    Breed: Bichon Frise-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Senior
    Location: Pittsburg, CA
Posted Breed: Bichon Frise / Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed (medium coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 14 yr old, 17 lb Bichon and Poodle Mix SPAYED FEMALE Hospice Program DROPOUT Who remembers the "20 yr old" dog we took from San Jose Animal Care Center? Aunt Jeni was surrendered by her owner for euthanasia because she was (supposedly) 20 years old and had an abdomen "full of tumors". We welcomed her into our hospice program after a plea from the volunteers at San Jose Animal Advocates and Tails of a Shelter Vet Wellllllll.. there has been a happy development. When our veterinary team was checking her over to see what we needed to do to make her comfortable, they were perplexed. Neither of our veterinarians thought she was 20 years old and both thought she was more like 12-15. They also could find no evidence that she was dying... like NONE. They examined her, palpated her abdomen, took x-rays and ran some bloodwork. Nothing pointed to a dying dog. She also does not act like a dying dog... she trots around after her foster moms, eats like a horse and jumps on and off the couch like she is a youngster. She DOES have a big ulcerated mass on her hip that is likely a skin tag that was chewed. She also has a fatty tumor under one of her front legs. Both are likely benign. She has some "old dog warts" but those are nothing to be concerned about. They can be removed with a pretty simple surgery. So, they sent us to an internist at Encina Veterinary Hospital (shoutout to Dr Wang -- we Aaaaaannnnndddddd... she agreed. This is not a dying dog. She did an ultrasound, an echocardiogram, some bloodwork and took her blood pressure. Officially not dying (yay). She told us she was cleared to have surgery to remove her bumps and get her teeth all shiny. There are a few things we have to monitor on her but all in all she is healthy as a horse considering her age which we (and our vet team) have decided is 14 (it's all just a guess). So, now Aunt Jeni needs surgery to have her lumps removed and biopsied. She needs her teeth cleaned. And we need your help! We need to raise $1000 to get Aunt Jeni the care she needs to become ADOPTABLE. Yes, adoptable. She has been kicked out of our hospice program and booted into our adoption program. She will be ADOPTABLE once she heals from her surgery. How you can help... you can donate by purchasing a tshirt or sweatshirt from our Booster campaign for the next few days: https://www.booster.com/umbrellaofhopeanimalrescue You can make a tax-deductible donation at www.paypal.me/UOH Our rescue is run entirely by volunteers and we can only save the hundreds of senior, special needs, medically needy and hospice animals every year because of people like YOU. Posted Breed: Toy Fox Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 3 yr old, 6 lb Toy Fox Terrier and Chihuahua Mix SPAYED FEMALE for ADOPTION Meet Miss Sencha Tea Sencha is a 3 yr old, 6 lb Toy Fox Terrier and Chihuahua Mix SPAYED FEMALE. She is also microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites Sencha has lived with kids and other dogs and does not seem to be that interested in cats. She will walk on a leash and is GREAT in the crate. She is doing really well with her potty habits and it only took 4 days for her to learn the routine in her foster home. We expect a learning curve but she is eager to please and will get it down quickly. She is versatile in that she will use a potty pad or go outside when taken. In her past life, she was apparently made to stay in her crate almost all of the time. It IS her safe place, but she needs to be encouraged to spend time outside of it. Apparently, her foster mom has done a GREAT job of teaching her about LAPS. Sencha is shy around new people and her new owners need to understand that she is slow to warm. Once she loves you, she LOVES you but each new person is scary. She loves *her* kids, but needs proper introductions to new kids so busy homes without a place for her to retreat may not be the best set up. We will pay for dog training classes for a new adopter because learning and performing commands and being rewarded for doing so helps build a dog's confidence. Lots of walks helps this too as does a routine when meeting new people (the best treats ever that she only gets when meeting new people is helpful). Thanks to a generous sponsor -- Sencha's adoption fee has been sponsored to an approved home. To find out more about adoption, please email us at beourpet@gmail.com and tell us about yourself and your home. To donate towards Sencha's medical expenses and training classes while in our care (around $500) please make a tac-deductible donation at www.paypal.me/UOH. Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel / Mixed (medium coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 10 yr old, 17 lb Cocker Spaniel Mix SPAYED FEMALE for ADOPTION Meet Miss Grandma Mae Kibble Grandma Mae is named after Grandma Mae's Country Naturals Dog Food. Grandma Mae is a 10 yr old, 18 lb Cocker Spaniel Mix SPAYED FEMALE. She was brought into our veterinary clinic as a stray found on a busy street near the clinic. Her microchip was registered to people with Colorado numbers and they did not answer or return calls from the vet team. We asked Fido Alert - East Contra Costa County to help us find anyone who knew what had happened to her but no one came forward. She was stinky, covered in fleas, missing over 1/2 of her hair, had the LONGEST toenails we had ever seen (pics in comments) and was scratching herself so much she was bleeding. She has dry-eye so bad that her eyeballs had scabs. She was starving and gulped down 4 bowls of food in less than 24 hours. Due to local stray laws, she was required to go to the shelter for a stray hold and CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES started her medical treatment while they tried to track down an owner. It took over 10 days for the owner to respond and they said they had given her away previously and just wanted her euthanized so we were more than happy to go get her and bring her into our program. She is being fostered by a wonderful RVT who had previously fostered (and adopted) another one of our skin issue dogs -- Mighty Moe. She is on over a dozen different medications to try to ease her itching, soothe her skin and start the healing process. We hope she will be feeling better really soon so that we can get some lumps removed and her teeth cleaned. She apparently loves "soft beds and cuddles" and has a huge appetite but takes food very gently. She already knows her name, follows her foster mom around and whines and jumps up to be petted. She is a beautiful soul and she deserves so much better than what she was given and we want to make sure she knows she is a princess. We are an ALL VOLUNTEER team and we need donations to be able to continue to provide this level of care to senior, special needs, medically needy, hospice, shy and plain animals who are at risk of euthanasia in shelters. Help us save more dogs like Grandma Mae. To make a tax-deductible donation please do so at www.paypal.me/UOH To purchase a tshirt or sweatshirt to spread the word about our organization AND to help support our medical fund, please go here (last day): https://www.booster.com/umbrellaofhopeanimalrescue Grandma Mae will not be available for adoption for 6-8 weeks. Rawbble is named after BIXBI food RAWBBLE. Rawbble is a 4 yr old, 15 lb Beagle and Pug (Puggle) NEUTERED MALE. He is also microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites. Rawbble was taken to CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES after he was attacked by a larger dog while he was a stray. The attack was so bad, it severed his front left leg to the point that it needed to be amputated! He also had some minor skin wounds that have already healed up. He is now a tripod and does just fine. Rawbble is a happy, sweet guy who walks well on a leash and loves to ride in the car. He seems to be crate trained and is doing great with his house manners so we think he was housebroken at one point (always expect a learning curve in a new environment). Rawbble says he LOVES dog beds and the bigger and fluffier the better! Rawbble is a little shy at first, but once he gets to know you he loooovvvveeeeeessss you. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 1 yr old, 5 lb Chihuahua SPAYED FEMALE for ADOPTION Meet Miss Emma Lou's Kibble! She is named after Emma Lou's Homemade Kitchen because she looks like the dog in their logo. This name (apostrophe and all) leads to some interesting nicknames. In a few short days she is responding to Emmalous, Memmaloos, Memma, Meemo and Squeak (we are not sure how squeak came about... the student interns are tired and they make some crazy stuff up when the coffee runs low. We asked how they got 'squeak' from Emma Lou's and they just laughed). Emma Lou's is a 1 yr old, 5 lb Chihuahua who joins us from Solano County Sheriff's Office Animal Care Division. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and free of parasites. Emma Lou's is sweet and a little shy but when you start talking to her all you see is *thump thump thump* as her little tail starts a-going and she gets so excited to have attention from someone who loves her. And we all love her. She is submissive and gentle. She loves other dogs and is smaller than most cats and not interested in harming them. We think she would probably be fine with gentle children, but we would like them to meet each other prior to adoption. She does okay on the leash, but needs some practice with her confidence. A doggy obedience class would be perfect for her as leaning and being rewarded for performing commands is a great way to build a dog's confidence. We will preference homes who have a plan for training. She is doing well as far as her potty skills go, but all new dogs will need reinforcement in a new environment. She is very eager to please and get praise so we expect she would catch on soon. She is excellent in the crate and rides well in the car. