A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Oakhurst, NJ
Posted Breed: Hound / Cattle Dog / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Melissa (melissanecz@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Patches came to us from NC. She is a real cutie-pie, with plenty of pretty spots and patches! Patches is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly with affection and sweet-talking. She REALLY loves other dogs, and is good with cats, too. Patches will walk on leash, but will stop walking if she gets nervous. Patches' foster om says "I hate to be one of those foster moms that brags about their pups, but this gal had had no accidents in the house and she actually pawed at the back door today when she had to go out!" Patches is 10 months old and weighs 24 lbs. Patches' adoption fee is $400. How to Adopt Me! Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher (short coat). wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Luciano (Loochie) came to us as an owner surrender. He is 10 years old and has been with his family since he was a baby. Sadly, they no longer have time for him. Loochie is very playful and active, but also enjoys cuddling in bed. He's a very sweet boy who is good with everyone, including dogs and cats. We're told he doesn't like lawn mowers or vacuums, and he can be barky when excited (and when left alone in his crate), like most small dogs. He can be somewhat possessive over his bones, so we think a home without young children will be best. Loochie is up-to-date on his shots and is housetrained. He walks well on a leash. Loochie does get a daily dose of Phenobarbital to prevent seizures. Loochie's adoption fee is $250. How to Adopt Me! Please contact Wilma (wilmag718@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Shelby is a sweet senior girl, good with people, but not with other dogs - she should be the only dog in her home. She would be very happy with adults and older children. She is an excellent watchdog, and well-behaved in the home. Shelby is low-energy, easy-to-please, and likes to go on walks (short ones!). She is leash-reactive (lunging/barking) with other dogs. A fenced yard is best for her to enjoy her time outside. As she is in her senior years, she does have some health concerns (arthritis), but can still enjoy her time with you - as well as you enjoying her. If you'd like to open your heart and home to this sweet Senior, please fill out the application for her and hopefully meet her soon. How to Adopt Me! Location: Oakhurst, NJ
Posted Breed: Boxer / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Kathy (kk6251@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. wagoninn.rescuegroups.org Pepper looks like a Boxer mix, possibly mixed with a Jack Russell Terrier since she's so petite. Pepper weighs 29 lbs, and is 1 1/2 years old. She was adopted but her family would like her to have another home. Pepper gets along with other dogs and enjoys rides in the car. Pepper really loves to show affection, and she loves belly rubs. She is a playful pup, and is enjoying playing with all the doggie toys in her foster home. She tries to get all the other dogs to play with her. Pepper would enjoy a fenced backyard where she can run. Even though she is not super-high-energy, she likes to take a quick spin around the backyard. Pepper is very affectionate but we are told she is nervous with strangers in her adoptive home (but is great at doggie day care, for example). Her owner thinks it isn't the best match for her. Pepper is housetrained, and she knows "sit" and "down" (which means lie down and roll over for belly rubs!) Please note that Pepper has had 3 different names in the past 9 months - she was Zelda at the shelter in NC, Holly in her Wag On Inn foster home, and Pepper in her adoptive home. That's why she is called "Zelda" in her video. Confusing, but not to Miss Pepper, who will answer to any name spoken with a loving voice! Pepper's adoption fee is $350. How to Adopt Me!
