Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Coonhound / Mixed (medium coat). Rosie - A Young Shepherd Mix One look at Rosie and you can see the love and liveliness in her face. Rosie is just happy to meet everyone, especially if you have a kong or tennis ball to throw for her. Rosie is about 2 years old and she is half American Staffordshire Terrier and half German Shepherd (this is confirmed by a DNA test). We call her a "Rocket Full of Love." Rosie can take off at full speed to fetch her toy then turn on a dime to rush back to greet her friends. Rosie has begun to receive basic training and is learning to sit patiently and wait for her toy or treat. She is a quick learner and eager to please. Rosie is very excitable around other dogs, and most likely would do best with someone that has no other animals. She does have a strong prey drive, so no kitties or small animals in her household. An active family would suit her just fine, especially someone with a large fenced in back yard. Sedona Shepherd Sanctuary's mission is to rescue adult and senior German Shepherd and Shepherd mixes and find them loving homes. All of our dogs are fully vetted and up to date on all their shots Our adoption area includes New Jersey, Delaware Valley, Manhattan, Southern New York and Eastern Pennsylvania. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Fiesty and Chloe are a pair of 7 year old German Shepherd sisters looking for their new forever home. With their classic German Shepherd good looks, they will have everyone who walks by turning their heads and asking to meet and pet them. They are the best of friends and always looking out for each other. They love to go on walks together, hang out and be couch potatoes, or go in a back yard and run around like young puppies. Fiesty and Chloe have grown up and spent their entire lives around other dogs and people. They are well socialized and are able to adjust to just about any environment. Fiesty and Chloe are good in a home and even will go right into their crates on command. They have lived in a family setting their entire lives. Sadly, their family's economic situation has changed and their mom is looking for a home with the space and time to give to these two beautiful dogs. Are you looking to expand your pack? Fiesty and Chloe will make a great addition to any home, whether you already have dogs, or are looking to bring a pair of fun loving German Shepherds. Fiesty and Chloe will only be adopted together as a bonded pair. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Magnum – 6 year old Friendly and Active German Shepherd Magnum is a boy who is always in motion. Not one to sit and pose for a picture, he likes to move around, greeting new people, checking out new scents, playing with toys, or just going for a nice long walk. A handsome boy, Magnum has some very distinguishing features, a soulful face, large classic German Shepherd ears, long legs and a nice soft coat. Magnum is well socialized around people and is happy to make friends. For part of his life, Magnum lived with a large Labrador, and is friendly and interested in meeting larger dogs. He prefers chasing cats to making friends with cats. Magnum is in good health, although he could stand to gain about 10 pounds and he did come to us intact, so we will be getting him neutered in the next few weeks. Magnum would be best suited for a family with some large dog experience and children over 12. Spartacus

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Spartacus – A Handsome 5 Year Old German Shepherd Sedona Shepherd was contacted about a handsome 5 year-old German Shepherd in desperate need of medical care and a new home. Spartacus had been living in a basement with no heat in the winter or air conditioning in the summer time. He was neglected by his owner, who would leave him alone for days or weeks at a time. If not for a caring neighbor, Spartacus would not have survived. She made sure to feed him and give him water and love. When Spartacus new guardian took him to a vet on her own initiative, she found out he had a rectal hernia that had not been treated for months, causing him severe pain when going to the bathroom. He also had cyrptorchid which had never been treated. If both of these were left untreated, especially the hernia, it would be life-threatening. Although we knew that the procedures would be expensive and complicated, we also knew that Spartacus had nowhere else to turn. Local authorities refused to intervene, and his ‘owner’ was not going to pay for medical treatment. On January 2, Sedona took Spartacus into our program and immediately scheduled him to have surgery two days later. Repairing the hernia was an even more difficult procedure because it had been left untreated for so long. His stay at the veterinary hospital had been extended as he ran into a number of complications. Spartacus has a trusting and sweet disposition. The unexpected complications have stretched our finances. Please help us continue to give Spartacus the necessary care he needs to finally have a chance to live a happy life with a family that will love him and always care for him. We have set up a YouCaring page to help raise funds to pay specifically for Spartacus veterinary bills. Spartacus is a joy to meet and would be suitable for just about any household. If you are interested in adopting Spartacus we also have a foster to adopt program available for Spartacus. He will be available for adoption in late January. Romeo

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Chocolate Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Romeo is a lovable, and as you can see, a loving German Shepherd mix. His favorite activity is giving and receiving hugs and kisses. As his name would imply, Romeo is extremely friendly, always ready to meet and engage with new people. Our boy Romeo came to us from a city shelter. The story is that he had a girl friend named Juliette (true story) and that he spent a fair amount of time with Juliette as a stray. They may have even made a few puppies along the way. Juliette found a new home, so now Romeo is looking to shower his affection with his own family. (Minus, of the course, the ability to make puppies). Romeo is friendly with other large breed dogs, but does seem to enjoy chasing smaller animals, like cats and squirrels. Romeo is in excellent health. He would benefit from a refresher obedience course. Since we do not know his complete background, we are looking for a home with children over 10. If you are looking for a happy, friendly shepherd mix, Romeo is your dog.