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 5 yr old, 8 lb Chihuahua NEUTERED MALE for ADOPTION Meet Mr Merrick Kibble! Merrick is named after Merrick Pet Care as part of our dog food theme month. Merrick joins us from Solano County Sheriff's Office Animal Care Division. He is a 5 yr old, 8 lb Chihuahua with an underbite that makes him INCREDIBLY adorable. He is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites. Merrick is very sweet, but a little unsure in this new environment. He was adopted as a puppy and then returned to the shelter last month when his owners decided he no longer fit in with their life plans. This decision had NOTHING to do with this dog. Many people feel like there must be something wrong with dogs who need rescued when in all actuality it was the people who owned them who had something wrong and the dog pays the price for that. Merrick is housetrained, crate trained and is one of the best leash walkers we have ever had (he stays right by you and stops when you stop and sits). He is quiet and gentle and ever so sensitive. He gets along well with other dogs and does not seem interested in cats. He would probably be fine with gentle children but we would want them to meet each other prior to adoption. Merrick does have thinning of some of his hair and after running all tests (skin scraping, bloodwork) to rule out any underlying disease, our vet has described this as "color dilution alopecia" which pretty much means his hair is thin due to the genes responsible for his unusual coloring. It does not bother him and requires no treatment. It just is what it is. Merrick DOES qualify for our Seniors for Seniors program where animals aged 5+ can be adopted to people aged 55+ for a $5 adoption fee. Application required and all normal adoption criteria apply To inquire about adopting Merrick, please send a detailed email to beourpet@gmail.com. We welcome adopters from anywhere to travel to us in the SF Bay Area of CA to adopt but we don't drop ship our dogs to places unknown - we want to meet their families. Posted Breed: Red Heeler / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (medium coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 12 yr old, 55 lb* (on a major diet) Cattle Dog SPAYED FEMALE for ADOPTION Meet Diadora... our sweetheart These photos may be hard to look at, but imagine how hard it was for this sweet dog to live like this... THIS is why we are here. THIS is why we rescue. For the dogs like Diadora who have no other options. They have Umbrella of Hope. Diadora was left at San Jose Animal Care Center and was treated by Tails of a Shelter Vet and they went above and beyond what would normally be done in a shelter setting. The San Jose Animal Advocates asked us if we could take her into our program. Of course we could! Diadora is a 12 yr old Australian Cattle Dog. She is horrifically overweight. She weighs 55 lbs and should weigh closer to 35 lbs. Her weight has caused horrific arthritis and she is on a diet to help her get down to a comfortable weight and take pressure off of her joints. Of more immediate concern was the glaucoma in both of her eyes. Having glaucoma of this stage caused pain that had to be unbearable. It is like having a massive migraine 24-7 that no medicine can touch. When glaucoma is allowed to get to this stage by neglectful owners, there is no going back. The eyes have to be removed. We had this done at our vet clinic. Diadora was already blind. So, removing her eyes did not make a difference to her except it alleviated her pain. Dogs who are blind do just fine... and Diadora is no exception. She has been blind for a long time. Now she is not in pain anymore. She went from being a very sweet, but very sedate girl to a very happy dog who wags her tail constantly. She must feel SO MUCH BETTER! Diadora will be looking for a home who is prepared to deal with her blindness (it really is no big deal). She also needs a home committed to her diet and (once she heals from surgery) an exercise program consisting of short walks and possibly shallow swims. She is a lovely lady. Very gentle and unassuming. Polite and crate trained. She is housebroken and walks well on a leash. She is fine with other dogs and cats. She would be great with gentle children who are old enough to understand her limitations. If you are interested in adopting Diadora, please email us at beourpet@gmail.com To donate towards the care of Diadora and the animals like her that we are committed to rescue, please do so online at www.paypal.me/UOH. #startastoryadopt #shelterpetlove #blinddog #acd #australiancattledog GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Yes, we think so Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No Good with cats?: Yes, we think so Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 5 Umbrella of Hope is a non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals off death row from local shelters. Donate towards Earl Grey's care at www.paypal.me/UOH Earl Grey joins us from San Jose Animal Care Center via San Jose Animal Advocates He is a 3 yr old, 5 lb Dachshund and Chihuahua Mix. He's a "squishy" dog without being at all fat. You just want to SQUISH him with love. And he was a shelter favorite and we have been told that he needs the most wonderful home on the