A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pekingese. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Bumbles is between 11 and 12 years old. Wag On Inn pulled him from a local NJ shelter, hoping to find him a home where he will be loved for the rest of his days. Bumbles has dry eye, so he will always need to take eye drops. His vision is impaired, but he is not blind, and can get around the house and outside just fine. Bumbles is fine living with other dogs in his foster home, but he can initially be nervous around larger, energetic dogs who might knock him over. Once he tells them to back off, he's fine! Bumbles loves people, and really likes to have his ears rubbed and to be petted. He's a low-energy dog, perfect for someone who wants a constant companion! Bumbles is housetrained and enjoys going for walks if it's not too frigid outside. He enjoys wearing sweaters and playing dress-up! Bumbles makes some very funny, howl-y noises when he is excited (usually because he knows food is being prepared!). He's very cute! He seems to be appreciative of having a loving home, and likes to be near his people. Bumbles is up-to-date on his shots and neutered. He was just shaved down because he was very matted. The groomer said he was very well-behaved for his grooming. Bumbles just had a dental cleaning and had teeth pulled (a typical small-dog problem). Look at that face! :-) Bumbles will make you laugh every day! Wag On Inn requests a donation for Bumbles, rather than a fixed adoption fee. How to Adopt Me! Breed: Australian Shepherd-Catahoula Leopard Dog Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog / Australian Shepherd / Mixed. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Shyla came to us pregnant! She's only a baby herself at about 10 months old. Shyla had 7 puppies on April 3rd!! Shyla is shy but oh-so-sweet. She has settled in to her foster home and is doing very well. Shyla looks like she is an Australian Shepherd mix or a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. Shyla will be available for adoption 9 weeks after the puppies are born (around June 5th). Shyla answers to "Momma" or "Momma Bear", and comes when called. She is good with other dogs and with kids (they are 10, 12, and 14 in her foster home). She has made great progress with her socialization and housetraining, although she will still have an accident (typically at night). She wasn't crated until recently because she needed access to her puppies. Her foster family is working on training her to walk on leash, and on her manners. Even though she's a mommy, she still is only a puppy herself! Shyla can be easily frightened by loud noises and quick movemeents, but she is improving every day. Her foster mom can't help but think she was abused and / or neglected, possibly a stray for a very long time? She is ridiculously cuddly and wants to be by her person all the time!! She is an absolute love bug, which compensates for any bad behaviors. With patience, love, dedication and consistency, she has the potential to be a practically perfect dog! Her foster family adores her! Her adoption fee will be $350. How to Adopt Me! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Amanda for more information about this pet. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Bambi came to us from a backyard breeder in North Carolina, and is looking for a loving forever home. She is about 4 years old, weighs 11 lbs, and was recently spayed and brought up-to-date with her vaccines. Bambi can be a little shy when she first meets you, but loves to snuggle and give kisses once she knows you. Bambi's probably not a good match for small kids since they might make her nervous. She would do best in a home with another dog who is confident because she could learn from him/her. She loves other dogs. Bambi ignores the cats in her foster home. Bambi loves to cuddle and sleeps next to her foster mom every night. She likes to talk to her foster mom and sometimes will whine for attention. Bambi is learning how to walk on a leash, so at least initially she should go to a home with a fenced yard. She is nearly 100% housebroken and will use a pee pad if she can't get outside (overnight). She is really a very easy dog and very affectionate. She will make a great companion! Bambi is full of love to give! Bambi's adoption fee is $350. How to Adopt Me! Posted Breed: Shepherd / Husky / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Wilma (wilmag718@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Shelby is a sweet senior girl, good with people, but not with other dogs - she should be the only dog in her home. She would be very happy with adults and older children. She is an excellent watchdog, and well-behaved in the home. Shelby is low-energy, easy-to-please, and likes to go on walks (short ones!). She is leash-reactive (lunging/barking) with other dogs. A fenced yard is best for her to enjoy her time outside. As she is in her senior years, she does have some health concerns (arthritis), but can still enjoy her time with you - as well as you enjoying her. If you'd like to open your heart and home to this sweet Senior, please fill out the application for her and hopefully meet her soon. How to Adopt Me!
