Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed. Brady is a laid back and easy going fellow with a moderate energy level. He really enjoys meeting new people and gives a great big full-body wag. With other dogs, he likes to be the boss and is more tolerant of female dogs than other males. He is as strong in will as he is in body, so needs someone used to large dogs! He accepts handling and overall is an easy keeper. Est DOB: Sep 2009 http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years of age. "Extra large" is over 25 inches at shoulder. Fenced yard usually required and approved application always required. Visit or email for adoption application. Shelter phone often does not work, please use email link on this listing.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Breed: Mountain Cur-Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Mountain Cur / Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed. Gretal is a marvelous girl! On the short side, she is that perfect pretty gal for someone needing a scaled down dog. She has a humble nature and is very obedient. She does have a bit of energy and is convinced she should be a lap dog. She is good with other dogs in general but not at meal time. Due to being very malnourished in her past, she will try to get every bit of food, even if its not her own. Hey, it wouldn't be fair for her to be totally perfect, would it? Est DOB: Mar 2013 Est weight: 40# (ideally...she's a bit of a chow hound) http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years old. "Medium" is between 13 and 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard usually required and approved application always required. Visit or email for adoption application. Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Pointer Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Pointer / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Peaches is a silly-but-sweet girl. She is active, but can settle well and loves to seek out attention and stay near people. Peaches likes other dogs and gets lonely without a companion, but tends to be over-the-top about it and pushy, so needs properly matched to a dog friend. She has no toy recognition but does perk up to the squeaker. Peaches also requests a dog house at her new home, because she loves to hang out in one! She may not be the best companion for a very small child ONLY because of her energy. She is at the cutoff between medium and large size. She is technically an adult, but we doubt she'll ever really grow up ;) "Adult" is at least 3 years old, but don't tell Peaches. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder, even if just barely. Fenced yard usually required and approved application always required. Visit or email for adoption application. Shelter phone often does not work, please use email link on this listing.

      Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Hound / Mixed. Audrey is a sweet girl on the shy side. She responds beautifully to gentle strokes and kind words and would love a quiet home with someone to build her confidence. She walks fairly well on leash and was a little nervous but curious about the car. She prefers to potty outside so may well be housetrained. She is fine with polite dogs but rambunctious or pushy dogs upset her. A meet-n-greet is needed for any doggie companions in her new home. http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years old. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder. rescue
      Breed: Mastiff-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). At nearly 3ft tall and 66lbs, Kodiak is a bear of a boy. He still has some lessons to learn about his size, but here we are in great luck - he LOVES a tennis ball. Or, specifically, an extra-large Chuck-It ball, tho a Jolly Ball would likely also do. The ball is a great training incentive, and he is also loves to toss and leap on it to entertain himself. Kodiak loves playing with and sweet talking the girl dogs. But like any reasonable bear, he will not share food and loudly defends his bowl. If his house holds more than one dog (and that is hard to imagine!), he will need fed completely apart in his own room with no food/treats left down ever. He will also need to leave the room before you pick up his bowl - this is where that Chuck-It! ball will help you. A qualified trainer can help him realize you are a good person to have near his bowl, because you are the one who makes the food happen. Dog-experienced, adult-only home, please. Est DOB: Aug 2013 Intake Weight: 66lb "Adult" is at least 3 years old. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard and approved application required. Visit or email for application. Posted Breed: Corgi / Hound / Mixed. Sally is a humble, sweet little thing. It is hard in photos to show just how short she is! She walks well on leash, loves attention and grooming and has a mild activity level. She will tolerate other dogs, but doesn't like them in her personal bubble. She ignored the cats completely. This adorable older lady will make a wonderful companion. Please come give her a nice retirement home! [Sally has some age-related stiffness and does not like to be picked up but otherwise loves to be spoiled!] Est DOB: Jan 2006 Intake weight: 28# http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Senior" is at least 7 years old. Breed: Mutt

      Age: Young
      Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed. Lil Bit is a smart little girl! She is going to training class and picking things up very quickly. Her trainer says she has a very sweet temperament and a gentle demeanor, is very intelligent and will make a very loving pet. How can you go wrong with that? Lil Bit does currently think cats are good for chasing (in play), even though the cats disagree. She is being worked with to change her opinion. She was born January 19, 2015 so she's just a baby and much room to learn! Oh, her special need? Like many dogs with too much white on the head/ears, Lil Bit is deaf. We would love to find her an experienced rescue or adopter. But we will also consider a very devoted adopter who will work with her. For a local adopter, she comes with a free 6-week training class at Oxford Exchange PetSmart to help you learn to communicate with each other. (3rd pic is her mom) "Young" is up to 3 years old. "Medium" is 13 to 20 inches at the shoulder or expected to be. Fenced yard usually required and approved application always required. Visit or email for adoption application. Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed. It is hard to believe someone lost this big girl, but its true - she was found roaming. She is just a baby still, very young and silly. If you would love the challenge and reward of training up a young gal to be a model citizen, she is full of opportunity! Though definitely of a mastiff type, she is not as huge as a full mastiff (tho she isn't dainty either - she is 78#). She is very sweet and wants to be a lap dog, so be prepared! She does need plenty of exercise and attention to avoid turning her teeth toward destructive enterprises. Also, being big and clumsy, she would be a poor choice for a family with young children. She has done well with a Great Dane but not with a smaller dog. If you have a dog her size, that may work out. But on the other hand, she might be all the dog you need! 'Adult' is at least 3 years old. 'Large' is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard and approved application required. Visit or email for application.
