Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Furry Kids' Refuge is in need of good quality dog and puppy food with meat as the first ingredient. You can drop off donations at our weekly adoption events at the Lee's Summit Petco (1860 NW Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, MO), Saturdays only from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. Approx. DOB: 6/4/2011 Approx. Weight: 83 lbs. $150 adoption fee includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness! Spyder will require a fully fenced in yard! Spyder was adopted from Furry Kids when he was a puppy and recently returned when his family couldn't care for him anymore. Spyder is a HUGE love bug!! He loves people and other dogs! As for cats, he does fine with them too! Spyder is HOUSEBROKE........BONUS !!!! Spyder is just a big lump of goofy mixed with sweetness who wants to please everyone. He loves to go on walks and car rides. He would be a great dog to take to the dog park because he loves all dogs. Spyder does well in the kennel. He can whine a little at first but he does settle down. However, he is a bit of a Houdini in the kennel. He finds ways to get out of them so you'll want to zip tie it all closed. As you can see in one of his pictures, Spyder is wearing a graduating cap. He and his foster mom went through a basic dog obedience class and he graduated with flying colors! He knows commands such as sit, down, stay, heel, wait, come, and a few more! UPDATE: Spyder has now also graduated from Advanced Obedience Class! He's got 2 degrees now! :) Spyder needs a family that will love him and be patient with him and understand he just wants to be with his humans. Cuddling on the couch with you is his favorite thing to do! Just give him a chance! You won't be sorry you did. He truly is a wonderful boy! Spyder recently had bloodwork drawn and it was determined that he has a low thyroid. This is a common thing and is easily cared for by a daily thyroid supplement pill. No big deal and the medicine costs around $20 for a 3 month supply. Spyder has been neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative, wormed and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Spyder, please complete the adoption application located at www.furrykidsrefuge.org/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will get back to you as soon as possible. Would you like to foster a Furry Kid? Furry Kids' Refuge will supply the food & vet care while you supply the basic house rules & love.......win-win for all!! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Approx DOB: 9/2008 Approx Weight: 50 lbs. $100 adoption fee also includes a 2 week trial to help ensure everyone's happiness. Handsome Homer is male Aussie/Lab mix who came to Furry Kids' Refuge when his time had run out at a local kill shelter. He is so handsome in person with his shiny, soft, black coat with the white speckled markings that make us think he has Aussie in him. The body shape reminds us of a Lab mix. Two very wonderful breeds that are very smart and loyal. Homer can be a bit timid when first meeting new people but he warms up quickly with a caring voice and loving touch. Once you win him over he is your best buddy! He would be fine with older children over the age of 12 year only because the younger ones are louder and usually more active. Homer loves tennis balls and loves to run...he would make a great walking or jogging partner! ! He has a lot of energy at his age but is also very settled and laid back. Homer is great in the house, very well behaved. Homer is looking for a family that is wanting a furry kid that is loving and playful but also knows how to chill out with the family. He is very good with female dogs but he is not always comfortable with other male dogs. He tends to act dominant unless the other male is very easy going. We can introduce your dog to Homer in a neutral setting if you are interested. Homer has been neutered, heart worm tested negative, vaccinated, micro chipped. I'M PART OF A SPECIAL ADOPTION PROMOTION SO MY ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $100 $150 adoption fee includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness! ~~~~~~~~~ Children can be stressful for KC so they must be at least 10 years old or older ~~~~~~~~~~ KC was surrendered to Furry Kids' when his owner had to move into an assisted living facility and could not take his dogs with him. KC does not like being in a crate/kennel. KC came from a home with another little dog, but while in a foster home for Furry Kids, displayed some aggression towards an older dog in the home over the food bowl, so he would definitely need to meet any dogs he might be living with to be sure they get along. Children can also be stressful to KC, so he should not go to a home with small children (under 10). KC is so loving & sweet and would make a great companion to some lucky family. He would be a great walking buddy or jogging partner. KC is housebroke....BONUS !!! Just give this sweet boy a chance. KC doesn't show well at pet adoptions because of being in the crate and having the other dogs walking by his, so we will have to meet away from Saturday pet adoptions to show you his true, sweet self. KC has been neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative and microchipped. I'M PART OF A SPECIAL ADOPTION PROMOTION SO MY ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $100 $150 adoption fee also includes a 2 week trial to help ensure everyone's happiness. Hi! I'm Chuck! I'm a Lab mix kind of guy who still has lots of "play" left in me! Furry Kids rescued me when I was a puppy and I was adopted but brought back after a couple of years because I chased the horses and cats!! I don't get it, what's the big deal?? I'm a dog! I chase things! Anyway, Furry Kids loves me just the way I am and they are going to take care of me until I can find a new home. I get along well with other dogs , especially the females and I like kids, too! So, there's gotta be a good home out there for me, don't you think?? Chuck can go over a 4 foot chain link fence. He will need a taller chain link fence or a wooden/privacy fence to keep him safe. Chuck has been neutered, heart worm tested negative, vaccinated, and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Chuck, please complete the adoption application located at www.furrykidsrefuge.org/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will get back to you as soon as possible. I'M PART OF A SPECIAL ADOPTION PROMOTION SO MY ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $100 Adoption Fee: $150 includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness! Nina is a very nice girl in need of a family to love her! Her mother was full bred Rottweiler and we think her dad was a Shar Pei mix. She is 55 pounds of pure love! She is intelligent and loves people of all ages! Nina can be very dominant with other dogs and doesn't do well with other femlaes so she would do best as a only dog or with a male dog that can hold their own when playing with her.....she plays rough ! She is housetrained and is very well behaved in the house. She does have a lot of energy so she needs a family who will exercise her and give her a lot of play time! She would make a all around GREAT family dog since she is used to being with her family. She is being displaced because her family is having to move to an apartment. She has a very beautiful, uniquely colored coat! Nina is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, heart worm tested negative and on preventatives, micro chipped. If you are interested in giving Nina a great home, please fill out the application from our website at www.furrykidsrefuge.org, click on "Adopt A Dog".
