More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Nevada and his brothers are shepherd mix puppies, born on the property of an animal hoarder. The boys are very, very shy and could not be touched when they first arrived. Now, thanks to the patience and dedication of our loving volunteers, the boys can be pet, but they still won't walk on leashes. Our team members spend time every day sitting with the boys and talking to them quietly to gain their trust. The brothers are going to require a lot more time in our care before they are ready for adoption, but we see small bits of progress every day. We are desperate for sponsors to help underwrite the costs for boarding these 4 pups, as they are not ready to move into home environments yet--they are simply too fearful and they hide from sight. Please look at these precious innocents and make a gift in any amount to help us give them the lives they always deserved. Your gift is tax deductible and sincerely appreciated by each of us. Please go to our website and complete an adoption application at: http://www.gsroc.org/application.asp. Delilah

      rescue
      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Delilah is brand new at GSROC. She has just arrived from a crowded shelter. We were initially told by the shelter she was 2 years old, but our vet believes she approximately 6 years old. Either way, this sweet girl has a friendly attitude, likes children and is filled with love and loyalty. All she needs is a family of her very own. . Delilah is in a foster home and has shown that she can get along easily with other large dogs. She is respectful of their space and happy to hang out with them. She has met the grandchildren in her foster home and had a blast when they came to visit. She would do fine in a home with children. As sweet as this girl is however, she seems to have a thing about small dogs – she barks at them and we believe she would do best in a home with only large dogs. Delilah is housebroken and crate trained Please go to our website and complete an adoption application at: http://www.gsroc.org/application.asp. Her time was running short and her options were limited. GSROC heard of her plight and sent our rescue mobile to save her. This girl loves her squeaky toys! Toss her a toy to play with and she will be your new pal. Then, watch her trot off with her new “baby” as happy as can be. Gia tested well at the shelter with other large dogs. rescue
      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Baby
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). This little cutie is Zena. She was left with a trainer by her new owner so she could learn her puppy ABCs. Sadly, her owner died while Zena was in training and no family member came forward to claim her. GSROC got the call - how could we say no? Zena is still a puppy and has lots of energy to burn. Like all puppies she is full of fun, playfulness and is very inquisitive. She likes to explore, romp and play. Zena is a very smart girl and eager to learn. She will thrive in a happy, active home. However, she does not like small children so we recommend an adult home only. Please think long and hard before adopting a dog Zena's age. She will require someone who is willing to commit to training her. This is a big commitment of time and effort. If you are not interested in this, then please consider an older dog. Please go to our website and complete an adoption application at: http://www.gsroc.org/application.asp. An adoption counselor will contact you to go over your application and assist you in determining which dog may be best for your particular situation.

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). This sweet 2 year old girl was no longer wanted by her family. So, what did they do? They took her to the shelter after hours and left her in the night drop box to be found by kennel workers the next morning. Yes, you read that correctly. Just dropped her off in the middle of the night and left her there. When we heard this story, we were determined to show Chloe Rose a better life. So, our volunteer hopped in her car and drove in traffic to rescue this sweet girl. Chloe Rose was so happy to learn she didn’t have to stay in that scary shelter. Chloe Rose is a very pretty girl and she knows it! She walks proudly, wagging her tail as if to say…”…here I am! Look at me!” Chloe Rose wants to make sure other dogs recognize just how special she is. We are working with her to brush up on her doggy social skills. She is no shrinking violet, that’s for sure. She walks easily on a leash and likes people. Please go to our website and complete an adoption application at: http://www.gsroc.org/application.asp.
