Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 8 yr old, 5 lb Chihuahua NEUTERED MALE for ADOPTION Meet Mr Denim Crayola Denim is a 7 yr old, 5 lb Chihuahua NEUTERED MALE. He is also microchipped, vaccinated, free of parasites and has had senior labwork and extensive dental procedures done. Denim is a sweetheart. He is crate trained and will not go potty in his crate. He has already learned not to potty in our house although it took some reinforcement at the beginning. He gets along fine with all of my dogs although he would prefer to be snuggled up in our laps rather than playing He is curious about our cat it's like he's never seen one before and the hair on his back stands up. Super Duper sweet little guy... is fine with gentle children especially if they have warm laps. Denim qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors promotion where dogs aged 5+ can be adopted to people 55+ for a $5 adoption fee. Adoptions to US Military Veterans are ALWAYS free. Bluetonium is a 2 yr old 7 lb Dachshund, Chihuahua and Pug (?) mix who came to us from Contra Costa Animal Services Bluetonium is very playful. He acts like a puppy. After the first day as a learning curve, as far as we can tell he is housebroken. He seems to be crate trained and does very well on the leash. He is a really good boy. Loves to cuddle. He is very respectful of the cats. We haven't had him around children yet but doubt there would be a concern. He is a very sweet boy. He is good with other dogs but REALLY wants to play with them and is really in-your-face with them so they get irritated with him. He would be best matched with another really playful dog or a dog who will correct his obnoxious-ness when needed. Adoptions to US Military Veterans are ALWAYS free. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 7 yr old, 7 lb Chihuahua NEUTERED MALE for ADOPTION Meet Mr PitBoss Pit Boss is a 7 yr old, 7 lb Chihuahua NEUTERED MALE. He is also vaccinated, microchipped, free of parasites and has had senior labwork and a dental cleaning. PitBoss joins us from Antioch Animal Services where he was owner-surrendered because the "other dogs were picking on him" Alllllll PitBoss wants is another friendly dog to play with him but he does not have the awareness to know when to back off. He wants to interact with his friends ALL OF THE TIME and it probably gets on their nerves. We can guess this is what the owner thought was him getting picked on. The other dogs would tell him "ENOUGH" and he would not listen and so they had to escalate it. He really just wants a friend. PitBoss has deformed ears by being made to live outside and having what is called "fly strike". It is a cosmetic issue only and will not cause him any issues. PitBoss also has hypothyroidism that had gone untreated for a long time which caused some skin issues. Now that he has been properly treated, his skin issues have gone away. The pill is super cheap ($5/month) and we are hoping to get donations from our supporters in order to send him home with a year's supply (the most we can send per the law). If you would like to donate towards PitBoss's thyroid meds, please do so at www.paypal.me/UOH As with all animals aged 5+, PitBoss can be adopted to someone aged 55+ for a $5 adoption fee. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Manchester Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" Miniature Rottweiler born ~4/17/2017 for ADOPTION Popplio has been cleared for ADOPTION -- SF Bay Area of CA You can follow her on Instagram @popplio_pokepup Popplio is a 7 lb Chihuahua and Terrier Mix who came to us in May as a wee little puppy from San Jose Animal Care Center via San Jose Animal Advocates and Tails of a Shelter Vet She is now 5 months old and has been spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated and had her inguinal hernia repaired. She has also been going to physical therapy sessions and having ultrasound treatments at A Well Adjusted Pet to loosen her joints, muscles and ligaments and is now able to use her legs for support. She runs well and is full of energy, but isn't able to extend her legs Popplio was born with a birth defect that caused her back legs to not function correctly. When she came into our program, Popplio's rear legs were splayed to the sides. She now uses them but they are "crunched up" like her foster brother says. Her bone anatomy is normal on x-ray and her veterinary team thinks that her tendons and ligaments did not form correctly and do not stretch the way they should that would make her legs look and work normally. It just is how she is. She does not know or care, so we do not spend time feeling sorry for her because she does not feel sorry for herself. While it is a possibility that she may need a wheelchair later in life, for now she gets around just fine. Popplio is a