  • Chihuahua Dog For Adoption in Pittsburg, CA

    *Tiny Tim Ho...

    Breed: Chihuahua
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: Pittsburg, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 4 yr old, 3 lb Chihuahua NEUTERED MALE for ADOPTION Meet Mr Tiny Tim Holiday Tiny Tim is a 4 yr old, 3 lb Chihuahua who joins us from Solano County Sheriff's Office Animal Care Division. Apparently, his owners came to get him and then changed their minds and left him behind but inquired about adopting another dog while they were there (this happens more often than you think... yes, we saw the video last week of Zuzu). He is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, free of parasites and has had a dental cleaning. He's a little spicy so we do not recommend him for homes with children under the age of 10. Contrary to popular belief, teeny tiny dogs are not appropriate for young, grabby, fast-moving, awkward toddlers. We know your children/grandchildren are perfect special snowflakes but it still isn't going to work for this dog. In his case, it is due BOTH to prevention of injury on his part and prevention of injury on the child's part. As little as he is, he DOES have teeth and he has been understandably a little snappy when strange hands reach for him too quickly. If a giant who was TEN TIMES bigger than you went to grab for you too, you might feel a little threatened. Once he knows you, he is a total snuggle bunny and gives lots of kisses. He needs a chihuahua-savvy home. He is more of the "carry me" than the "go on a walk type" but he will walk on a leash. He is crate trained and does go potty outside but as far as if we think he is the type of dog that you can set free in your house for 8 hours when you go to work the first week you have him and not come home to a potty accident, we would say no. Setting realistic expectations for new pets is required whether you adopt a puppy or an adult. Could you train him to do that? Possibly, but it would require work on YOUR part and with his size and breed is likely going to be challenging. He is spicy. He growls a lot. He probably was unintentionally rewarded for this behavior in the past and thinks it is cute. It's amazing that behaviors that would never be tolerated in larger dogs are reinforced in smaller ones. We've pushed him pretty hard and he has not bitten us but he does have teeth and any dog with teeth *could* bite. We are looking for a home who has dealt with other dogs with Napoleon (little man) Syndrome. He is fine with other small dogs and would be fine with mellow, larger dogs who have lived with small dogs (again, for his safety... large happy paws stomping down around him may not be the safest option for him). As long as your cat isn't going to mistake him for a mouse and hunt him down, cat homes would be fine too. He is a little amorous with the other dogs right now, but we are hoping that once the hormones die down, he won't be as interested. Tiny Tim is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of CA and we expect that we will find him a home quickly within driving distance. We DO adopt out-of-area but we require YOU to come to US. We are within 1 hour of FOUR major airports. It is not appropriate to ship a tiny dog cargo in the dead of winter and although we are aware (and often reminded) of alllllll the volunteer transports that exist, there are very few that we would actually trust to safely get a dog somewhere (they are unregulated and there ARE horror stories). For information on adopting Tiny Tim, please send a DETAILED email to beourpet@gmail.com and address the description above so we know you read it and aren't just emailing because you want to be like Paris Hilton and have a 3 lb dog. If you would like to sponsor part of Tiny Tim's medical and care while he is with us ($250 total; any donation is greatly appreciated) please donate at www.paypal.me/UOH or email us for an address to send a check. Posted Breed: Poodle (Toy) (medium coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 12 yr old, 10 lb Toy Poodle NEUTERED MALE for ADOPTION There once was a lady who worked at a vet clinic -- our vet clinic. Sometimes she seemed a bit gruff, but that was just her New York upbringing shining through. She had a heart of gold and LOVED dogs. She was a huge fan and supporter of our mission and had quite a little pack of "ankle biters" (except the biting part) -- several of whom were adopted from Umbrella of Hope. Thora eventually retired and got to spend her days with all of her beloved dogs. Eventually, some of them passed on... and last week Thora joined them suddenly and unexpectedly. We are stunned and saddened and we will miss her greatly. Finn was one of her greatly loved dogs and he is in need of a new mom (or dad). Finnigan -- 12 yr old, 10 lb Toy Poodle NEUTERED MALE. He is great with other dogs, kids and cats. He is gentle and unassuming but he still plays like he is younger. He loves to go for walks, snuggle and will do ANYTHING to get petted. He is excellent at the groomer. He is blind due to cataracts but he navigates around quite well after the first