Posted Breed: Mountain Cur / Mixed. Cute Bruno is an absolutely adorable low-rider! He is a soft natured little guy who likes a good cuddle. He gets really excited when he sees a leash. He is a bit of a foodie and would benefit from a slow-down dish, but takes treats very nicely. He is good with nice dogs and likes to play, but won't take being bullied. Bruno is sadly already heartworm positive at his young age. Please discuss options with the shelter and your vet. He is worth the treatment! Approx DOB: Oct 2013 Intake weight: 42# http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com "Young" is up to 3 years old. "Medium" is between 13 to 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard usually required and approved application always required. Visit, email, or go to website for adoption application. Shelter phone often does not work, please use email link on this listing.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Do we ever have a treat for you! This girl is one of the very best dogs - she is social with people and dogs, enjoys toys - especially if they squeak! - and has nice manners once she's burned off a little pent up energy. She has been to the pet store and was wonderful - social, curious, walked nicely on the leash and loaded well into the crate. She is truly a special dog looking for a great home. She is far too interested in cats, tho, so that home should be cat-free! Est. DOB: Apr 2011 Weight: 41# http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years old. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Beautiful? Check. Friendly? Check. Sensible? Check. If this girl checks all YOUR boxes, come up and meet her! You will not be disappointed in this girl. She's just right! She is fine with other dogs in most situations - she has even been caught cuddling with her kennel buddy! Every now and then she might compete for attention. Mia has been to the pet store and she was fantastic - social and curious, just a little strong on leash. She doesn't care to go in a crate, but behaves once inside. He enjoys rough play with other dogs of similar size, but definitely likes to be the boss. He is as strong in will as he is in body, so needs someone used to large dogs! Breed: Mastiff-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Anniston, AL
Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). At nearly 3ft tall and 66lbs, Kodiak is a bear of a boy. He is a young bruin and stil has some lessons to learn about his size, but here we are in great luck - he LOVES a tennis ball. Or, specifically, an extra-large Chuck-It ball, tho a Jolly Ball would likely also do. The ball is a great training incentive, and he is also loves to toss and leap on it to entertain himself. Kodiak loves playing with and sweet talking the girl dogs. But like any reasonable bear, he will not share food and loudy defends his bowl. If his house holds more than one dog (and that is hard to imagine!), he will need fed completely apart in his own room with no food/treats left down ever. He will also need to leave the room before you pick up his bowl - this is where that Chuck-It! ball will help you. A qualified trainer can help him realize you are a good person to have near his bowl, because you are the one who makes the food happen. Adult-only home, please. Est DOB: Aug 2013 Intake Weight: 66lb "Adult" is at least 3 years old. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard and approved application required. Visit or email for application. Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed. It is hard to believe someone lost this big girl, but its true - she was found roaming. She is just a baby still, very young and silly. If you would love the challenge and reward of training up a young gal to be a model citizen, she is full of opportunity! Though definitely of a mastiff type, she is not as huge as a full mastiff (tho she isn't dainty either - she is 78#). She is very sweet and wants to be a lap dog, so be prepared! She does need plenty of exercise and attention to avoid turning her teeth toward destructive enterprises. Also, being big and clumsy, she would be a poor choice for a family with young children. She has done well with a Great Dane but not with a smaller dog. If you have a dog her size, that may work out. But on the other hand, she might be all the dog you need! 'Adult' is at least 3 years old. 'Large' is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard and approved application required. Visit or email for application.