fun, spunky, affectionate puppy. She loves to play with other dogs and with people, but also appreciates a good cuddle when she's ready to rest. She has been raised with cats, dogs of all sizes and children and we think she would do fine in a family with other pets and dog savvy children (just because she is a puppy). Popplio loves to explore and play outside, she can run as fast as some of her foster companions, but too much time on rough surfaces can result in sores on her rear feet. We're looking into boots to protect her feet so she's able to go for more walks without injury.Because we don't know why her legs are the way they are, we cannot predict how they might change as she continues to grow and develop. We'll show adopters the stretches she's been doing so they can continue to keep those legs stretched out and moving as well as possible. Popplio loves feet, she spends a lot of time sitting between the feet of her foster family. She loves toys of all kinds and races around carrying them. She'll play chase and tug and has plenty of kisses to share. She enjoys digging and burrowing in the sand at the beach, we're working on her leash walking. She'd be happy to go on hikes, but would prefer to ride in your backpack or a sling carrier. She currently uses pee pads but is also learning to go outside to do her business We are looking for an adopter who is willing to help maintain/grow her social media presence in order to promote the adoptions of pets with special needs. Training and support provided for the technology-challenged She is located in the SF Bay Area of CA and we are always willing to adopt to people who are willing to travel to us. Thanks to a lovely sponsorship by the Hudson family, we may be able to help with transporting her elsewhere HOWEVER, we are not Amazon and do not provide door-to-door shipping services to someone not willing to lift a finger (you need to be willing to help coordinate the process). We also do not use unregulated, multi-leg transports. We would be THRILLED to do whatever needed to pair her with a child with a similar condition. To inquire about adopting her, please send an email to beourpet@gmail.com To make a tax-deductible donation towards her care, please do so online at www.paypal.me/UOH #startastoryadopt #shelterpetlove #poppliopokepup GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Yes, uses pee pads AND goes outside Crate Trained?: Yes with pee pads in an enclosed space Leash Trained?: I am working on this. Posted Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog (long coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 7 yr old, 120 lb Bernese Mountain Dog -- HOSPICE ***Schivo is in his forever foster-hospice ("fospice") home and he will not be moved out of it for any reason. He is listed in an effort to bring awareness to the need for hospice foster homes as well as to solicit donations from Berner lovers for his care. Donations can be made online at www.paypal.me/UOH and are tax-deductible Tax ID # 45-4103375 UPDATE 8/15/2017 -- Schivo has passed away - details below*** Welcome our newest hospice dog, Schivo*. Schivo comes to us from San Jose Animal Care Center via San Jose Animal Advocates and Tails of a Shelter Vet Schivo is a 7 yr old, 120 lb Bernese Mountain Dog. Schivo was purchased as a puppy from a breeder and lived his 7 years being the loyal friend to his family until they did the ultimate betrayal and dumped him at the shelter to be euthanized. He gave them seven years of love and they threw him away. Threw him away like trash. Why? Well, they dumped Schivo at the shelter because he "had cancer" and "wasn't eating"... well, we know the not eating part was a lie because he hasn't stopped eating since he got to his forever foster home. As far as the cancer, well... we have not been able to track down any vet records that prove this as they were not surrendered with him. We have a hard time believing that "metastatic splenic histocytic sarcoma" just rolled off the tip of the tongue of the people dumping him but we also have a hard time believing that anyone who would spend the kind of money to have cancer that specifically diagnosed would do their loyal, loving, HAPPY dog the disgrace of dumping him at a shelter to be euthanized. Had his quality of life deteriorated to the point where he needed to be euthanized, the diagnosing veterinarian should have had zero issues with helping Schivo cross the bridge. But here we are. And there is not a nice way of cushioning what they did or why they did it. We were arranging the pickup of a 16 yr old chihuahua (to be introduced tomorrow) and we were asked if we possibly had room for him. Well, it just so happens that a good friend of Umbrella of Hope has a Berner of her own (see Elena the Berner in picture number 4 next to Schivo). And she just so happened to be able to