day in a new place. Finn takes a thyroid pill twice daily (est cost $40/year) and needs to eat a low protein food to keep his kidneys healthy (age related changes that were caught early and should not affect his lifespan if kept on proper food). We use First Mate Senior formula that we purchase at Pet Food Express (or online). Any high-quality senior formula should work fine. We will provide the medication for life if needed. He can either eat a prescription kidney food which we can provide or he can eat a low-protein food OTC like FirstMate Pet Foods Senior/Weight Management Variety which is available at Pet Food Express. Location: Pittsburg, CA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Chihuahua / Mixed (medium coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 8 yr old, 7 lb Pomeranian and Chihuahua Mix NEUTERED MALE for ADOPTION Meet Mr Santa's Little Helper Holiday! **FEE SPONSORED** Santa's Little Helper is probably the saddest dog we took from the breeder who went into hospice care. He is a 10 yr old, 7 lb Pomeranian and Chihuahua Mix (PomChi) who was used as a breeder and is just lost and scared right now. (We'd like to point out the first picture where he appears to be smiling... apparently he is quite the beggar and human food makes him happy) He lived outside and made many puppies in his day. Now he has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, free of parasites and has had a dental cleaning and senior labwork. He does take a pill once a day for his thyroid. It is incredibly inexpensive anyway (less than $2/month... yes, seriously) but due an overwhelming response from our friends on Facebook, this medication is covered FOR LIFE. This means that we will provide his medication yearly for life (generally done by reimbursement but we are open). He will be sent with an entire year of medication to get him started. Hypothyroidism is incredibly common in both dogs and humans and is usually diagnosed by routine senior labwork (which is how we found his). As long as he takes his medication, it will cause no future issues. You won't even know he has this condition (it was caught early enough that he had zero symptoms and the medication prevents any symptoms from developing). We named him after Bart Simpson's dog (pictured 3rd) because he needed a name that made people smile. He is a compassion adoption for someone who cares a little less about the outside package and a little more about giving a sad, shy little dog a safe indoor home where he can learn to be loved. Originally he was bewildered and shut down and is decompressing. An ideal home for him would be a senior who needed a lap buddy and who had patience and time to show him love. UPDATE: He takes a few days to warm up to a new person, and then he becomes their stalker. He cries when his person leaves the room. He follows his person around... and he begs for potato chips! He is crate trained and has learned to understand the leash. He uses pee pads but we expect he will need some help about going outside (right now he just lays in a bed and we take him out and he goes). He is great with other dogs and ignores cats. If you had a sweet, shy child who needed a little friend like him maybe they could build their confidence together (he is not mean). We actually are starting to think he is a velcro dog and quite the personality is coming out! To inquire about adoption or foster-to-adoption please email us at beourpet@gmail.com. A generous donor has agreed to sponsor his adoption fee in the hopes that someone will take him in. To make a tax-deductible donation towards his medical care while he is with us (around $500) please do so at www.paypal.me/UOH or send a check to our attention to 4040 Railroad Ave, Pittsburg, CA 94565 #startastoryadopt #shelterpetlove #seniordogsrock #pomchi #pomeranianmix GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Needs reinforcement Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Not really Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No Good with cats?: Yes, we think so Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 12 Umbrella of Hope is a non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals off death row from local shelters. Breed: Pug
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Senior
    Location: Pittsburg, CA
Posted Breed: Pug (short coat). Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 8-10 year old, 28 lb Pug NEUTERED MALE And it all started because of a pug...an elderly broken pug. Meet Gumbo. Everyone in rescue has their form of "kryptonite"... a breed that makes you snap your head around like a Golden Retriever who has seen a squirrel... for Umbrella of Hope volunteer, Elea and her family, that breed is a pug. They own two that they have rescued and have made sure that I know they will foster **ANY** pug who needs them. As one of our best medical fosters, this certainly came in handy for this one. We are lucky to have some awesome pug rescues in this area that ensure the safety of every pug they come across, so while we have taken a few of them there isn't really a need for us to take them