Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Rottweiler / Mixed (short coat). "Hello! My name is Shaw. I'm a young mixed boy - I appear to be Rottweiler and Lab. I LOVE attention! I love to be close to my people and I won't hesitate to use my nose forcefully to get your attention. I will also roll all the way on top of you for my favorite thing - belly rubs! I really enjoy stuffed and squeaky toys, but don't be surprised when I tear them up. I must have a yard to chase tennis balls, birds, squirrels, etc and to romp in. I get very excited very easily, but at the end of my days, I love to just snuggle up on the couch." "I'm very motivated by treats and have learned the commands come, sit, all the way down (lying down), and down (get off). I also understand no and will respond to it immediately. I have only had one accident since being in my foster home and will wait by the door when I'm done going potty. I have a foster sister that I get along with well. I am always SO excited when I encounter other dogs and MUST be introduced on a leash. It takes time for me to calm down and play nicely with other dogs. My foster sister is the queen of the house and I respect her boundaries. I do not like when other dogs come near my food or treats, so I must be fed at the same time and away from another dog. I have not been introduced to cats, but I really like to bark at them from the other side of the fence! I am still working on my leash manners and need some work to be an enjoyable walk/run buddy!" "I'm searching for and cannot wait to find my forever home! I am loyal and such a love bug, but I know I will take patience and discipline to make the perfect dog. Adopt me and there will be a tail wagging ALWAYS in your house!"

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Dana

      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Nashville, TN
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed. Dana is a beautiful girl who loves to play with our lab/pit mix female. They wrestle and play tug of war for hours. Dana will come to me when I am seated or if I offer her food when I am standing. She approaches me when I am seated for a quick pet or scratch, but is quick to run if I move too suddenly. You can see the love and trust in her eyes. It is there just waiting to be earned by someone who loves enough to show her patience. She has made so much progress in the past few months. Now instead of having to ask my youngest daughter (gifted with animals) to put Dana in her crate at night, Dana happily responds to "it's night night time" and goes into the crate for the night. The crate is her safe place and if a spot on the sofa isn't open she will stretch out in her crate for a nap. Just a few short months ago she would cry so much that I would often sit with her for hours until she got too sleepy to fuss when I went to bed. She loves to chew and is easily distracted with hooves or antlers. Dana is ready to begin leash training and we have planned to begin after black Friday (three of our family work in retail). I STRONGLY suggest that any potential home have a fenced yard and a family with extra patience. It may take more time but she is definitely going to be a superstar.

I have searched high and low for my family and just haven't found them yet, OR they haven't found me, YET! I am not a pedigree dog with papers. I won’t win an award at the dog shows, but I am 100% winner when it comes to loving and family. At the end of each day, I will greet you with gleaming eyes and a wagging tail, then…I’ll come thump-thump-thumping over to you with a kissey and sit by your side. I will look into your eyes and know exactly what kind of day you have had. We can sit quietly or go out and take a long walk around the neighborhood. I am looking for a place to unpack my traveling' bags and set roots with her family. Yal' come meet me.

      Breed: Chipin
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Nashville, TN
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed. Ginni is one of several little Chihuahuas we are getting from someone who has never had them vetted, has let them live outside, and has done very little to socialize them. When Ginni first came into the rescue, she was very fearful of people, noises, any quick movements and new surroundings. With the help of her fosters she has made significant progress in dealing with these fears. Although still fearful of many things, she has learned to relax when being held, enjoy sitting on laps, and quite playful with people she is familiar with. She is also making progress in her potty training. Once Ginni gets comfortable in a home, her sweet personality comes through. She gets along with cats, likes toys and loves to play with other dogs. Since Ginni is still skittish, she will need a home that has a fenced yard or enclosed patio and no young children. Also, she needs a person who will have the patience to continue working with her in building up her confidence and overcoming her fears and insecurities.

Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Pointer / Mixed. This is precious Sienna!! This Sweet girl has had a hard life. She was pregnant when she became a Proverbs' baby. We got homes for all of her sweet babies, and now we are looking for her forever family to love. Sienna is a real love. She is good with other dogs. Because she was alone for so long, she does have a jealous streak and likes to be the only one getting attention....nothing aggressive, just wanting to catch up on all the love she lost out of on. She loves to play, too. I play a game with her called "get the tail". It goes 100 miles an hour, I try to grab it and hold it. Sometimes I get it and sometimes she tucks it so we can play longer. When Sienna came to us, she was able to climb our chain link fence. So a privacy fence would be best. We also suggest if she were to live with other dogs that she be fed by herself. But once feeding is over, playtime is good to go!! She is housebroken and a lover. We are looking for an exceptional home for this baby.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Black Mouth Cur / Mixed (short coat). This cutie is Addie. She was pulled from a kill shelter when her time was up. Her face, with that furrowed brow, is what drew us to her. She is learning basic obedience. She's less than 3 years old and weighs about 40 lbs. Once she gets comfortable with her new home, snuggling up next to her human will be one of her favorite things. Playing fetch is also another thing she enjoys. She is getting used to being around large dogs, and she is good with cats! She will make a family very happy as she is crate trained, potty trained and the perfect compact size! She would love a family with children, although older children would be ideal because she can play a little rough. We don't really know Addie's breed, but we think she looks like a boxer/beagle/pug, a Buggle!!

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). All the single ladies ~ All the single ladies ... Put a ring on Queen!!! Meet Queen!! I am a true queen. Being the queen and my royal lineage. I want to have my family all to myself. I want to solely be the one for you and you for me. I'm a diva! I like some of my fellow K9's as long as they know I am Queen. Queen is an absolutely gorgeous medium, red-nosed Pitbull Terrier. She came to Proverbs when her Foster Mom alerted us to the fact that she and her 7 puppies were going to be euthanized at a local shelter. Queen has been through a lot in her short life and will require a forever family that will provide her with a nurturing, stable environment. She loves children , and a few other dogs. She is curious about cats, ; there are several in her foster home , and she has never bothered them. Queen is extremely bright, eager to please her people and loves to exercise. She would make an excellent hiking or jogging partner for an active family. She is heartworm negative and has been spayed. Queen prefers ladies, but once she knows the men won't hurt her, she loves them too. We think Queen would be PERFECT for a single lady that has children and wants a dog that will appear to be menacing to strangers. Did we mention she LOVES children? She will alert **Stranger Danger** A fenced yard is required. If you are interested in Queen, please fill out an application. A fenced yard is required. Location: Nashville, TN
Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). This sweet baby was an owner surrender. He is ok with kids, but does not like anyone in his face. If he is unsure of someone (mostly men), he will bark and go for a foot! (Lol) But once he gets used to them he's fine! He likes other dogs. He does have IVDD (Intervertebral Disk Disease), which is very common in this breed. He runs and plays and gets around very well. He loves toys. He sleeps very content and quiet in his kennel. 2/18/2015 Update: Skippy went to see Dr. Brannon and confirms he does have IVDD. Several disks that are degenerated, one that is completely calcified (chronic), and one that is herniated. He does have some incontinence that is a result of the IVDD. He was put on anti-inflammatories and see how he does. If not better we are to report back to Dr. Brannon to discuss options for precious little Skippy. Depite all of this, he gets along fairly well, is very happy, and doesn't mind his doggy diapers!

Due to his size and playfulness it is best he is not in a home with small children. He loves to go on long walks, even jogging. He enjoys running and playing outside with his fur-siblings so a big yard to call his own would be ideal. Oakley is currently in a home with other dogs and gets along well with them but we do not know how it does with cats. He is just a good - fun loving dog that would make a great and loyal companion!
