Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Tuck was surrendered along with his sister Tina as pups when the owner didn’t want them anymore. The owner came by the rescue and was told we were full at the time and to check back at the end of the week. That same day the owner took it upon himself to drop off the pups down the street from the rescue in some random yard. The woman’s house that he dropped them off at came to us and we managed to find room for the pups, not knowing what would happen to them if we didn’t. Tuck was bathed, fed and treated for fleas. Both Tuck and his sister grew into sweet loving dogs and enjoy playing with toys as well as each other. Tuck has an exuberant personality that shines when meeting new people. He is a very handsome boy and would be a wonderful companion for a family with older children as sometimes his play style could overwhelm a small child. Tuck is a Labrador Retriever mix and is about 2½ years old. He is current on all his vaccinations and he is neutered. He is a large dog and he will need to be exercised daily. Though he is quick to learn, Tuck will need to be house trained, and he will need some additional leash training once in his new environment. If you have room in both your heart and your home to give Tuck the attention and love he deserves, please submit an application at www.socorescue.com.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Homer

      rescue
      Breed: Chiweenie
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Glenwood, GA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Homer's former owner was caught living illegally at a camp site. When told to move, the person simply left Homer and another dog behind. Homer is a very people friendly dog and has a lot of energy. While he can be playful with other dogs, the introduction to other dogs needs to be done with patience. Homer loves to play fetch and loves affection. He would do best in a home without small children due to his high energy level. Homer did test positive for heart worms on 5/20/16 and our vet thought that his level of infection was "light", meaning that Homer could be kept on the "Slow Kill" method of treating heart worms. This method consist of keeping him on a monthly preventative and having him retested every 6 months. Homer does seem to be in relatively good health otherwise. He is current on all his vaccinations and has been neutered. Once in his new environment Homer will need a refresher course in house breaking. If interested in this wonderful little guy please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Glenwood, GA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). ** Jack is being fostered by a wonderful family, they are working on some of his trust issues. He is a little shy at first but comes around quickly. He loves other dogs and would make a great companion.** Jack and his three siblings were found abandoned by a vet tech. They were all going to be euthanized that day if SoCo didn't take them in. They were not socialized and fearful of everything around them. We brought them to our rescue and all started to come around very slowly. They get along very well with one another and love to play. They are smart babies and caught on to routine pretty quickly. Jack is still somewhat on the shy side but a very sweet boy when he gets used to you. As of 8/516 it's estimated Jack is approx 6 months old. Besides being neutered he is current on all his first year vaccinations- his series of 3 first year "puppy" vaccines that help protect him from parvo and other harmful and deadly viruses; rabies & bordetella. and have received his de-wormers and parasite prevention treatments. If you can offer a loving home to Jack please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.

      Location: Glenwood, GA
Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Mixed (short coat). Mindy came to us from horrid conditions not suitable for a human to live in let alone a dog. She was living outside in a deplorable, filthy yard. When SoCo received the call to go out to the house we found her wandering around the yard aimlessly looking for food but mostly just finding garbage. We knew she couldn't stay there and we didn't have room at the rescue at the time to get her in. But SoCo vowed to get her out of there as soon as possible. Within a few week's time we got Mindy out of there and gave her a safe place to live. Mindy is just adorable to look at and she is a smart girl. She caught onto the routine of the rescue rather quickly. She has a laid back demeanor and she is very loving. Mindy gets along well with both people and other dogs and she would make a great addition to a loving family. On a recent vet visit Mindy was diagnosed with heart worms. We are treating her with the slow-kill method in which the existing heart worms die off in time and no new heart worms are formed. The slow-kill method is a lesser evasive treatment than other methods used. Once adopted, Mindy will need to be kept on a monthly heart worm preventative. Other than her heart worm status Mindy seems to be in good health. She is current on all her vaccinations and she is spayed. Though Mindy is a bright girl she will need some house training as she's never lived in a home before. If interested in this sweet girl, please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Kit came to SoCo after she was found tethered to a chain in the hot sun. She along with 14 other dogs were all living in the same conditions. They had only a dog house to protect them from the elements. The woman who was caring for these dogs tried her best but was unable to care for them as they needed to be. Kit loves to run around and really enjoys her play time. She's a young girl that still has lots of puppy energy to expend. She will need a family that can give her proper exercise needs. Kit gets along well with other dogs and people alike. On Kit's recent vet visit she tested positive for heart worms. We are treating her with the slow-kill method in which the existing heart worms die off and no new ones form. It's a lesser evasive way than other methods used. Once adopted, Kit will need to be kept on a monthly preventative. Other than her heart worm status, Kit seems to be in good health otherwise. She is current on all her vaccinations- DHLPP, Rabies & Bordetella, and she is spayed. If interested in this fun loving girl please submit an application to www.socorescue.com.
