More About Labrador Retriever Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Lewistown, PA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hey you... My name is Zane. I am 3 years old. I am a chocolate lab/dachshund mix. I am good with dogs, cats and livestock. I lives with 3 other dogs, and 2 cats. I also interacts daily with horses, sheep & chickens. But... I am not good with small children. My family has a one and are having another. They do not want to let me go, but feel that it is what would make me happier. I easily get overwhelmed with kids. I am shy at first, I do bark.I am crate trained and will walk on a leash, but leashes make me nervous too. I am a typical doxie and will bark at strangers, strange noises, doorbells etc. I sleeps in my moms bed at night, love to play ball, chew on bones, and snuggle. The ideal home for me would be a quieter home with no children, or older, less rambunctious kids (10+), a fenced in yard, soft bed, and lots of toys! If this sounds like you... please put in an application on ODAAT's website www.onedogatatime.us. Thanks folks!

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie / Mixed (long coat). Hi! I'm Second short for Second Chance. That's my new name to go with my new life!!! My old name is Rocky. I was tied outside to a box for my whole life. People wanted to rescue me (and fed me) for the past two years and my former owner wouldn't give me up. They had a house fire in Oct. and they left..but they left me there tied to my box in yard. My New Mom named me "Second Chance". I get to live inside now!!! I'm doing really well inside despite the fact that I'm blind. I am mostly housebroken. I like the other dogs in my house, but they don't know I can't see. I get scared when they bump into me, and sometimes snap (hollar) at them. There are kitties in my new house too...I don't mind them at all..they are afraid of me..I think, and I can't see them. I get to go to the Vet on December 19th for "spay". I don't know what that is, but my foster Mom says I'll be ready for my furever family after I see the Vet again. I would love to get a home of my very own for Chrismas!!! I like a house that is simple, and doesn't change the furniture around much. I love attention!!! I would like to have a person all for myself! I don't need a big yard or a fence just someone who will love me, and show me around. To read more of my story check out what I wrote (with Mom's help) on my Mom's facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/notes/pamela-j-klinger/second-chance/1281719531849717

      Breed: Shih Tzu

      Location: Lewistown, PA
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Lotti and Lola were surrendered to a shelter when their elderly owner passed away. The shelter has very few volunteers. These girls lived behind the counter. Someone touched base with us and asked we could help get them into a home. We reached out to the shelter staff and they agreed!! These girls have been together for 13 years! They will need a committed owner who will give them love and attention. They are pretty easy keepers... they sleep alot. ;) But when they are awake... they LOVE to be held and snuggled. If interested in giving this bonded pair a forever family, please put in an application thru our website www.onedogatatime.us.

They were left with no shelter. Thankfully a neighbor fed and watered them and eventually, reached out for help. He is safe and in need of a committed forever family. He is good with dogs and kids. Unsure of cats. Applications for adopting are on our website www.onedogatatime.us. Dubois PA

She is house broken, very cuddly and such a sweet girl. Please submit an application thru our website if you are interested in loving her forever. www.onedogatatime.us
