Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Sonic is approx. 18months old and 80-90#. He is very playful and sweet. He does not realize that he is a large puppy! He loves to play in water, sit in your lap, and gives hugs. I feel I have given Sonic a bad wrap as I have listed him as being best as an only dog. I have placed him with two other foster dogs and he has done great! He just likes to play really rough. The other dogs have turned around and given it right back to him and he takes every thing in stride with no aggression. I have attached a playful pic of him and his current running buddy, Omni. His adoption is $150 to help with cost of current medical of vacs., neuter, microchip, deworming, and flea meds. Email adoptawag@aol.com for application.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Pops

      Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: Tuttle, OK
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Pops was taken into a local shelter as a stray along with a female dog that seemed to be his companion. We think he resembles a Treeing Walker Coonhound but we really do not know what his mix is other than a hound dog. He and his companion appeared to act like house dogs so we are listing him as housetrained, however, we do not have him in a home where this can be evaluated. We think he is around 8 years old so middle aged but not quite a senior yet. Very sweet disposition. He seems to like other dogs but he will crawl onto their backs to play etc so needs to be a dog that is close to the same size as him and easy going. He has been neutered, dewormed, and vacs. His adoption is $125 to help offset cost of medical. Email pbroklahoma.com for an application for this big boy!

      Huey

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Tuttle, OK
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Huey was an owner surrender. He was kept in the house so we are assuming that he may be house trained, however, where he is staying he cannot be evaluated in this area. He is a typical little chihua boy that likes to bark at the strangers. But he will welcome a sniff to a human's hand and a pat on the head and he will be on his way! He was living with other dogs so we think he would acclimate to new roommates. It is unknown if he has been around small children. His vet work is scheduled and will include vacs, deworming, microchipping, and neuter. His adoption is $150 to help offset the cost of his medical. You can fill out an application for Huey at pbroklahoma.com

      rescue
      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Tuttle, OK
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). These two precious babies were literally dumped down the road from the rescue. They were so scared we had to set up a trap to catch them. Once caught they were all wiggles wanting some attention. Snickers is the brown male and Doodle is the tri colored female. They look like dapple dachshunds except they are about 15-20#. We listed them as 9 months old. They both want so much love from humans. Surprising considering a human let them down. Their adoption is $200 for each. They have had 2 boosters, rabies, dewormed, heartworm checked, microchipped, and neutered/spayed. You can find an application for them at pbroklahoma.com
