Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Rottweiler / Mixed (short coat). Sam may be a Lab/Rottweiler mix. He's approximately 3 years 7 months old and weighs 64 lbs. He loves to run and play and is very smart! He knows the commands sit, stay, down and come. He's very affectionate and is always happy to see you. After a joyful greeting, he settles down and loves to snuggle. He has an "adoring" personality and once he gets to know you, he will be very attached to you. He will lay his head on your knee, stare lovingly with his big brown eyes and "adore" you. Sam also enjoys tumbling about with his sister, Rosie, and the rest of our pack. Sam is learning to walk on a leash, is crate-trained and is housebroken. I didn't have to teach him at all. He came to me ready to do his business outside! He has not been around cats, so I don't know how he would do with them. Since he's a strong boy, he would probably do better with older children. However, he is very loving with my 4 & 6 year old grandchildren. He's always trying to give them kisses. Sam is friendly and playful with the other dogs in our pack, however he does not like strange dogs to charge him. With proper introduction, he will become comfortable with another dog and soon they will be playmates. Sam has accepted new foster dogs that come to our home with no problem after a proper slow and careful introduction. He is shy with new people and in new situations and does need a bit of socialization with the outside world. We are working on that. He needs time to be at ease with people who are new to him and in new situations. He will bark at newcomers and be aloof initially, but will warm up. Sam has been trained not to sit on sofas or beds, or to jump up on counters in case new owners would prefer the same. However, I'm sure he wouldn't mind learning how to be a couch potato or snuggling up with you! Sam will need someone who is patient and experienced with dogs that are a bit shy. He needs someone who will take him out to explore the world. Sam is a joy, very affectionate with his family and very loyal. He would make a wonderful best buddy! Sam & Rosie are very bonded and I would love for them to find a home together, but it is not a must. The adoption fee includes vet check, vaccinations, Bordetella, de-worming, rabies, spay/neuter and microchip. There is a an additional $12.99 fee for Home Again for a lifetime registration of the microchip. It is against the law in the State of Texas for a rescue not to be sterilized so we have to make sure it gets completed and that we have record of it. NOTE: In our bios, we provide information based on our volunteer's experience with a particular dog; such as temperament, training, and ability to get along with others. AARF is a 501(c)3 Non Profit, all breed, no kill organization. Our group is always in need of donations in order to continue to give the needed medical care to our rescues. Adoption fees do not begin to cover all of the medical costs. Any donation, no matter how small is a big help and is greatly appreciated. Please help us to continue to help them. Thank you.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

We have fell in love with her and would keep her but unfortunately we have our own dogs who has not accepted her into the pack. I promise you, You will fall head over hills in love with her. Maggie was rescued July 4, 2014, scared into a garage by fireworks. She had the look of a girl who had been on her own for a while. Her foster was surprised 17 days later with a litter of 14 puppies! Maggie has turned out to be a pretty mellow girl. She has been attacked by dogs in the past so she can be defensive if she feels threatened by a dog, but otherwise gets along fine with them. She loves to run and play in a big open area or in the back yard she will play with her human other dogs or alone.Maggie also likes her walks she presently walks twice a day.
