Posted Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). BEN has so much enthusiasm for life. He's a smiley fellow who enjoys the company of his person and loves an adventure. He's a well behaved gentleman who walks nicely on leash and stays close on off leash walks. He's been quite good with other friendly dogs and was fine with the kitty he lived with, but wants to chase cats he sees out and about. Ben is about 11 yrs. old and would love to have a home to relax in. He has plenty of energy and is happiest getting out for a walk every day. He rides well in the car and enjoys doing errands with his foster mom. We'd like to find a home for him without kids because he doesn't enjoy being touched everywhere by someone he doesn't know. His ideal home would be with a dog experienced, retired or semi-retired person who still enjoys getting out for a hike. Ben knows sit, down, speak and "get in the back". He's a VERY smart boy. application, home visit, adoption fee

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Baby
      Location: La Honda, CA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Boston Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). The Candy puppies were born to Kara who was found astray and came into rescue with us. Kara looks like a dachshund with a cute little fox face, and many of the pups are black and white with stub tails just like a Boston Terrier so we are guessing that was the father. There are 8 pups, 5 males and 2 females. 4 have natural stub tails and 4 have traditional long tails. Based on Kara's size we think these pups should be on the small side of medium (about 24lbs.). The pups will be 8 weeks on Dec. 25th and available for adoption then. We are taking applications now. They are just 4 weeks old now so mostly just eating. Will update as their personalities begin to show. application, home visit, adoption fee

Posted Breed: Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat). UPDATE: KARA was pregnant and had her puppies, so she's tied up caring for them for 8 weeks. She had 8 darling little ones (5 boys, 3 girls). They have a separate posting if you'd like to see pictures. After they are weaned, Kara and be spayed and will be available for adoption. KARA (formerly Julie - her foster mom thought she was such a "Supergirl" that she should be named Kara :) just arrived into rescue. Very shy and shut down in the shelter, she has blossomed into a happy, friendly girl in her foster home. She loves her foster mom, her husky foster brother, and her very shy kitty foster sister. We think she'd be fine with kids as well. With that resume, she could easily fit into many loving forever homes. Kara was found astray, but clearly had a home at some point as she so easily fit into her foster home. She is housetrained and quickly figured out how to use the doggie door. Smart little one! Kara is about 3 yrs. old and 20lbs. Kara is up to date on her vaccinations and will be spayed as soon as possible. application, home visit, adoption fee

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: La Honda, CA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). 9 yrs. young, Wylie is both a scholar and a gentleman. If there were PhD's for dog tricks, Wylie would definitely be Dr. W. No one knows where he acquired this knowledge, its a mystery, but its no mystery what a great companion this debonair fellow is. Wylie is fine with other dogs, but he lives for his human and is looking for a home with someone who is not gone all day and really appreciates a dog that is in tune with humans. Wylie is so personable, and really connects with people. Work at home? He'll lie happily at your feet. Retired and off on adventures? He'll be a happy companion in your RV, entertaining you and friends with his repertoire. Wylie appears to be a terrier mix of some sort, and is probably about 12lbs., just on the larger side of small, the perfect size to go everywhere with you. application, home visit, adoption fee

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: La Honda, CA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). ******* FOSTER(or of course FOREVER) HOME NEEDED! ******* To know MISTY is to love her. She's a sweet girl, smart and huggable. While affectionate, she's not needy. She likes to explore. Hiking is one of her favorite things to do. Her enthusiasm is infectious :) We believe that Misty is housetrained. She knows her sit command, though she prefers to get a treat to show it off. She has a very nice calm energy once she's settled in. She's had quite a tough life for the last year so she gets a bit worried when things are uncertain, but she's done well rebonding in several situations. She is resilient and will do well once she finds that committed family. Misty came into the shelter with Shepie and does ok with other dogs. She's been somewhat selective since Shepie was adopted. She liked to run and play with Shepie and makes alot of noise, but its all in good fun. She has an air of self confidence about her. We've not seen her around cats but she does have some prey drive so probably better not to live with kitties. UPDATE: Shepie has been adopted, and Misty is a little blue, but taking it pretty well. We have our fingers crossed she'll find her own home soon! Misty is spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccinations. application, home visit, adoption fee