go pick up Schivo and the chihuahua at the shelter. And so here we are. So, Schivo is safe with Elena, her mom and the rest of the pack and he will be well taken care of whether that be for one week or one year. He is fostered-hospiced-adopted into Casa Elena. But, it turns out that 120 lb dogs eat a LOT of food. And need a lot of supplies, toys, treats, beds and grooming. And take large amounts of pain meds for their bad hips. We also may have to pursue some diagnostics if we cannot track down any medical records that show that Schivo does indeed have cancer. And if he does have cancer, we will need to be able to provide him with excellent comfort care and end of life services when that time arises (with dignity AT his foster home TYVM). So, any donations that you want to point our way can be sent to us several ways and will be put to GOOD use. You can point tangible supply donations from our Amazon Wish List http://a.co/g0gahAc or you can make a monetary donation (put in memo "For Schivo") at www.paypal.me/UOH or you can mail a check to our attention to 4040 Railroad Blvd, Pittsburg, CA 94565. All donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law and our Tax ID is 45-4103375. *At Umbrella of Hope, we strongly believe in the motto of "New Life; New Name"... Schivo responds nicely to the name we gave him and has put his old life and old name behind him. We will not give his old owners the dignity of posting it as he has seemed to have forgotten both it and them. #startastoryadopt #shelterpetlove #bernesemountaindog #berner UPDATE: Farewell, Schivo... 'As I stand on the mountaintop, the great bird approaches. He is small in my sight, but grows larger on approach until I am blessed with the full sight of his graceful wings, proud countenance and good company. All too quickly, he grows small again on the horizon and disappears from view. And I call out, "Look, there. He's gone." Gone from my sight, that is all. His diminished size is in me, not in him. Because there are other mountaintops beyond me. And at the precise moment when I note the great bird's departure from my view, I know there are new eyes taking up the sight of him. And fresh voices calling out, "Here he comes!" '* Thank you, sweet Schivo, for giving us the beauty of your presence and allowing us to give you back the dignity that was taken from you. You gave us more than we could ever give you in return. Say hello to our many friends who have gone before you and wait for us. We will miss you, forever. Although our veterinarians were never able to find any signs of cancer in Schivo, he did have horrific hips and was having extreme difficulty in walking. We had reached the point where multiple veterinarians were struggling to manage his pain levels and as of Monday he had lost the ability to stand. We were unable to watch him suffer any longer. Please send your thoughts towards his foster/hospice mom, Sarah. She slept on the floor with him the last two weeks and according to her he made an amazing "little spoon". She is hurting this morning because she loved him like her own and they bonded greatly in the short time they were together. Your donations made it possible for him to have an orthopedic bed, gripper socks and mats, vet care, super strength pain medication in incredibly large doses, the best food ever and he was able to exit this world in his home beside his mom as we had a veterinarian come to them to help him pass. (This was after a day of several gourmet hamburgers and after eating a plate of steak, potato chips and chocolate as his last meal**). Memorial donations can be made at www.paypal.me/UOH and will be used towards the care of future hospice animals. *The exact author of the poem is unknown. It is most certainly based on A Parable of Immortality by Henry Van Dyke and a similar poem was read by the character of Dr Garrett Macy on the TV show Crossing Jordan. We are unsure where this exact version came from but do not take any credit for it's wording. **Dogs should not eat steak, potato chips or chocolate unless it is their last meal on Earth, and then all bets are off. