Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Brittany / Mixed (short coat). Hi, my name is Mickey! I am a happy, playful, funny puppy who can't wait to find my forever home! Oh, and I'm also deaf! But don't worry, that doesn't slow me down one bit! I had a home once and a family I loved very much! They adopted me when I was just a little baby. But they soon figured out that I couldn't hear and they took me to the city pound to be euthanized. I was so scared and confused. Why did they stop loving me just cuz my ears don't work? But Red Collar Rescue knew I was an amazing dog - deaf or not! Off I went to the vet for all my shots, neutering and a microchip. I am a lovebug - never met a lap I didn't like but mostly I like to play, run, and play some more! I am great with dogs my own size and I'm super smart. I even know some hand signals. I am currently living with a foster, and working with a trainer to learn even more! Email info@redcollar.org to adopt me! Age: 3 yrs Weight: 40 lbs Dogs? ok Cats? no Kids? ok Needs Foster? no UPDATE from Mickey's foster family: Mickey loves to play. He does very well in the car. He would do well with a canine playmate or two. Our neighbors, have a small child. Mickey did well when we introduced them. Mickey sometime's barks when he first meets people. That's just him saying hello. Mickey cannot hear so he doesn't realize how scary he can sound. Once he meets you, he's all about hugs and kisses. He is very motivated by pleasing us. He loves and needs to be told he's a good boy. Mickey is starting his AKC Canine Good Citizen class and will be done in a few weeks. He's goofy and will accept that he is not the alpha in a pack. He will try to be second though. He loves being close to his people. He sleeps with us and snuggles with us at night. He likes chew toys and socks, especially Himalayan dog chews. Mickey will thrive in a home that can give him lots of attention, TLC and will be patient while they adjust to each other. In many ways, he is still a puppy. He is unique and will be worth the love and care because Mickey possesses an infinite capacity to love.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Natasha is being fostered in Houston, TX. She is available for out-of-state adoptions. Please see below for details. Natasha asks: Do you love to give belly rubs? Do you love to give ear-scratches? Do you like to get dog-kisses? Would it be OK if I sometimes lick your arm or leg like you were my own personal lollipop? Do you have a thing for pups who resemble baby hippos? Do you like a dog that snores a little? Would it be OK if I leaned against you while we watch TV on the couch? Would it be OK if I'd rather stay home and snuggle with you than go to a dog park? Do you wish you had a dog who loves to hop in the car and just go for rides? (Drive-throughs are my favorites!) Are you gonna share those Chik-Fil-A nuggets with me? Can we be best friends for always? If you answered yes to most or all of these, you might be my perfect human! Email info@redcollar.org so we can meet! Age: 3 yrs Weight: 45 lbs Dogs? ok Cats? unknown Kids? ok Needs Foster? yes Many of our adoptions are to out-of-area adopters. The process is, for the most part, the same as it is for in-town adoptions. The adoption fee to out-of-state destinations in the U.S. is $550, which includes air transport, traveling crate, and health certificate. The adoption fee for Canadian destinations is $600 (Canadian). (Please note that there is an additional estimated $80 pick up charge in Canada). RCR takes care of all of the flight arrangements. Because of the distance, it is not possible for you to meet the dog, in person, unless you come to Houston. We can often send videos and/or do FaceTime interviews to allow you to “meet” the dog. Why should you consider adopting a dog from Houston? Houston is the #2 kill city in the U.S. City and County shelters often take in a combined 200-300 animals per day. The number of homeless pets and resulting euthanasias are staggering -- the average "live release rate" from Houston area shelters is only about 35-50%. Houston is estimated to have over 1 million homeless animals. Over 100,000 are killed in Harris Co shelters every year. Red Collar Rescue volunteers work tirelessly to save as many as we can, but the Houston area is saturated with so many pets in need of a home and not enough adopters. To put it simply, we encourage out of state adoptions because it helps us save more lives. We hope that you will consider one of our many adoptable pets who are waiting for a second chance at a forever home - wherever it may be!