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (long coat). UPDATE: Shepie has been adopted, but Misty (Miss T.) is still looking for her forever home. She's still in boarding and would dearly love a foster home while searching for her forever home. SHEPIE and MISS T. were owner surrenders when their family could no longer care for them. After being surrendered they escaped from the shelter and were lost in the desert for 17 days(!). Despite these less than ideal beginnings, they are friendly, happy dogs. Miss T. is outgoing and bouncy while Shepie is quieter, and a submissive boy. They are sweet, good dogs who need a home that has time to show them how good life can be. We are looking for a foster or a forever home. While it would be wonderful to find them a home together, we will consider separate placings for them with a gradual and gentle transition. They both know the sit command and walk easily on leash. Shep is about 63lbs. and Miss T. about 50lbs. application, home visit, adoption fee

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). ONYX (formerly Darling) is a very personable girl. Just a love, as in therapy dog material! 4 yrs. old and about 48lbs. she's a nice size. She's a calm and pretty gentle girl who enjoys getting pets and going for walks. She is strong on walks. Though she knows her heel command, she just can't resist when she see's a squirrel! She needs to work on this. She's very sweet and likes to curl up in your lap. Sometimes a little shy of people at first, a treat quickly brings her around and convinces her that you're are a good person, though she's gotten much braver in her time with us and has enjoyed meeting people out and about and at adoption events. She's been good with other dogs, can play well and enjoys saying hello while out on walks, but would prefer to be an only dog in her home. Onyx has done VERY well with kids. Though Onyx is currently fostered with a cat, she will chase and even grab a cat who is not very confident. For that reason, we'd like to find a home without cats, but if you are very experienced and have a very confident cat it is possible. Though she is a calm girl, she is also very athletic and needs her exercise, running around the yard, jogging, and playing ball all suit her fancy. She also LOVES water! Maybe she could do "dock diving" or...? Onyx is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and heartworm negative. application, home visit, adoption fee

We don't know how he ended up at the shelter, but are happy he's out and safely in rescue now. Rudie is just a nice fellow. He gets along great with his canine foster siblings and the cat as well. He just wants to get along. He enjoys cuddling and hanging out with his pack, but is very happy to go for a walk with you as well. Rudie is special needs because he has a nerve condition that makes it hard to control his pooping. This is not a huge problem. He just needs someone that can schedule his feeding and outdoor breaks regularly to help him out (not much to ask in exchange for a loving buddy). application, home visit, adoption fee

Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). JACK is a handsome boy, with many talents. His foster dad has done Rally with him, gotten his CGC, and most recently, he had a part in a student film! He is an energetic boy, that settles nicely after his exercise (he enjoys roller blading and hikes). He is smart and responsive. He doesn't enjoy attention from dogs he doesn't know, and will never be a dog park dog, though he has developed friendships with dogs he walks with. We think he'd be happiest/easiest as an only dog. Jack needs a dog experienced person that is interested in doing things with him, engaging his mind.application, home visit, adoption fee

Posted Breed: Greater Swiss Mountain Dog / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Sally (wkodit@comcast.net) for more information about this pet.Carlos is a big gentle boy. He has been calm and friendly to all he meets, but after being attacked by another dog in his adoptive home, he is no longer trustworthy with other dogs. He is housetrained and knows how to use a doggie door. He walks well on leash and enjoys a jog or hike. He rides well in the car and is easy to take along. He really likes kids, but because of his dog issues only older kids would be better. **We'd like to find him a home where he doesn't need to be around other dogs, but he has been working with a trainer on this and is much improved. He can be around other dogs to go for walks and such. He's doing so well! A home with large dog experience would be ideal. Carlos is such a nice boy and has so much to offer as a companion for the right home. He's super smart, and loves to give kisses. Carlos is about 9yrs. old and 89lbs. Carlos cannot live with cats. UPDATE: Carlos has developed a "protein losing enteropathy" which has responded well to treatement. He requires a special diet and an inexpensive medicine to manage this health problem. We are so sad that he's never, so far, found a loving home. Carlos has been a long term foster, and we are greatly appreciative of sponsorships. Thank-you, Kim for sponsoring him for September. Carlos is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and heartworm neg.application, home visit, adoption fee