often. But, while driving our dog Joker down to the Central Valley last week for his Wings of Rescuetransport to his new family in Rhode Island, we got word of an older pug who could not walk at the Shafter Critters shelter (video in comments). Elea and her family made the two hour detour (on top of their 10 hour drive) to go get him and picked up an unexpected four more dogs to send to our transfer partners. Dropped off one... came home with five. The pug who we have named Gumbo is around 8 years old and a morbidly obese 28 lbs. He should be no more than 20 lbs and probably closer to 17-18 lbs. He could not walk at all. X-rays revealed a broken pelvis that has long since been like this. He likely was hit by a car, did not receive proper (or any) medical care, and then became obese because he had trouble moving around which made moving much at all impossible. Unlike Dr House, I don't like to call people "liars"... but whomever turned this dog into the Shafter Shelter as a stray dog that they found, likely found him in their living room. I have a really hard time believing that this dog moved much of anywhere. Our vet concurs. So to whomever had this sweet old man and let him go without veterinary care and then dumped him as a stray, we'd love to insult you further but are afraid we will not do as well as nature already did ***drops mic*** Gumbo is probably between 8-10 years old. He will be adoptable at some point. There is not much to do for his pelvis except for give him some relief with heavy pain medication until we can get his weight down. Our vet expects that with weight loss and daily pain meds, he will be able to walk as much as any elderly pug to go outside and do his business or meander around the yard to sniff dandelions. He is already walking a little after only one day on proper pain management. Once he has lost some weight he will get his teeth cleaned. He is already (surprisingly) neutered and his senior labwork looked great. He does have dry eye and will require eye drops twice daily to keep him comfortable. He will most certainly be looking for a compassionate adoption by someone who knows they can give him better than what he had before. He is a NICE dog as all pugs are and is very grateful and loving that he is clean, dry and getting his medical needs managed. He is a social boy and he has requested a wagon to help him get around places while he is recuperating. We have added it and a few other things to our Amazon Wish List for him. If you are able to purchase it for him (or Amazon gift cards for us to use towards the purchase) we would certainly appreciate it. Tax-deductible donations towards his ongoing care (expected to run around $1,000) can be made at www.paypal.me/UOH or email us at beourpet@gmail.com for a physical address to send a check. Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" Abused puppy in need of donations for surgery... ***We are trying to raise awareness and funding for Bumble. The story ranged from falling off of a couch to "maybe hit by a car" but after refusing to pay for treatment, he was signed over. It appears (according to several veterinarians that the injury was likely caused by a vicious blow to the leg (a kick?). Our friends at Wings of Rescue were contacted and they asked us to take him into our program. Thanks to the lovely volunteers at Pilots and Paws, he was flown to us to begin his recovery and start his new life. While initially we had hoped to save his leg, the attending faculty/ortho specialists at UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (one of the best vet schools in the country) have told us that amputation is the only option. We will pursue this surgery for him and the therapy needed to get him up and running and we need your help to do so. Due to the need for 24 hour hospitalization and surgery and aftercare, our estimated costs are currently around $7,000 if there are no complications. UPDATE 1: He is gravely anemic due to the trauma and the surgery is risky anyway so he is getting daily bloodwork to try to find the "sweet spot" that lessens his risk. In the meantime, he has been hospitalized on pain killers and antibiotics and medications to help mitigate any blood loss. He is very sweet and gentle but horrifically underweight at 15 lbs (he should be closer to 20 lbs). He is getting hand fed special weight-gain "meatballs" by the staff at our vet clinic every 2 hours in an effort to strengthen his system. UPDATE 2: He is now almost 18 lbs and has been cleared for surgery and will have the procedure in the next couple of days. Fingers crossed and please send love and light his way. Umbrella of Hope "Be Our Pet" 1 yr old, 6 lb Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound Mix SPAYED FEMALE for ADOPTION Meet Miss Twinkle Holiday Twinkle joins us from Solano County Sheriff's Office Animal Care Division Twinkle is a 1 yr old, 6 lb Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound Mix SPAYED FEMALE. She is also microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites. Twinkle is a LOVELY little dog. She is gentle and sweet and happy and loving. She