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 2 yr old, 9 lb Dachshund and Chihuahua Mix HOSPICE DOG Sometimes life just isn't fair... Costata is short for the Latin name of the seashell called the Cyrtopleura costata -- the Angel Wing shell. She got that name because this 2 year old, 9 lb Dachshund and Chihuahua Mix is the newest addition to our Umbrella of Hope Hospice Program Costata was found as a stray and brought to San Jose Animal Care Center and it was found that she had an ulcerated mass on her abdomen. Tails of a Shelter Vet treated her, removed the mass and sent it off for biopsy. And it was bad. The mass came back as a Grade III carcinosarcoma. A plea was put out via San Jose Animal Advocates for a rescue to take her for hospice care. This rare tumor usually affects older dogs so our girl drew an unlucky card. This cancer is aggressive and metastasizes quickly and our veterinarian thinks she has a prognosis of 3-4 months. Chemotherapy, while an option in theory, is prohibitively expensive and (more importantly) would only offer another 2-3 months and much of that would be spent in medical appointments and not living life and being a dog. So it is not an option that we are going to pursue for her. We have the technology of extending life... sometimes at any cost, but the hard part is having the wisdom to know when enough is enough. Death is not always the enemy -- inhumanity is -- and we will provide her with love and comfort care until she tells us it is her time to go and we will humanely release her. NOTE: We have an extensive veterinary team in place and trust them implicitly so we are NOT looking for medical advice. While we appreciate that things like turmeric, coconut oil, CBD oil and herbal remedies have worked for other people/pets we are going to stick with the advice of her medical team and what they recommend for her comfort. So, Costata, our Angel Wings girl will be 'fospiced' (foster-hospice) and given a really good life for the time she has left and she will be in a home, with a family and treated as their own. She is happy, sweet and is not in any pain. She will be closely monitored by our veterinary team who will advise us of the best decisions for her. Once we get to know her personality better, she may have some bucket list adventures that she will post about on Pinto's Bucket List . She is being fospiced in the SF Bay Area of California (East Bay). If she has the kind of temperament that would be conducive to going out on "dates" with people who want to take her to the beach or to a park or to a dog-friendly restaurant we will post about finding people to do that with her. To donate towards her medical and comfort care, please do so at www.paypal.me/UOH. Once we get to know her better, she may come up with her own Amazon Wish List of things that make her happy. Posted Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Poodle (Toy) (medium coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 14 yr old, 12 lb Toy Poodle SPAYED FEMALE for ADOPTION Meet Miss Bubble Seashell Bubble is a 14 yr old, 12 lb Toy Poodle SPAYED FEMALE. She is also microchipped, vaccinated, free of parasites and has had a dental cleaning and senior labwork. Bubble comes to us from our friends at Encina Veterinary Hospital where she was taken as a surrender by a staff member when her owner brought her in for euthanasia for "being old" Bubble is a DOLL and she loves people of all ages and she loves to eat. She walks well on a leash and is crate trained. She LOVES riding in the car. Bubble does need a little reinforcement in the housetraining area but is doing really well at her foster home and just needs consistency. Bubble needs to eat a low-fat food because she has higher-than-normal triglycerides. Unlike in humans, high triglycerides in dogs does not generally lead to heart disease and is almost always controlled by diet when the levels are like Bubble's. (If they were ten times higher than they are, she would take medication for it). There are both prescription and non-prescription diets that can be used. She is currently eating FirstMate Pet Foods Senior variety which is low fat. She can have regular treats and is otherwise unrestricted. She has no other obvious health concerns. Bubble is fostered in the SF Bay Area of CA and we welcome out of area adopters who travel to us to adopt. We require you to be a part of the process and be willing to work with us to do the adoption. If your expectation is that we deliver her to your doorstep seven states away then we will point you towards a stuffed dog on Amazon instead. We do not utilize volunteer multi-leg transports as they are unregulated and we care too much about our dogs to put them in danger. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" Pinto is a 8 Year old, 6lb, Chihuahua, SPAYED Female For ADOPTION! Meet Miss Pinto Vroom! As of 10/24/15 Pinto is considered to be a hospice dog due to a pituitary tumor. She will be completing a bucket list and can be followed on Facebook with the hashtag #pintosbucketlist Pinto has been with us since July 2015 when she came to us with a healing abscess on her head that our wonderful friends at CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES took care of for us by placing a drain. It was very slow to heal and as we were monitoring some unusual findings on her bloodwork over the next few months, we incidentally found out that she had developed Cushing's Disease (which is treatable/manageable). She was put on a diet to help her lose some weight because she was having