A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Coonhound / Hound (short coat). READY FOR ADOPTION - "Dahling...don't hate me because I'm beautiful!" who can resist this gorgeous face? Ruby-Tuesday aka RubyTue (formerly known as Daisy) is a playful 3 yr old female Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is a stunning tri-colored beauty with soft, soulful eyes and intelligence to match! She’s had a bit of a rough start being shuffled from shelter to shelter and a failed adoption behind her (through no fault of her own). Who could abandon this little sweetheart who ju st wants to give love & tail wags & kisses! RubyTue was pretty thin when she came to foster home with gastro-intestinal issues and required special food. But that turned out to be just stress and fear of being all alone in the world! She gained her body weight back quickly in a safe foster home with other canine siblings. She can be a little dominant with other dogs her own size, until she gets to know them and establishes her place in the hierarchy. She is very food motivated and will do anything you ask, just a simple treat and belly rub! She is learning her basic commands and knows “sit”; we are working on recall and crate training. RubyTue was not a fan of the crate initially but she now runs to it to get her meal and treats, she even recognizes it as her very own bedroom and safe place. RubyTue may have had a rough start in the world, but she is thankful that she landed with Gentle Jake’s Coonhound Rescue! Ruby MUST have a securely fenced yard with at least a 5 foot fence. Un-fenced yards will not be considered. Location: Ontario, ON
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Please contact Jean (houndrescue@yahoo.ca) for more information about this pet. Meet Shyla! This beautiful girl is an older Treeing Walker Coonhound who is approximately 9 - 10 years old. She is about 60 pounds. She is very friendly and just wants to be loved. She is still a little shy with certain noises but is gaining confidence every day. From her foster mom: Shyla is one of the sweetest, kindest dogs I have ever met. She is so gentle and loving. Shyla would love nothing more than to spend the day cuddling with her person on the couch and going for a couple of walks a day. She also enjoys going to the dog park. When Shyla first came to us she was very timid and shy (hence the name). She is still very unsure of certain noises and will run out the door but will soon come back inside. She has learned how to play with other dogs and discovered toys. It has been amazing watching her grow into a happy, more confident dog. I would love to see Shyla go to a home with another confident friendly dog to help her gain more confidence. She would love to have a buddy that she can snuggle with when her people are not at home. Shyla is crate trained and likes to go in her crate when there are thunder storms. She can be left alone uncrated and is not destructive and has not had an accident in the house. She walks very well on leash. She is also good in the car, she just lays down and goes to sleep. When she is nervous she does drool! Information about this dog is current. Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Coonhound (short coat). Please contact Jean (houndrescue@yahoo.ca) for more information about this pet. Ready for adoption! When Kruger arrived at his foster's house in December, he was an anxious boy who seemed to be quite unsure of himself. He was not comfortable in a crate, and would show quite a bit of anxiety when being left alone. Who could blame him? He was left tied outside 24-7 for the first 5 years of his life and then had a 10 hour ride to get him into a house setting with his foster family, and when he got there he had to deal with a giant slobbery Great Dane who called him brother. It was quite confusing for the poor guy. Well – Kruger has proved to be true darling and he is showing more of his true colours every single day. He loves his crate now - he will actually put himself to bed in it when his foster mom stays awake past his bedtime. He no longer howls when his foster mom leaves the house - he knows that she will be back (she promises every time) and he patiently waits. His housetraining is going very well - and he sits, gets down, and stays on command. Kruger walks well on-leash, and is great at his recall. He recently experienced the dog park with his sister Lyra, and he had a BLAST! He won over every dog there with his charming good looks and playful personality. And even with all the distractions, he would very regularly run back to his foster mom to make sure she was still there and watching him! He's incredible. Kruger LOVES everyone he meets. He's trying to catch up on 5 years of lost cuddle time and will snuggle up and flop over for a belly rub every chance he gets. He's also great with cats! He's actually been caught a few times playing with and grooming his feline brother Milo!!! Milo wishes he was a dog. Kruger will make a wonderful addition to anyone looking for an amazing hound to add to their lives. This boy aims to please - you can see it in his eyes. Kruger is 5yrs old, neutered and up to date with his vaccines. Sex: Male Male

      Location: Ontario, ON
Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Meet Roscoe! This big handsome boy is a gorgeous bluetick coonhound who is about 7 years old. He is about 80 pounds. Note from his foster mom: He is such a sweet boy, and very easy to integrate into the house. He loves hugs and cuddles, and will paw at me and even jump up on me if he's not getting the attention he wants. He is calm in his crate when it's bedtime or his people need to leave for work. He may fuss a little if he needs to go in his crate when it's not part of routine, but he does settle. He is smart too – he is quickly catching onto the rules and routines of the house. I make the dogs wait at the door before coming in and he is picking that up quickly. I am feeding him by hand and teaching him to look at me rather than at the food before he gets fed, and he learned that fast too. He also figured out how to open the lid on the dog food bin within 10 seconds. He pulled a lot on walks at first, but walks much better now. He loves squirrels and his wonderful ears stand right out when he's catches sight of one. He makes a wonderful BAROO when he is excited about going on a walk or just happy to be outside. He is a strong boy and will need a strong, confident adult to walk him. He was obviously a house dog before, because he climbed up onto the sofa and onto the bed and layed down right away. Roscoe seems more independent of other dogs (or is more secure). He does his own thing and doesn't necessarily follow the other two dogs in his foster home, when they are out in the backyard. I could see Roscoe going to a home on his own as he is more people oriented. Roscoe gets along with cats that don't run away from him. He will chase a running cat but will do well with a confident cat in the house. Due to Roscoe's bouncy personality, he may be best suited for a home with older children, as Roscoe doesn't know his own size. Roscoe is housetrained. Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Meet Andrea (nickname Andee)! She is approximately 4 years old and a hound mix. We are not 100% sure what her mix is but regardless she's pretty darn adorable! She arrived in Peterborough from Kentucky early this month during a cold snap and with snow on the ground. That was a shocker for this little sweetheart but she soon moved on realizing that she is now safe in a foster home. Andee is very smart…borderline brilliant. When Andee first arrived in foster care she was scary skinny but has since started to gain weight. She has one brown eye and blue eye which is not common with hounds but is somewhat more common with leopard hounds which she may be mixed with. She is house and crate trained, takes treats extremely gently and knows commands such a sit and down. She lives in a home with other dogs and doesn’t mind the cats that live there too. Andee likes to follow one of her foster siblings around the yard, ignores one and thinks the little one is a toy. She would do best in a home that did not have a small dog. Andee has discovered the toy box and now has her favourite toys scattered everywhere! She loves to cuddle and be hugged. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines. Location: Ontario, ON
Posted Breed: Foxhound (medium coat). Please contact Jean (houndrescue@yahoo.ca) for more information about this pet. Jackson was picked up as a stray in the countryside just outside of Ottawa. The vet estimates him to be 10 years old (although he has more energy than you'd expect from a 10 year old) and he weighs about 45 lbs. He is a sweet gentle boy who just wants to rest his head on your lap and gaze soulfully into your eyes while you rub his ears. He is playful with other dogs and with his toys, and he gets along wonderfully with the cats in his foster home. Jackson loves going for walks in the local parks, and is starting to enjoy walks around his suburban neighborhood, although the noise of passing cars still startles him. He used to howl along with the fire engine sirens, which was kind of cute, but he doesn't do that anymore now that he is used to them. He enjoys hanging out in the backyard and is pretty quiet for a hound, barking only occasionally as people pass by the house. Jackson doesn't like thunderstorms and will head to the safety of his crate to wait for the storm to end. He is a good boy in his crate and rarely makes a peep when he is in there. He is fully housetrained. Jackson has one eye that looks like it suffered some damage but the vet does not think it is painful. He doesn't seem to be able to blink, but the eye is well-lubricated and there is no damage to the cornea. We're not certain if he has any vision in that eye. There is nothing that needs to be done with it - maybe just drops every now and then if it seems irritated. Jackson has been neutered and has had dental work done to remove some bad teeth. Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Ontario, ON
Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Coonhound (short coat). Meeka is a female Treeing Walker Coonhound who is roughly 18 months old – still very much a puppy. She is extremely comical, playful and affectionate. Meeka is submissive and adores playing with other dogs, both male and female, big and small. She shows no signs of aggression (i.e. food or resource guarding). She is housebroken and looks forward to her regular walks and trips to the dog park. Meeka has not had very much formal training in her short life but is learning quickly what is acceptable and not acceptable in the home. She will require a family or individual that is willing to invest time and effort in her training to make her a great house hound. Meeka goes into her crate when she is left home alone and will fuss initially before settling down with a treat. At nighttime, she sleeps outside her crate without asking to go out for a bathroom break. If you let her, she will sleep the whole night in your bed sprawled out with her head on a pillow! She has a scar on her face that we are not sure how she got but it appears her lip has been torn back and then healed over on its own. She was extremely skinny when she first arrived but has since gained weight and looks much better. She has all the snuggles and kisses in the world to give and likes to be a part of the pack. She will follow you around the house as you do your chores and takes great delight in helping out in the kitchen. Meeka likes playing with toys and would do well in a home that already has a dog as she currently lives with a black lab and black and tan coonhound. Oh and her howl, well that’s a song only a true hound-lover will appreciate. Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. Filling out our application does not obligate you to adopt in any way. It does, however, help us to determine if the dog that your interested in would be a good match for your family and lifestyle. All of our dogs are fully vetted. They have been vaccinated, altered, microchipped and heartworm tested and on prevention. VISIT COONHOUND COMPANIONS WEBSITE TO SEE WHY ADOPTING A COONHOUND CAN BE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! www.coonhoundcompanions.com ADOPTION FEE: $375.00 LOCATION: Meeka is currently in foster care in Monteith, ON. With the help of volunteers, transportation to her forever home can possibly be arranged. Don't let distance deter you! If you would like to give this beautiful girl a forever home please fill out our on line adoption application at www.coonhoundrescue.ca/adoption-application