is crate trained, walks well on a leash and loves car rides. She is great with other dogs and seems fine with cats. She even likes kids. Due to her likely Italian Greyhound heritage, she is a THIN BUILD dog with LONG SPINDLY LEGS. We are specifically looking for an adopter who has experience or is willing to research the specific needs of this type of dog. Her tiny front leg bones can break very easily and she should be taught to use stairs or a ramp to get on and off the couch and bed. She should never be asked to jump out of the car. The 4th picture shows exactly what can happen to a dog with long skinny legs who is allowed to jump off of something. It is EXPENSIVE and painful. (We took the picture from google images. We do not have the dog in the 4th picture and it is not Twinkle. Her legs are fine) Due to her breed mix, she is a NATURALLY THIN dog and should stay that way. This means you should be ready for constant comments about how "skinny" she is. Most people's dogs (like most people) are too fat and it seems as if our viewpoints have been skewed regarding what is a healthy weight for animals. We see over and over again where people assume that rescued dogs were STARVED and they try to compensate for that by over-feeding them and making them too fat. It is better for a dog to be slightly thin than to be overweight!!! Because of her bone structure, she should be kept at a healthy and trim weight to protect those delicate bones and joints. She is an adolescent and is in that awkward calorie-burning stage and with normal, regular feeding should get to the point naturally where she is a perfect weight. You should ALWAYS be able to see a dog's ribs -- you should not be able to count them. If you are interested in bringing this lovely, social girl into your home, please send us a DETAILED email about your family and be sure to address both how you plan to protect her legs and keep her at a healthy weight. As of 10/24/15 Pinto is considered to be a hospice dog due to a pituitary tumor. She will be completing a bucket list and can be followed on Facebook with the hashtag #pintosbucketlist Pinto has been with us since July 2015 when she came to us with a healing abscess on her head that our wonderful friends at CONTRA COSTA ANIMAL SERVICES took care of for us by placing a drain. It was very slow to heal and as we were monitoring some unusual findings on her bloodwork over the next few months, we incidentally found out that she had developed Cushing's Disease (which is treatable/manageable). She was put on a diet to help her lose some weight because she was having some issues with her back legs. She also has had a snotty nose that would get better and then get worse after many rounds of antibiotics and a culture. Her right eye has also been bulged out and that did not get better after her abscess resolved. Putting all of these pieces together, our vet x-rayed her head and is pretty confident that she has a brain tumor on her pituitary gland that is growing pretty fast. We have entered her into our hospice program. She is now no longer on a diet and can eat whatever she likes. We will be monitoring her quality of life and making sure that every day counts and when she is no longer having good days, we will let her go. Right now she is happy, active and HUNGRY. She has now decided to end her life in the best way possible... By starting and COMPLETING a Bucket List. If you are local (SF Bay Area of CA) and want to take her on a date, please email us at beourpet@gmail.com. If you are not local, please consider taking a hospice dog from your local shelter or rescue and giving them an amazing sunset. (Pinto is from Contra Costa Animal Services) Pinto is a 8 Year old, 6lb, Chihuahua, SPAYED Female For ADOPTION! She is also microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites! Pinto was dropped off in the night drop off box at Contra Costa Animal services, when the shelter workers found her she was scared and hurt. She had an ENORMOUS abscess on the right side of her forehead. They drained it (you could even see her skull underneath it, poor baby!) and set about fixing her, all through out this she behaved like a model citizen regardless of how hurt she was! Thanks to the amazing work by Contra Costa Animal services she is healing well. She currently has stents holding her sore bits open, she looks like she's going to make a fantastic recovery very soon and is going to be back to her vivacious self soon. (UPDATE; We are happy to annouce she's made an amazing recovery and is slowly growing back some fuzz around her old injury) She's got an amazing personality, she has the cutest bossy little bark if she wants attention but quickly stops if you give her the eye! She seems very independent but also a lover of cuddles! She loves lounging in the garden on the grass and if you're lucky she'll show you Her famous grass wiggle! She even gives kisses if you tell her she's pretty. She also knows how to sit and is great with other dogs! If you think Pinto is better off in your arms, email us at beourpet@gmail.com or fill in an application online! Welcome to UOH Pinto!