planet (This is your cue to tag the most wonderful home on the planet). Thanks to the AMAZING Tails of a Shelter Vet he got allllllll fixed up and is good as new. He has a pretty cool story. He came into the shelter limping and x-rays revealed a badly healed broken pelvis (at some point he was likely hit by a car. We refer to this as boy-with-balls-not-thinking-with-brain disease and it is incredibly common). We regularly have dogs with this injury who need ONE side of their hips taken care of with a procedure called a Femoral Head Ostectomy or FHO. This is where the vet removes the ball of the femur (leg bone) that usually resides in the hip socket (can you picture it?) and then the muscles around the hip strengthen up and create a new socket and the dog is good as new. It is a pretty gnarly and intense orthopedic procedure and they did an outstanding job! Earl Grey needed this on BOTH sides <pause for effect> This is the first time we have ever had a dog that needed bilateral (both sides) FHO's at Umbrella of Hope. And he is doing GREAT! No more limping. The wonderful veterinary staff at the shelter probably made this dog more comfortable than he has been in a long time. They also neutered him which makes him the first dog in the history of Umbrella of Hope to have FOUR BALLS removed <let that sink in> hee hee... get it? Four balls? He is getting his teeth polished up today and will be ready for adoption next week. He is also microchipped and vaccinated and free of parasites. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" Pinto is a 8 Year old, 6lb, Chihuahua, SPAYED Female For ADOPTION! Meet Miss Pinto Vroom! As of 10/24/15 Pinto is considered to be a hospice dog due to a pituitary tumor. She will be completing a bucket list and can be followed on Facebook with the hashtag #pintosbucketlist Pinto has been with us since July 2015 when she came to us with a healing abscess on her head that our wonderful friends at CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES took care of for us by placing a drain. It was very slow to heal and as we were monitoring some unusual findings on her bloodwork over the next few months, we incidentally found out that she had developed Cushing's Disease (which is treatable/manageable). She was put on a diet to help her lose some weight because she was having some issues with her back legs. She also has had a snotty nose that would get better and then get worse after many rounds of antibiotics and a culture. Her right eye has also been bulged out and that did not get better after her abscess resolved. Putting all of these pieces together, our vet x-rayed her head and is pretty confident that she has a brain tumor on her pituitary gland that is growing pretty fast. We have entered her into our hospice program. She is now no longer on a diet and can eat whatever she likes. We will be monitoring her quality of life and making sure that every day counts and when she is no longer having good days, we will let her go. Right now she is happy, active and HUNGRY. She has now decided to end her life in the best way possible... By starting and COMPLETING a Bucket List. If you are local (SF Bay Area of CA) and want to take her on a date, please email us at beourpet@gmail.com. If you are not local, please consider taking a hospice dog from your local shelter or rescue and giving them an amazing sunset. Donations towards Pinto's care or her legacy program, can be mailed to Umbrella of Hope, c/o Well Pet Vet Clinic, 4040 Railroad Ave, Pittsburg, CA 94565 OR our paypal address is beourpet@gmail.com. We also have an Amazon Wish List. Our tax ID number is 45-4103375 and all donations are tax-deductible. (Pinto is from Contra Costa Animal Services) Pinto is a 8 Year old, 6lb, Chihuahua, SPAYED Female For ADOPTION! She is also microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites! Pinto was dropped off in the night drop off box at Contra Costa Animal services, when the shelter workers found her she was scared and hurt. She had an ENORMOUS abscess on the right side of her forehead. They drained it (you could even see her skull underneath it, poor baby!) and set about fixing her, all through out this she behaved like a model citizen regardless of how hurt she was! Thanks to the amazing work by Contra Costa Animal services she is healing well. She currently has stents holding her sore bits open, she looks like she's going to make a fantastic recovery very soon and is going to be back to her vivacious self soon. (UPDATE; We are happy to annouce she's made an amazing recovery and is slowly growing back some fuzz around her old injury) She's got an amazing personality, she has the cutest bossy little bark if she wants attention but quickly stops if you give her the eye! She seems very independent but also a lover of cuddles! She loves lounging in the garden on the grass and if you're lucky she'll show you Her famous grass wiggle! She even gives kisses if you tell her she's pretty. She also knows how to sit and is great with other dogs! If you think Pinto is better off in your arms, email us at beourpet@gmail.com or fill in an application online! Welcome to UOH Pinto!
