Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Let's start an adventure together! Meet Pete #A324817, we call him Petey. He’s a 15 months old male Labrador blend with short black hair and a few white markings. Petey currently weight 60lbs and is ready to find his forever home. Petey loves to play with his four-legged brothers and sisters and therefore Petey really needs to find a forever home that has another brother and/or sister. He’s a handsome boy, smart and learns quickly. He spends his day playing, taking naps and enjoying his toys….squeaky ones are his favorite but he’s not picky. Petey has a bit of anxiety with meeting new people, new things and surroundings, but after sometime he does warm up. He’ll need a family who is willing to continue to work with him on this. Petey is crate trained, house trained (we have a doggie door) and he’s working on walking calmly on a leash. He knows the commands sit, down, off, wait, kennel up and is working on here. He does well with meeting new dogs and when out on walks doesn’t show any interest in cats. We don’t have children or cats in our home. Petey would make the perfect addition to your home and he loves to show his love for you with kisses and his great smile. Pete is neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting, please email adopt@sanantoniopetsalive.org with Pet name and ID#. Please allow us up to 24 hours to respond as all fosters work with us on a volunteer basis. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

We are still getting to know Vine, but she is a very friendly girl and is good around the kids, cats and dogs. She walks well on a leash and likes to go on walks, and rides well in the car. She has a beautiful brindle coat and weighs about 31lbs. She was an outside dog and is working on her potty training and indoor manners. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Looking for a forever home Hello…My name is Millie (street name Victoria) and unfortunately I have had a rough 1 year of life. Luckily my foster mom saved me from the kennels and possible euthanization looking past my inabilities to trust humans. My foster mom believes I have been mistreated and understands my need to learn to trust again. We have been together for 6 months and life is good my friends. I play, kiss and even snuggling now. :-) I'm 15lbs and a lot of fun! I LOVE my human toddler foster sister. I'm enjoying sitting on couch and doing things I did not have before I saved. Thank you for considering my profile. Call my foster mom....she will tell you some really cool things about me! Sincerely, Millie All of the animals listed by San Antonio Pets Alive! were rescued from euthanasia in San Antonio, Texas. She gives the best hugs putting her paws around your waist and pressing her face against your tummy and she also loves to dance (the Tango is her favorite!). Abby is in a foster home with dogs of all sizes, cats, and kids and is good with all of them although she can get a little rambunctious. She does exhibit the usual teenage antics at times, but is housebroken. Posted Breed: Retriever (short coat). Milkdud is a 7 month old terrier mix. She's spayed and chipped. She's up to date on shots and preventatives. She weighs about 25 pounds and probably won't get much bigger. Milkdud was very dependent on her brothers that were adopted before her. Now she's pretty shy and timid around new people and situations. Once she warms up she's a very friendly, affectionate and playful puppy. She loves her toys, the water and playing with the other dogs in the house. She's crate and paper trained. She's working on her housebreaking. She will sometimes run into a corner or under a table/bed if she's scared. She will fear snap if you try to touch/pick her up when she's cornered herself. You have to let Milkdud come to you. She's easily redirected with treats. She's learning basic commands like sit and down. She loves to sleep with her doggy siblings or snuggled with her person. She likes playing in her pool. She's pretty good on a lead. She hasn't been around cats or small children. She should go to a home with older kids that won't try to pick her up when she's scared.

I've been with my foster mommy since I was 2 mos old healing from some non-contagious mange. I'm a very handsome guy, who my foster mommy says I'm a biggest sweet heart ever! I love to play with my foster family (dogs & cats) here. I love fun times! I'm a people kind of guy, and so many of them fall in love with me right away. I'm pretty darn good on a leash, and am perfecting my house-potty training thing. I'm still young, so I still need to do some learning, but this Love stuff, I got that down really good! 100% Love Bug I was scheduled to be euthanized, but San Antonio Pets Alive! saved me and now they are helping me find the forever, loving home that I have never known.
