A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Cookie, our pocket pitty was found as a stray in North NJ. She is about 2 years old. Cookie is dog friendly and cat friendly and quite happy go lucky. She is sweet, fun and housebroken to boot! In fact, she goes potty in the same spot every time in the backyard of her foster home. She is very calm for her age and seems to be fascinated with toys - Nylabones and antlers the most. I don't think that she ever had a toy before. Cookie is 37 lbs and compact, making her look even smaller. She is now available for adoption through Wag On Inn. Cookie is fully vaccinated, microchipped and spayed. Her adoption fee is $400. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Amanda for more information about this pet. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Bambi came to us from a backyard breeder in North Carolina, and is looking for a loving forever home. She is about 4 years old, weighs 11 lbs, and was recently spayed and brought up-to-date with her vaccines and microchipped. Bambi can be a little shy when she first meets you, but loves to snuggle and give kisses once she knows you. Bambi's probably not a good match for small kids since they might make her nervous. Bambi loves other dogs. Bambi ignores the cats in her foster home. Bambi loves to cuddle and sleeps next to her foster mom every night. Bambi is learning how to walk on a leash, so at least initially she should go to a home with a fenced yard. She is nearly 100% housebroken and will use a pee pad if she can't get outside (overnight). She is really a very easy dog and very affectionate. She will make a great companion! Bambi is full of love to give! Bambi's adoption fee is $300. How to Adopt Me! Posted Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat). wagoninn.rescuegroups.org My name is Lexi. I'm a 6 year young German short haired pointer mix looking for a home without young children. I may or may not do well with another dog, I live with my dog brother now and love him, but don't like all dogs. I know all of the basic commands and love doing them for a "good girl", walk well on a leash, aim to please, enjoy going for runs/hikes and playing tug. I am sweet and love to snuggle, but get uncomfortable easily in unfamiliar situations. I'd do best in a home where I can be treated like the princess I am. How to Adopt Me!
