Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please meet Marsha, or as I call her “Mama”. I think she is a lab mix approximately 2 years old. She came to me straight off the euthanasia list on June 4th. She was so frail (skin & bones) and scared all alone in her kennel, covered in fleas. I brought her into my home that evening and let her rest all night. She looked so exhausted that she didn’t want to walk out to the grass for her potty break or lift her head to eat. I truly was worried about her.Within the next few days, she began eating a little more and more. I began mixing in raw eggs and vitamins in her food and before I knew it, she had started to gain some weight. I began to see her personality start to shine through. It’s now been nearly three weeks. She has a small limp from a previous injury (it’s possible she may have been run over at one time), but it does not stop her from playing around with my other dogs. Her upper body is getting stronger every day and she is not the weak, wobbly and timid pup I first met.I’ve learned that she is very bright too! She can use the doggy door, plays nice, no potty accidents, will sit for treats & give her paw. She just wants to find someone she can trust and who will love her for the rest of her puppy life. Marsha can be left outside, but she really does prefer to hang out in her kennel during the day. When supervised, we like to have her roaming around with the rest of us, although she really just prefers to hang out in her doggy bed and look cute. Now that Marsha is getting her strength back, we encourage an adopter who is willing to help her release some of the energy she is starting to get back. She enjoys playing fetch and playfully rolling around with our other dogs. She is so grateful at a second chance in life and shows it every day by smothering us with kisses all day long if we let her. She was scheduled to be euthanized, but San Antonio Pets Alive! saved her and now they are helping her find the forever, loving home that she has never known. She is currently located at San Antonio Pets Alive!, and is in a foster home. By adopting her, you not only give her a new leash on life; you also save the life of the additional dog who can be rescued from euthanasia and placed in foster care. If you are interested in adopting Marsha, please email adopt@sanantoniopetsalive.org with Pet name and ID#. Please allow us up to 24 hours to respond as all fosters work with us on a volunteer basis. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Looking for a forever home Hello…My name is Millie (street name Victoria) and unfortunately I have had a rough 1 year of life. Luckily my foster mom saved me from the kennels and possible euthanization looking past my inabilities to trust humans. My foster mom believes I have been mistreated and understands my need to learn to trust again. We have been together for 6 months and life is good my friends. I play, kiss and even snuggling now. :-) I'm 15lbs and a lot of fun! I LOVE my human toddler foster sister. I'm enjoying sitting on couch and doing things I did not have before I saved. Thank you for considering my profile. Call my foster mom....she will tell you some really cool things about me! Sincerely, Millie All of the animals listed by San Antonio Pets Alive! were rescued from euthanasia in San Antonio, Texas.
