Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Jewel was pulled out of a very neglectful home with 9 other dogs. She was bottom of the pack and was a very emaciated, heavy heartworm positive little lady when we found her. Jewel has been in our rescue for around 5 years now and we would be thrilled for her to finally have a forever family. She is around 8-1/2 years old and her personality has really bloomed while with us. She is a sweet and loving girl who loves a good walk or swim but is very laid-back and easy to care for. She can be slow to warm up to strangers and an experienced adopter would be best for her because of that. She has been working with our trainer on basic commands and manners for the past several months and is doing amazing. **Operation Education does not adopt out outside pets.**

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Rottweiler-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Baby
      Location: Christiana, TN
Posted Breed: Rottweiler / Mixed (short coat). Idina came to OpEd when she was on death's doorstep, literally. Not only was she at a high kill shelter, she was also suffering from parvo. With the help of our wonderful vet, we were able to treat her. Idina had had little-to-no previous human interaction or what she had had was very traumatic, as she's extremely skiddish and afraid of people. As of now, she's not adoptable due to this fear but we're hoping in time of being with our group, that she will come to see there's love in the world. Idina will make someone an amazing dog, but they will need understanding of her past and what it will take to make her a "loving FURever dog". Idina is roughly 1 year old.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Christiana, TN
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Naveena is around two years old and has already had an incredibly difficult life. Even with that, she is one of the best tempered and well-behaved dogs we have ever taken into our rescue. As of now, Naveena is not ready to be adopted but we would love to find her a great foster home until she is. She needs a foster who doesn't mind giving her her medicated baths and her skin treatments. Naveena was infested with fleas so badly for so long that she had an extreme allergic reaction to them and is currently missing most of her hair. If you think you could help by fostering this sweet girl, please email opedanimalrescue@gmail.com for a foster app! Naveena is part of our Training for Forever program. We require all adopters to complete a basic training course with their new family member. If adopted in the Murfreesboro area, her training can be completed through Wag It Better and the cost of the course will be covered by her adoption fee. **OpEd does not adopt out outdoor pets**

      Location: Christiana, TN
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Lua is a 3 year old Shepherd Mix who came into our rescue as a baby. Her perfect home would be low key, with no small children, and one where she would be the only pet. She has all of the home perks an adopter could want - she's house trained, crate trained, and has been through training with our group so she has manners. Lua would make an exceptional pet for a family who likes to spend their home time hanging out or cuddled up together. Lua is part of our Training 4 Furever program. We require all adopters to complete a basic training course with their new family member. Her training can be completed through Wag It Better at no cost to the adopter. **Local adopter preferred** **OpEd does not adopt out outdoor pets**

Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Cadiva is a 1 year old hound mix who is quite the smart girl! Her favorite way to show how smart she is is to display her amazing skills at escaping. Cadiva will require a secure, fenced-in yard or a committed leash walker at her new home to make sure this fun girl doesn't roam from home. She loves children and would make a great playmate for a family with young kids. She also does well with dogs but we think a home without cats would be best.
