If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact McNeely for more information about this pet. Lucy is a sweet mama dog that had 9 babies in MCAS and was doing the best that she could in a stressful situation. Lucy is/was a great mama to her puppies and passes that watchful eye and protecting nature on the other dogs in her pack too. She feels that all the dogs around her are hers to watch out for and take care of -- she is very protective. This protective quality also extends to her/your home - she will help keep strangers out. In her down time Lucy is just a big couch potato who loves hanging out with her people and chilling. I do not know what her life was like before the shelter but I believe it was pretty rough. One look in her eyes and you can tell that for yourself - she has one eye that is a little cloudy and that slightly affects her vision but it does not slow her down! Lucy is house trained and dog door trained. She is heartworm negative and up to date on all her shots. She is not so great on a leash and pulls especially when she wants something. She knows sit but that is about as far as her knowledge of commands go. Cat - well they are just toys that run right? Seriously, she likes to follow the cat and if the cat runs she will chase but she has not tried to harm her once. It is just the running that catches her attention.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Corbett is such a great dog! He is super clever and very loyal. He is wonderful around other dogs, walks well on the leash, is house-trained and past all the puppy (chewing!) behavior but is still young and cute. He is loving and obedient and will make someone a very happy owner.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Hill for more information about this pet. Dorthy is an approximately 2 year old spayed female blue heeler mix looking for an only dog home. Dorthy will make a great companion for someone. She is happy, attentive, eager to please, loving, and fun. Dorthy is crate trained, house broken, and great on a leash. She has a very sweet disposition. She just wants to be with people. Dorthy does well with children (I have an 18mo old and 11 yr old). She will sit and let you pet her all day. She likes to sit with us on the couch. She enjoys snuggling and watching movies. Dorthy is an affectionate, compliant dog. She does not want to socialize with other dogs. She just chooses not to interact with dogs and will growl at dogs that approach her. Dorothy must go to any only dog home. She has been introduced to a cat and did well. She does not do well when left home alone in the crate all day. She needs to be able to stay out of the crate, go to work with someone, or maybe live with a family with a stay at home mom or retired person. She has completed heartworm treatment and is now heartworm negative. Dorthy is currently vaccinated and current on heartworm and flea prevention.

      Piper

      rescue
      Breed: Beagle-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: The Woodlands, TX
Posted Breed: Beagle / Mixed (short coat). To summarize who Piper is into a paragraph might be difficult, but the best word for her is amazing. She is a medium sized dog (about 35 pounds), part Beagle, up to date on shots and will be spayed once her puppies leave her. She is thought to be about 4 years old. She also doesn't seem to shed much. Piperr is also 100% potty trained. Piper has not had a good life prior to entering foster care. It is thought that she must've lived on a chain causing her to be slightly afraid of leashes. Due to living on the chain, Piper has no front teeth on top or bottom. We think she chewed the metal out of boredom. She was brought to the shelter as a stray the day she had given birth. When I got her 2 days later she was very afraid. I had to carry her everywhere for the first 2 days because she wouldn't walk. It seemed as though she had never been in a house or walked on a leash. Eventually, I earned her trust. Somehow, although she is a dog, she has managed to let me feel her gratitude for saving her. Piper is now a playful, loving and happy dog. She is timid when meeting new people, but not skittish. She warms up quickly. Piper loves children and has been around cats without any issues. She was a great mom to her 5 puppies. Piper loves to give kisses, snuggle and if you can't find her, she's probably on the bed with her head on a pillow just like a human! Piper doesn't bark much, but if she needs to go outside or is hungry, she whines to let you know. Piper is calm and even-tempered. She needs to be part of a family who can guarantee her love for the remainder of her life- she deserves that. Piper loves being outside and does well in the yard for an hour or so alone. She can also be trusted in the house alone, but I must warn you, she enjoys hoarding toys :). She will find all the toys she has access to (and maybe a sock or two) and pile them up somewhere in a corner. Piper will make a wonderful companion for someone who wants a loyal and loving pet. You will have no doubt that she loves you as she has the strangest, but sweetest way of showing you. She also minds very well, comes when called and is eager to please. Piper is one-of-a-kind and if you are looking for a calm, loving dog to spend all of your free time with, she is your girl! I can't put into words how special she is. Piper needs a fenced yard as she should never be left tied up. Doing so causes her mood and behavior to change and she will become very fearful. Once she recognizes the leash as a positive thing, she will do very well and has already made vast improvements.

She's young and still needs basic commands and leash training, but she is eager to please and very treat motivated. Please consider making this sweetheart part of your family!

      Location: The Woodlands, TX
Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Eppright for more information about this pet. Nestle originally came from the county animal shelter. She and her siblings were surrendered by an owner when they were 5 months old. All of the pups were very sick and were going to be euthanized unless good Samaritans adopted them or an animal rescue group took them, nursed them back to health, socialized with and loved on them. Little Nestle is a miracle baby and she is ready for the final chapter in her happy ending story – a forever home of her own. She is between 7-8 months old now, happy and healthy and ready to leave the nest. It took us a bit longer to crate-train and house-train her because she was obviously not taken care of and socialized when she was very young. Look at her now! She is fully crate-trained and leash-trained, and she has gone weeks without an accident in the house. She is either left in the backyard with other foster dogs or crated when I am out of the home, and she runs free with the other household dogs when I am home. When crated, she barks when she needs to go outside; when loose in the house and needing to go, she circles. Her puppy curiosity sometimes gets her in trouble – she is fascinated by plastic bags and loves to hear them “crinkle”. She is very easy to correct, though, and has a strong desire to please. She crates easily and associates them with treats; she loves chews and squeaky toys of course, and she would be in heaven if her forever family had a pool or took her to the lake – she loves water!!! She has been fostered in homes with other dogs and gets along with all of them. She is not dominant and has shown no food aggression here. She and another foster dog eat together, each with his/her own bowl. She has also been in a foster home with young children and she loves them. Because Nestle is so gentle on leash and because she is not likely to grow much bigger, I think it is fine for Nestle to be in a house with children as long as they are respectful and have some experience with puppies. Nestle has only had passing contact with a cat and she was curious but respectful. With cats who are dog-tolerant, she should get along just fine. If you think that Nestle might be your girl, please call me, Kristi, her foster mom at 281-797-6280. I would like to meet with her future family. I will miss this girl! P.S. We did lose one of Nestle’s siblings, but the other three made it into loving homes thanks to Operation Pets Alive and thanks to loving people like you <3

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Shownes for more information about this pet. Hi!!! My name is Cooter and I am a sweet man. My foster mommy loves me so much and I love her because she hugs me and cuddles me a lot. I had a happy life with my owner until my owner died. I had a companion dog and we found ourselves in the animal shelter. I was scared because I didn't understand what was happening. My companion dog got moved to adoptions. I was so scared that they did not move me. I was lonely and didn't know what was going to happen to me. Why was I so disposable once the owner I loved died? Well, this nice lady came along and saw how afraid I was and she brought me home to live with her and other foster dogs until I can find my next furever home. I am a good boy. I am approximately 5 years old and just want to sit beside my owner and cuddle. My face looks like I am always worried, but I am always ok as long as my owner is around. I am house broken and really just LOVE being with my human. I would be a perfect fur baby for an older person who wants to have someone to watch tv with. I promise to give my new human more love than they can imagine. My foster mother says I am such a good boy and I deserve a nice home with my very own human.
