Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Dixie is a 2 yo female, yellow Lab mix, approx. 50 lbs. UTD on shots. She gets along with other pets (dogs) and people, with a small period of adjustment to her new surroundings. Dixie was ignored before rescue, so she craves interaction/play. Dixie will give you signs when she needs to go out, but, if you ignore her, she will have an accident. We are working on commands, crate training with great progress. . She is smart and affectionate. She is the most loving dog, and will come up to where you are sitting and put her head in your lap. Dixie would fit well in a family with older children and room to run.

More About Labrador Retriever Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Then they told me I was heart worm positive. My original owner never gave me heart worm pills. Then my guarding Angel Cody's got me out and told me they would get me healthy. I was given heartworm treatments {they hurt} and now I am on my way to being healthy. I am only 2 years old but, have been thru a lot. I am a happy little girl fully vetted and enjoy my foster dogs. House and crate trained, my favorite place is in my foster Dads lap getting a belly rub . Very good on walks ,smart and very, very loveable.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Lenny- he’s about 8 yrs old, fully vetted and weighs 45-50 lbs. We aren’t sure of his breed but we think he’s a pit/boxer mix. Lenny loves his people. He has made friends with the dogs in his foster pack but can be dog selective.. Don’t let Lenny’s age fool you- he’s an active guy! He loves to run and can clock an 8.5 min mile. Lenny would be perfect for an ultramarathoner or someone with some land. He is a free spirit and would need a home with a secure area with supervised outdoor time though because Lenny loves to explore. Lenny participated in a month long board and train program were he learned good manners and basic commands. He is house trained and potty trained. Lenny deserves a home of his own that can give him plenty of exercise and love. How about a meet and greet with Lenny and then a 10 day trial? Please complete the application towww.codysfriendsrescue.com and we will set it up. We do home checks and have a 10 day in-home trial period before finalizing the adoption. Posted Breed: Retriever / Red Heeler / Mixed. Miss Bonnie was rescued from a local shelter on her last few hours. The volunteers fell in love with her. She still has a lot of 'puppy traits', very playful, and somewhat clumsy when chasing a ball. And she loves playing. She gets along very well with other dogs, She learns things very quickly so is very smart..She picked up the doggy door right away and has not had one accident in the house. She also really enjoys attention. She will roll on her back, into the submissive pose to have her tummy rubbed, and will stay there until your arm falls off. Because she is still more or less a puppy, her 'love bites' could be a bit much for small children.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Meet Hope! This girl has had a rough life but is ready for a forever home all her own! She was found abandoned, emaciated and desperately in need of care earlier this year along with two other pit bulls. Luckily, the other dogs were microchipped and were able to find their way home to their owners. Cody’s Friends Rescue stepped into give Hope the recovery time and medical care she needed. After several months of recuperation from some nasty wounds and a skin infection and lots of good food, Hope is happy and healthy and looking for the special family she can call all her own! Hope, who we believe was used as a breeding dog, is approximately, 4-5 years old, crate trained and is impeccable with her house manners, never once having an accident in her foster house. She is a giant cuddle-bug! She is happiest snuggling with her special people, romping in the backyard or playing fetch with a tennis ball. Hope is great with kids and happy to snuggle with them too. She is gentle with her human interactions despite her size and only barks infrequently. We can’t say enough good things about Hope (and we love the fact that one ear stands straight while the other flops!) Because of her prior situation without food, she can be protective of her food as to other dogs and separate feeding is recommended including for a period of time after meal time is over. She has not shown any possessiveness in connection with food and humans, only other dogs. She does best with dogs her own size or bigger and no cats please.
