Posted Breed: Great Dane / Husky. In early 2015 a beautiful Great Dane/Husky came into our care. Fletcher is now 5-years-old and continues "looking" for his very own human. Fletcher has been blind his whole life. Although he appears to sometimes see things, that is evidence of how he has adapted to his disability. His vision, or complete lack of it, was verified by a professional animal ophthalmologist. Fletch does not know anything different, but humans have a tendency to feel sorry for this big boy which has resulted in Fletcher having some behavioral issues. Fletcher, like any dog, gets bored. He is a very smart boy and needs someone looking for a dog to participate in dog challenging activities (obedience, nose work, etc.). Fletcher desperately needs someone who will NOT feel sorry for him, but a human who is willing to help build his confidence through both appropriate leadership and mental exercises. Despite his blindness, Fletcher is completely capable of meeting all the basic behavioral requirements of a seeing dog if asked of him. Unfortunately, not very much has been asked of Fletcher, so he has learned to be stubborn – he doesn’t have to sit, down, wait, walk…. Because most often people cave in and give him what he wants. Fletcher needs someone who will expect more of him, and as a result, help him become the dog he truly can be. Fletcher is presently staying at our holding kennel after trying a few different foster homes. Here is what we have learned about Fletcher: Fletcher needs time to acclimate to new surroundings. He’s been in the shelter now for quite some time, but when he first arrived – he was NOT comfortable in his new surroundings. It took time and patience to get him there. Because of his blindness, he can get overstimulated quickly. He doesn’t know what is around him, which can cause fearful reactions. Because of his insecurity and fears, he has learned to pick a human, claim that human and guard that human. (He wants to keep his human close for protection and security). For this reason, Fletcher would be best suited for a home with a lot of routine and for a human who is dog knowledgeable or very interested and willing to learn about dog behavior. He will need a confident human who can challenge these pushy behaviors but also build Fletcher’s confidence and security. Fletcher would do best without other dogs or cats – In addition to a very strong prey drive, other animals are ‘unpredicatable’ to Fletcher. He wasn’t given enough experience around them in his former life, so he prefers to be without the company of other animals. He walks well on a leash, but needs instruction – so he needs a walker who will interact with Fletcher on his walks. (Step up, Step Down, Watch it!). Fletcher does enjoy walks with the kennel volunteers who help him feel safe and secure on his walks. Fletcher does LOVE riding in the car, treats, and frozen carrots!! Fletcher does enjoy time in the play yard, playing fetch and tug. A home with a fenced in yard is necessary for him and he will learn his boundaries in short order. Fletcher needs a family that will provide him with guidance and leadership and not pity. He loves his stuffed toys and looks adorable carrying them! Stuffed toy collection included with adoption! Great Dane

A.K.A. : Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff
Overview: The Great Dane is a huge dog with a sweet and gentle nature. He needs a lot of space for exercise, though he can be very calm and well-behaved indoors.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): 100-120
Height (in): male: 30-32, female: 28-30
Colors: Brindle, black-masked fawn, blue, black, harlequin (white with irregular black patches). Mantle (black and white)
Coat: Hair is short and smooth.
Character: Great Danes are affectionate, calm, loyal, and intelligent. Although they do not bark very much, they make great watch dogs.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They are usually wary around strangers, but are good with welcomed visitors.
Care: The Great Dane should be grooming with a rubber brush during periods of shedding.
Training: This breed grows quite large, so for an early lesson he should be trained not to pull on the leash. He's quite eager to please, so a proper approach should provide great results.

Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries.
Life Expectancy: 6-8

More About Great Dane Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Rottweiler-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Berwick, PA
Posted Breed: Rottweiler / Shepherd / Mixed. Maxter is a 2 year old Rottie/Shepherd mix. He had a rough start in life and just arrived in a foster home after several weeks in a boarding kennel. So far we’ve learned that he is a big, heart-stealing, teddy bear of a dog with a constantly wagging tail. He loves car rides and meeting new people. In the short time at his foster home, he has shown that he responds to his name, knows sit and shake, quickly learned down, and almost has roll over figured out. He’ll do most anything for a treat, which he takes very nicely. He walks well on leash. He loves, loves, loves to engage the other dogs in the house in play (even the reluctant one) and will sneak up on the bed for a cuddle. He’s enjoying the company and care of the older kids there too. Because of his size and energey level, he'd do best in a forever home with older (over 10) kids who are dog savvy. He would also do best with another dog (larger) in the home. Maxter Is NOT good with cats. If you open your heart and home to this special boy, you’ll be rewarded with a special, loyal friend who will love you forever! Angel Ann

      Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Location: Berwick, PA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed. Angel Ann is a gorgeous mixed-breed, bi-color spayed female. She is approximately 1 1/2 years old (best guess). Angel was found by her fosters when she was apparently abandoned on a very cold, damp, rainy night. Angel was desperately seeking help from anyone who would open their door to her. It was obvious that Angel had recently had pups. Thankfully, the door was opened by her present foster mom and dad. Her rescuers called H2H and we immediately sent Angel for medical care. Angel recovered from her depleted condition, was updated with vaccines, and was spayed in late December. She is now a beautiful girl with a soft, shiny brindle and white coat. Angel is very loving and sweet. She gets along with other dogs but has not actually lived with cats to our knowledge. It is unknown how she is with small children; she has been very good with respectful children eight and Older. She has always been on her very best behavior at the vet clinic. Angel loves to cuddle in bed and likes to be under the blanket; she thinks she is a lap dog. She enjoys car rides; frequently accompanying her foster mom when she goes to the store, post office, etc. She is affectionate and loves to give kisses. She entertains herself with her favorite toys, rope and nylabone. Many days she can be found basking in the sun on the arm of the couch. Angel doesn't like to be away from her humans. Angel can be a little protective in her foster home and in her foster's car, but when she is away from home she is inquisitive and loveable. Her foster mom is using training techniques to help her be more relaxed when visitors arrive. This girl will make the right person or family an awesome companion. She is young; willing and ready to learn. You can apply online NOW if you think Angel Ann would be a good match for you! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Maverick is currently in residence at our holding facility and has quickly become a favorite of the volunteers who care for him. He is a gentle sweet soul who seems to have received little attention in his life and now soaks up attention like a "sponge". Our kennel volunteers report that he loves to roam freely when they are on duty and has discovered a treasure trove of dog toys--the storage bin where extras are kept! Maverick enthusiastically started emptying the toy chest like a little kid on Christmas morning. Speaking of Christmas, check out his video where he enjoyed opening gifts Chritsmas morning. Maverick is a mature pittie or mix. Although, he looks like senior boy because of his grey muzzle, some vet records indicate his age somewhere around 6. Family members estimated his age to be a bit older. He was relinquished to us from a life spent mostly outside, but quickly adjusted to the warmth and attention he receives from our volunteers. He enjoys walks with his kennel mates Bekka and Fletcher. And does well with other dogs when properly introduced. Mavericks favorite things include tennis balls, toys (by the bin full), and peanut butter. He knows basic obedience and will work for tasty little hot dog bites too. He likes car rides, even to the vet, where he is a well-behaved gentleman. He is waiting for a forever family that he can give his love and devotion too. Applications also being accepted for a foster home or forever home. IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ Click here for the ADOPTION APPLICATION if you are interested in adopting this pet. Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Greyhound Mix

      Age: Young
      Location: Berwick, PA
Posted Breed: Greyhound / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. Callie is a 1 year old beautiful, 42 pound bundle of energy. Callie is a very intelligent pup. She came to the H2H holding kennel in an attempt to expose her to beneficial, new experiences including meeting unfamiliar dogs and interacting with many different people. This experience has helped to build Callie’s confidence and she is less fearful than she had been previously. Callie can be people reactive until she is familiar with individuals and will need a human who is willing and confident to help her with proper introductions Callie is very trainable and in addition to the traditional sit, stay, leave it type commands, she has learned several new, fun commands including jumping through a hoop, saying her “prayers” and playing dead. Callie is the ideal companion for someone who wants to be very active with their canine friend. She would excel at agility, benefiting from both the physical challenge as well as the mental challenge it presents. While Callie is a big cuddle bug at times, it is necessary that her ideal family be willing to “give her a job”. Mindless running in a yard will create anxiety in her and walks would be beneficial but would not provide the mental challenge this little lady demands. Callie is quite comfortable in a crate. She is an intense chewer and so will need to be crated when home alone. The crate provides both a place where Callie feels safe and a place where her human’s belongings can be kept safe. The Kong, extreme toys are best suited for Callie because of the intensity of her chewing. Callie is very interested in playing with other dogs. Her high energy level and exceptional agility can be intimidating to other dogs and so slow introductions are necessary. She has been reactive to other dogs in the past but keeping her mind busy and exposing her safely to other dogs seems to be showing her that other dogs do not need to be feared. Her energy level makes her not good around young children, as she appears distressed and unintentionally may knock them over in response to their excitement. With an appropriate investment of time, Callie is going to be an exceptional companion for the right human(s). With the right patient, confidence building human, Callie will find her balance of affection, enthusiasm and boundaries and we promise, her human(s) will never look back!! If you think you have what it takes to catch and keep this little lady’s attention please fill out an online application! She is spayed and up to date on vaccines (as are all our dogs). Breed: Mutt

Posted Breed: Coonhound (short coat). Ruger is a very handsome 6 year old Black and Tan Coonhound. True to his breed, he is high energy and loves to be the center of attention. Ruger was trained for hunting, loves other dogs, and is neutered. He currently lives with a 3 year old child and an 11 year old German Shepherd, and a cat. He is looking for a new home where he can be walked several times a day or have the run of a large fenced area. Ruger needs obedience training, but does walk well on a leash with a halti. His nose tends to drive the walk without it. He has no aggression and comes when called. He has been known to counter surf, raid the trash, and steal a bit of food out of the kids' hands when they're not looking. (But hey!---who can blame a guy for passing up an opportunity!) He is a fun loving guy. (And he thinks crates are no fun.) Ruger is waiting for someone to give him a chance! He has a great personality and a charming hound howl. (To put it bluntly, he is not especially quiet!) Ruger would make the perfect pet with a small investment of daily exercise and some basic training and a routine. Just look at those eyes - - waiting for someone to give him a chance. IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ Click here for the ADOPTION APPLICATION if you are interested in adopting this pet.