I had a bit of a rough time living on the streets, and did not like being at the city pound either. I was just not super happy to be there, so my days were numbered. But some volunteers took the time to get to know me a little, and saw my sweet side shining through. Then Red Collar Rescue saved me and got me out of the pound to safety! I'm quite a stunner in the looks department. I'm a good boy, kind of quiet and introspective. I am shy when first meeting people, but when I get to know you and trust you, I will be your best friend for life! Quick moves and lots of activity scare me, so I would probably be best in a home without children. I get along with dogs, and I love my foster K9 siblings. I've become a pretty good snuggler in my foster home too! I'm calm and gentle and a total Prince Charming, just waiting for you! I can't wait to meet my new forever family! Normally I would advise you to never point out a lady's wrinkles, but I think my smooshiness is part of what makes me special! Don't you agree? Let's just call them pleats, shall we? Underneath these precious pleats of mine is the sweetest girl you'll ever find. I love to give kisses, and would be honored to be your leading lady! I once was a shy pup, but I've decided it's much nicer to get lots of cuddles and loving! I've become quite a people person! I also get along well around other dogs. And cats? Who cares! I really don't seem to mind them being around. I'm easy on the leash, and I love to go for walks. I'm ready for a new scene, and a life full of happiness and adventure (and leisure, of course!) PIRATE is me name, and playing is me game. I'm full of fun energy for lots of clownin' around ! I like to amass great troves of loot and booty (toys and sticks). I love the sticks so much, that I'm known around these parts as the Branch Manager (harharhar)!!! Why, sometimes I even commandeer them from the other Old Salts that I bunk with (my foster siblings, that is). Those slowpokes never even know what hit 'em! I do love my playmates though, but don’t ye be telling them. I'm super smart and learn quick. I think I'm advanced for my age because I'm learning from my crew-mates. They keep me shipshape. I'm 5 months old and still growing, with a loads of charm, snap, zap and zip. I'm so darn cute and lovable... be still yer beating heart! Don't ye know? When I'm not playing, I like to follow the landlubbers around. I'm very curious about the world. Cuddles, belly rubs, kisses and Treasure (aka PEANUT BUTTER) are my weakness!! If ye want me to sail with ye....ye best be good at discovering treasure! Blimey!! Almost forgot to mention, I'm blind in my left eye. There's no fixing it, but that doesn't stop me one bit! Posted Breed: Husky / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Hi Guys, Smuggler here! I am named after the breath taking beautiful Smuggler Mountain in Colorado, because my coat is white as snow! I somehow ended up homeless and on the street searching for food. Some people were not very nice to me, so it took a while for me to trust anyone enough to be rescued. But here I am now, living the good life and getting lots of TLC! I have had the works...vaccines, neuter, micro-chip, etc...and am a perfectly healthy pup! I LOVE other dogs and need to be in a home with a k9 sibling to make me feel more comfortable. I am timid with new people, and need someone that will be patient with me while I learn to trust again. It takes more than one meet and greet for me to warm up to new people. Fast moves and loud noises scare me, so I prefer to be in a home with adults, as young children are a bit too much for me. I am crate trained and almost house-trained and also learning my basic commands. I am very gentle and sweet boy and hope to have my forever home soon. Please email adopt@redcollar.org to make me a part of your family! Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Football commentators often discuss the “long road to the Super bowl”. For our Peyton (Manning), the Super bowl was just the start of his journey to a new furever home. Let’s not make his road a long one! Peyton was hit by a car and found injured on the side of the road. On the day of the big game, when he should have been in a warm home watching the action on TV and hoping for snacks, instead he was in a crate at the city animal shelter, unable to even stand. He had some broken bones that would require multiple surgeries. What wasn’t broken was his spirit and charm. Every single person at the shelter fell in love with him, and they named him after the Super bowl hero. They were determined to save him! Red Collar Rescue and Sav-a-Pet stepped in to help Peyton, and he has had his surgery and plenty of needed bed rest. Now that he's recovering, much like his namesake, he’s ready to play for another team (make that family!) Peyton's leg/hip has been repaired several times; however, he does not have full range use of his one leg. He would do best in a home that does not have a lot of stairs. A short step or two is not a problem, but long flights are difficult for him. He is a very gentle guy, who requires very little exercise. He has the sweetest nature. You're gonna want this guy on your team. Contact info@redcollar.org to meet him. Age: 3 yrs Weight: 30 lbs Dogs? ok Kids? ok Cats? unknown Needs foster? yes

As you might expect, I am the (slightly) more adventurous one. We are quite a team of snuggle-buggles. We were both quite shy when we were rescued from the streets, and then were terrified at the pound, finding comfort only in each other. But, Red Collar Rescue came along, and we got a foster mom that loved and loved on us, and now we are coming out of our shells. We live with some other dogs... a group of pups affectionately known as "the littles". We love to play with the others, but mostly we love to snuggle and be near our person. We are a bonded pair, so we should go to our forever home together. You know what they say; two is better than one! We keep each other company, and you will get twice the love!
