed her by the hips to stop her, and she whirled around and bit him. (I do not know if this was a reflex reaction or intended bite.) I have found that Whitley will "trade up." For example, she was was exploring a muddy area and didn't want to get out. So I asked if she wanted to take a walk. She loves to walk, so she left the mud. On another occasion, she got a hold of some cinnamon rolls. I approached her, and she growled at me. I respected this warning, and backed off. If I had been able to trade a "higher value items" (such as hamburger), she probably would have let me "trade up" for the rolls. However, I didn't have anything of value, so I let her have the rolls as they weren't anything "harmful." It's possible that Whitley will get over this guarding as she builds a trusting relationship with someone, but I can't tell you for sure if this will happen. Fortunately, I have always been able to either "trade up," or she had an item that wasn't an issue. Because of her resource guarding and bite history, CPR requires that Whitley go to an experienced adult only home. (No children.) Whitley is OK with some dogs. There was another dog in her previous home, and she regularly goes outside with several large dogs. She may be OK with other dogs in a new home, but I would be cautious about bringing her into a home with another dog due to her resource guarding history. (Resource guarding with multiple dogs present is something that's beyond my personal experience level, but many people have more knowledge and experience with this issue than I do.) Whitley is very intelligent. Her previous owners taught her a long list of commands. She enjoys interacting with people, and will do well with someone who uses positive reinforcement training (treats/rewards and praise). When she arrived at CPR, she reacted to mops and brooms by barking. I've worked on this with her, and she seems to have gotten over this - provided she is awake. If she is sleeping in her kennel, and someone wakes her up when cleaning, she will bark. (Maybe she just doesn't like being woken up!) Whitley loves to run and play in the larger fenced field at CPR. When I ask if she wants to take a walk, she will run over to me. She loves adults, and will go up to men and women without hesitation. (I haven't tried her with kids, only because we haven't encountered any yet.) I feel that Whitley is ready to find her forever home. She would do well in an adult only home that is knowledgeable about dogs. Update/ as of August 2016: Whitley is a gorgeous orange (apricot) Standard Poodle with white markings. She is active and curious. She loves people, and would do well with a confident, experienced owner who can spend time with her. She enjoys taking walks, but will pull a little on the the leash. During a recent temperament test, Whitley was OK with dogs (large and small) and cats. However, we feel that she would do best as an only pet. She is an active dog, and reportedly harassed the other dog in her previous home. We feel she may harass a cat, as well. She needs a home where someone can work with her one-on-one. (Only pet, please!) Whitley's food resource guarding seems have improved while in a controlled situation. I was able to give her treats while she was alongside six other dogs, and she was polite and patient the entire time. However, she was in an unfamiliar place, and on her best behavior. She still reacts strongly to mops and brooms. (We will work on this.) When she feels threatened, she will give a clear warning signal by growling. For example, when someone approached from behind her to remove her from a muddy area outside, she growled to let the person know that she did not like them coming up behind her. She is highly food motivated, and will "work" for food! She is leash trained, house trained, and knows many commands (sit, down, etc). She loves men and women. Due to her background and reactivity, we feel she should be in an adult only home. (No children!) Whitley is OK with being groomed, and stands nicely on the grooming table. Our groomer said that Whitley has the best coat she's ever seen! Update as of July 2016: Whitley was adopted from CPR years ago and unfortunately has now returned due to some behavioral issues. Her family reported that Whitley has shown aggression when being asked to do something she didn't want to do and aggression over food. Since she has been with us here she has shown reactivity towards mops and brooms, and she does resource guard her food. Due to her resource guarding issues we feel she would fit best in a home without children. Whitley needs a home with a dog savvy person, someone confident in their dog handling skills, because Ms. Whitley is going to push the envelope and see what she can and cannot get away with. Once she is made aware that that behavior is unacceptable and wasn't going to be tolerated, she behaves like the good dog we know she can be. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
