Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). **Tina will be available for adoption at Rosedale Mills, Pennington, NJ, over the Oct 13-15 weekend.** Tina is one of our very special rescues, having been with us for basically all of her life after coming to us as a puppy in 2013. While we've had her for adoption since and even at some of our events, Tina just doesn't "show well" which has led to her being with us for so long. But that doesn't mean that she isn't a simply wonderful girl and well deserving of her own home. Tina was brought to us as a puppy of only about 3 months of age. When her former owner asked if we could take her and her brother, Tuck, into our rescue, we had to ask him to bring them back in a couple of days so that we could prepared a kennel for them. Altho the man agreed, he simply left our rescue and then abandoned both pups into the yard of a lady, who witnessed his actions, and drove away. The following day, the woman brought both pups to us and told us what this man had done. Tina has grown into a very loving and devoted dog to those she knows. She will bark defensively at strangers but after she gets to know someone, she is very affectionate towards them. You have to realize that Tina's "home" has been our rescue and she acts with us as she would if she'd been in a home for these past few years. But we're confident that if just the right person comes along, someone willing to be a little patient with her, then they'll be gaining a wonderful and devoted companion. Over the years Tina has been kept up to date on all of her yearly vaccinations, wormings and monthly preventatives, which has also led her to being heart worm negative. She's definitely a healthy girl who could even stand to loose a few pounds! Of course she'll need some training to become fully acclimated to living in a home but we'd expect that she'd pick up on those qualities rather quickly. If another dog is to be included in the home, a meet and greet would be required prior to the adoption. We don't know how she'll be with cats as she's never been around them. If you can find it in your heart to give this very special girl the opportunity that she deserves, then please submit an application at socorescue.com

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Beau

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Beau came to SoCo after being found abandoned at a construction work site. He was frail, malnourished and limping badly on one of his rear legs. Despite his obvious neglect and need for help, Beau was friendly and welcomed our assistance. Since being at SoCo Rescue, Beau has received all of his basic vet care, which includes being neutered. An examination and x-rays revealed that Beau had been shot and his backside and rear leg still have the tiny BB type balls in them, causing his limp. There's really no way to removed the tiny "bird-shot" pellets and Beau will have to live with the results of someone's cruelty shown towards him. He also tested positive for heart worms but our vet thinks his level of infection is considered "low". Beau has been under the "Slow-Kill" method of treating heart worms. Beau is estimated at being 1 1/2 to 2 years old. He is very people friendly and simply loves human interaction. Because of his size and level of energy, we'd recommend a home without small children. Beau has been selective with which dogs he is friendly with and we're not sure how he'll be around cats. To apply for Beau's adoption please submit an application at www.socorescue.com.

      Louise

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Louise had been living as a stray and kept hanging out at a home within our area. She apparently became pregnant by the German Shepherd that lived at that house and when it came time to deliver her pups, the owners contacted us and said "she has to go!" When we arrived to pick Louise and her pups up, we had to removed deck boards to get her and her pups from under their deck. Since that time, Louise's pups have all found homes and now it's time to find Louise a home of her own. Louise is a very friendly dog, even getting along great with other dog. She's very gentle and submissive around people but seems to thrive on giving attention to those she meets. Her behavior, at times, seems to indicate that she was once abused or has experienced so much neglect as she will simply coward down at your feet. Regardless, Louise is a super-sweet and gentle dog that she will melt your heart. We've estimated Louise to be between 2-3 years old. She's now been spayed and had all of her vaccinations renewed. On Louise's last vet visit unfortunately she tested positive for heart worms. She is being treated with the Slow-Kill method and has shown no signs of negative effects from the heart worms. She has been cat tested and she passed with flying colors. She would thrive in a low commotion home where she is given love and affection. If interested in this sweet girl please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.

      Breed: Australian Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Chloe was surrendered to SoCo because she had some aggression issues. Once she gets to know you Chloe is a very sweet and loving girl. She spent a great amount of time working through her aggression issues and has had remarkable progress. She still likes to teeth play sometimes but it's only playing. She can be choosy on who she picks as doggie friends. A prior meeting of dogs (if potential adopter has a dog) is necessary prior to adoption. Chole would be a great asset to someone who can take the time and gain her trust. As of 10/10/16 it's estimated Chloe is 3 years old. She is current on all her vaccinations and she is spayed. Chloe is a bright girl but may need a refresher course in house breaking. If interested in this beautiful girl please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.

      Breed: Bulldog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Brandy was found completely emaciated showing every bone she had. She was dirty and in some desperate need for some TLC. After a few weeks of food and care Brandy became very grateful. She is one of the sweetest girls ever. It might take some time when meeting new people to come around but when she does she's extremely loving. While Brandy has associated with a few other dogs, she is typically very dog aggressive and should be kept as an only dog unless professional training corrects this trait. Brandy has lots of love to give and would make a great addition to any home without pets/small children. As of 10/10/16 it's estimated Brandy is 5 years old. Her heart worm status is yet to be known as she hasn't been vetted yet. Brandy is house trained but may need a refresher course once in her new environment. If interested in beautiful Brandy please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.

      Breed: Bulldog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Salty came to SoCo with one of the worst cases of both sarcoptic and demodex mange we've ever seen. After proper care and treatment it was determined that Salty would never grow a full coat of fur back. Salty needs proper care with baths and mange treatment during outbreaks. Salty is a sweet old boy who loves people. He can sometimes be selective on who he chooses as doggie friends and would be great as an only dog in a home. As of 10/10/16 it's estimated Salty is 9 years old. He is neutered, fully vetted and heart worm free. Salty is suffering with vision impairment and some hearing loss. If you have room in your heart and home for this terrific boy please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.

      Kit

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Kit came to SoCo after she was found tethered to a chain in the hot sun. She along with 14 other dogs were all living in the same conditions. They had only a dog house to protect them from the elements. The woman who was caring for these dogs tried her best but was unable to care for them as they needed to be. Kit loves to run around and really enjoys her play time. She's a young girl that still has lots of puppy energy to expend. She will need a family that can give her proper exercise needs. Kit gets along well with other dogs and people alike. On Kit's recent vet visit she tested positive for heart worms. We are treating her with the slow-kill method in which the existing heart worms die off and no new ones form. It's a lesser evasive way than other methods used. Once adopted, Kit will need to be kept on a monthly preventative. Other than her heart worm status, Kit seems to be in good health otherwise. She is current on all her vaccinations- DHLPP, Rabies & Bordetella, and she is spayed. If interested in this fun loving girl please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.