some issues with her back legs. She also has had a snotty nose that would get better and then get worse after many rounds of antibiotics and a culture. Her right eye has also been bulged out and that did not get better after her abscess resolved. Putting all of these pieces together, our vet x-rayed her head and is pretty confident that she has a brain tumor on her pituitary gland that is growing pretty fast. We have entered her into our hospice program. She is now no longer on a diet and can eat whatever she likes. We will be monitoring her quality of life and making sure that every day counts and when she is no longer having good days, we will let her go. Right now she is happy, active and HUNGRY. She has now decided to end her life in the best way possible... By starting and COMPLETING a Bucket List. If you are local (SF Bay Area of CA) and want to take her on a date, please email us at beourpet@gmail.com. If you are not local, please consider taking a hospice dog from your local shelter or rescue and giving them an amazing sunset. Donations towards Pinto's care or her legacy program, can be mailed to Umbrella of Hope, c/o Well Pet Vet Clinic, 4040 Railroad Ave, Pittsburg, CA 94565 OR our paypal address is beourpet@gmail.com. We also have an Amazon Wish List. Our tax ID number is 45-4103375 and all donations are tax-deductible. (Pinto is from Contra Costa Animal Services) Pinto is a 8 Year old, 6lb, Chihuahua, SPAYED Female For ADOPTION! She is also microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites! Pinto was dropped off in the night drop off box at Contra Costa Animal services, when the shelter workers found her she was scared and hurt. She had an ENORMOUS abscess on the right side of her forehead. They drained it (you could even see her skull underneath it, poor baby!) and set about fixing her, all through out this she behaved like a model citizen regardless of how hurt she was! Thanks to the amazing work by Contra Costa Animal services she is healing well. She currently has stents holding her sore bits open, she looks like she's going to make a fantastic recovery very soon and is going to be back to her vivacious self soon. (UPDATE; We are happy to annouce she's made an amazing recovery and is slowly growing back some fuzz around her old injury) She's got an amazing personality, she has the cutest bossy little bark if she wants attention but quickly stops if you give her the eye! She seems very independent but also a lover of cuddles! She loves lounging in the garden on the grass and if you're lucky she'll show you Her famous grass wiggle! She even gives kisses if you tell her she's pretty. She also knows how to sit and is great with other dogs! If you think Pinto is better off in your arms, email us at beourpet@gmail.com or fill in an application online! Welcome to UOH Pinto! Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 7 yr old, 10 lb Miniature Pinscher SPAYED FEMALE for ADOPTION/HOSPICE Meet Miss Eulima Seashell :) She is an adoptable hospice dog. There is no fee to adopt her and we will take care of her comfort and end of life care for any local adopter. Eulima joined us several weeks ago but we had to wait on some biopsies before we knew her status. Eulima is a Miniature Pinscher who is around 7 years old and 10 lbs. She is happy and loving and sweet and good. She gets along with everyone -- cat and dog -- and is rated for all ages of people. Eulima comes to us from Antioch Animal Services where she was a stray that went unclaimed. She had a MULTITUDE of breast tumors that were removed when our vet spayed her. One was a skin tag. Many were just cysts. But one was a malignant adenocarcinoma. What does this mean? Well... she isn't dying but her life is likely to be limited because of the cancer. This was 100% preventable had she been spayed before her first heat. She is looking for a special home who will welcome her and cherish her and make her life REALLY good for whatever time she has left. Her lungs are clear and her lymph nodes are too so she likely has at least a year, maybe more. Umbrella of Hope will cover her comfort medications needed to keep her happy when that time comes and we will cover her end of life expenses at our veterinarian. She just needs someone to love her and give her a home. You would not know that she was sick. She is a happy-happy-bouncy-bouncy that is full of zest and loves her life and her foster home. Eulima's medication and monitoring will cost Umbrella of Hope around $20/month. Her surgery, dental, labwork and biopsy have already run us around $800. If you cannot adopt her, a donation to help us with her and with other dogs like her allows our all-volunteer team to continue doing this work in the community. Tax-deductible donations can be made online at www.paypal.me/UOH(please specify that it is for Eulima).
