More About German Shorthaired Pointer Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

She takes a few days to warm up after a hard life outside before she came to us, but once she knows you, she falls hard! She loves to smile at her people when they come home by crinkling up her nose. It’s the cutest thing! Ellsie is generally good with other dogs, but prefers those that are less pushy. She has experience living with her mom and siblings. She also may have lived with a housecat in her last home, but will need to be carefully tested. Ellsie definitely has a strong prey drive. She goes crazy for squirrels and will keep a mental map of where she saw a squirrel forever! Do you have a spot in your life for a squirrel-loving cuddle bug? Then Ellsie is your gal! Franny lived most of her life outside before she came to us, but she’s no stranger to the life of luxury. She was quick to take to the couch and will happily cuddle with you in bed if invited up. Franny is a good girl with other dogs and would love to play with some furry friends. She also has good manners, knows how to sit and shake and will go into a crate (a bit reluctantly). Little Lucy

      Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat). Little Lucy is a sweet girl who needs a calm, loving home Little Lucy may be our tiniest GSP we’ve had, but she has so much love to give! She is great with other dogs, is house trained, crate trained, and is learning new commands quickly! She does need someone who can continue to work with her on her training and give her clear boundaries. She also would benefit from having a canine companion at home with her to help with her socialization and keep her company. As with any other young GSP, she needs a good amount of exercise so an active home would be ideal for Little Lucy, but also one that can create a calming environment when she’s not out exercising. Please read more about the placement criteria for Little Lucy before applying: 1) Rural or quiet suburban setting – no cities. 2) Calm environment – not a hustling bustling household with people coming and going all the time or tons of guests. 3) The right family or person – one that can provide a consistent relationship with LL, along with a routine, schedule, exercise, and daily work on the training activities (which can be incorporated into the daily routine throughout the day, does not have to mean a separate hour of training) 4) Kids – preferably none. Could consider older teens, depending on the personality of the kids – calm, respectful. Visiting kids: calm respectful kids under supervision and with Little Lucy having her own safe space that she can retreat to at any time where she will not be bothered or cornered. Status: Available (please see placement criteria above) Location: Sacramento Area, CA Adoption $: $310.00 with a $50.00 refund upon completion of a positive-reinforcement agility or obedience training class from a trainer on our training list, or approved by us in advance.
