More About German Shorthaired Pointer Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat). Charlee is a perfect girl! Meet Charlee! This charming 6 year old liver roan female GSP is a classic example of her breed. Charlee is intelligent, bold, very energetic, quirky, and a characteristically affectionate dog that is cooperative and easily trained. She has a delightful, gentle disposition. She is always very happy and content. She enjoys the company of her foster parents and will seek out their attention, and also loves to meet new people. Overall, Charlee is good with people, kids, and other dogs. She loves to splash around in her small pool after she has cleared the backyard of any “critters” and she enjoys playing fetch with a ball. Charlee has also discovered what a Kong is and loves this special treat, as well as ice cubes made with beef bone broth. Charlee’s favorite toy now is a plush cell phone, which she will run around with in her mouth, both indoors and outside. She refuses to “de-stuff” this toy! Charlee enjoys rummaging through the doggie toy box in our living room, picking out toys, one by one, and taking them to the back yard. Charlee is crate trained, house trained and walks well on a leash with a harness. If you are looking for a smart and loving dog that is typical of her breed then Charlee is the girl for you. Posted Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat). Deno is a happy, athletic boy! Here’s Deno! This handsome 7 year old GSP is a sweet, well-behaved guy that loves people, gets along with other dogs, and loves to hunt lizards and other critters in the yard. His foster family says “Deno is a great dog and is so mellow for such a large dog. He settled in like he had always lived here.” Deno is a gentle giant at 70 lbs. He is independent, but also very settled emotionally – nothing seems to bother him. He likes to be loved on and he’s a cuddler. He has moderate to high energy and has a lot stamina. He would prefer to be the only dog, but does get along fine with other dogs, large or small. Deno is easily trainable and is quick to learn new things. He will go into a crate, but prefers to be out. Deno is alone a few hours, a couple of days a week. He is left in the house, but has a doggie door so that he can go outside. He is respectful of the home and does not need to be crated. He does need some leash work. He starts out pulling but after a time he seems to get it and walks at a heel. He has pretty good recall and will shake your hand. Deno is looking for an active family that will exercise him on a daily basis. Deno has so much love to give to his forever family and wants so much to be a part of a family. Posted Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat). Little Ellsie is a sweet 3 year-old GSP mix! Hello Ellsie! This sweet little 3 year-old GSP mix is the definition of adorable. She takes a few days to warm up after a hard life outside before she came to us, but once she knows you, she falls hard! She loves to smile at her people when they come home by crinkling up her nose. It's the cutest thing! Ellsie can live with other dogs, but prefers those that are less pushy and does have some tendency towards resource guarding. She has experience living with her mom and siblings. She also may have lived with a housecat in her last home, but we think she might be a little too kitty-focused. Ellsie definitely has a strong prey drive. She goes crazy for squirrels and will keep a mental map of where she saw a squirrel forever! Her other favorite things are cuddling on the couch with her humans or finding some water to play in - set up a kiddy pool and she'll be there in a flash! She's also house trained and does well at home alone while her people are at work during the day. Do you have a spot in your life for a squirrel-loving cuddle bug? Then Ellsie is your gal! Little Ellsie does have heartworm disease. She has a few months of treatment ahead of her to become healthy again. She's available as a foster to adopt while she undergoes treatment. We rescued Ellsie along with her mom Franny. They can be adopted together or separately. Status: Undergoing treatment for heartworm disease, available for foster to adopt Location: San Francisco Bay Area, CA Adoption $: 310.00 with a $50.00 refund upon completion of a positive-reinforcement training class from a trainer on our training list, or approved by us in advance. While he can be a little uncertain at first, a few days and lots of belly rubs and he’ll be in love! He just needs a little patience and a lot of love to help him gain his confidence. After living his first few years outside in a kennel, we can already tell he’s going to get used to the finer things in life! Franny lived most of her life outside before she came to us, but she’s no stranger to the life of luxury. She was quick to take to the couch and will happily cuddle with you in bed if invited up. Franny is a good girl with other dogs and would love to play with some furry friends. She also has good manners, knows how to sit and shake and will go into a crate (a bit reluctantly).
