Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Mixed. Shorty is a 12-year-old, 25-pound Basset Hound mix. Patches is his best friend and she is a 13-year-old, 33-pound Queensland Heeler. Shorty is a mellow guy who is very sweet with all people. He has a charming, calm personality. He gets along well with other dogs and is a well-behaved boy. He loves being petted and will give little kisses to tell you he's happy being around you. Patches is also a wonderful dog and has a quiet, calm demeanor. She is happy to accept scratches behind the ears and will walk up to anyone to say "hi." She is mostly deaf and has mild arthritis in her hips but has a very gentle, loving soul. Patches treats Shorty like her puppy and takes care of him. They tend to stick together and are very bonded. Shorty and Patches are house-trained and walk nicely on the leash, though they won't need long walks to tire them out. We do not know if they have lived with cats before but they are very calm dogs and would probably be fine with feline friends in the household. They are currently outdoor-only dogs and would love an opportunity to come back in the house and be a part of a family again. Shorty and Patches came to POMDR after their guardian passed away and their guardian's family members were unable to care for him.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Maeby

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Small Mixed Breed Age: 8 years Weight: 7 pounds Gender: Female This adorable girl is ready to meet you. Maeby warms up to new people quickly. She will walk up very slowly to a new person, but then allow them to pet her, and in return she gives them kisses. She does the same with children. Maeby can walk happily for miles, but at home she's very mellow, spending much of her time napping, sitting in laps or quietly chewing on a chewy. She gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster home, and they play together nicely. Maeby ignores the household cats unless they are persistent about pestering her. Maeby is fine meeting new dogs unless they are too rambunctious, in which case she worries. She walks very well on a leash in familiar places. In new or very busy places she can get spooked and try to pull somewhere that looks safe. When you have to go out without Maeby, she does fine inside the house with access to a doggie door, so that she may go outside into the yard whenever she wishes. Being confined seems to stress her a bit. Maeby rarely barks. Maeby's foster mom reports: "Maeby's best trait is how affectionate she is. She constantly dotes on her people. She is also the best cuddle buddy anyone could ask for. She loves bedtime and will fall asleep in your arms, right next to your head (she has her own pillow) or under the covers if you'll let her!" Maeby originally came to us from the Watsonville Shelter.

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Chihuahua Mix Age: 6 years Weight: 10 pounds Gender: Male Walter can be a bit reserved when first meeting you, but a few head scratches later and he's all yours. This little guy isn't clingy, though. He wants to spend his days near you, but he doesn't have to be sitting on your lap the entire time. Great news for people who like to avoid a dusting of dog hair on their pants. He is an active, alert doggie who enjoys going on walks and saying hello to other dogs. Walter quickly warms up to strangers, but he doesn't always enjoy the energy level (and volume) of young children. He's used to a more laid back scene. Before coming to POMDR, he was the gentle companion of a senior who has since passed away. Walter sleeps quietly in a crate at night and does just fine roaming free during the day. He shares his toys, but he likes to keep his food to himself. If there's a cat in the vicinity, Walter thinks it's great fun to run after it. He's a smart cookie who's currently learning better manners and catching on quickly. Walter will thrive in a relaxed environment with someone looking for a fun, four-legged friend to take on walks and love on.

      Daisy Maisy

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed. This precious little one-eyed lady is Daisy Maisy! She is an 11-year-old, 17 pound Terrier/Chihuahua mix and she'll steal your heart with a wink and a smile! She has a good, yet mellow, energy level, and she gets a little more excited at meal time. One of her favorite activities is going for short walks around the neighborhood with you, and Daisy will love to go for a car ride with you, too. Daisy Maisy lived in a family with both cats and older children and did well with them. She is good with other dogs and falls in love with most people that she meets. Daisy Maisy quickly rolls over to ask her new friends for belly rubs! Daisy Maisy's missing eye has no effect on her great personality - we don't know how long it has been missing, but she has adapted well. She has been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease and she is being treated for it. Though this is is a chronic disease, she is easily medicated, and as she adores being near you, Daisy will be easy to monitor throughout her life. Daisy Maisy was mostly an outdoor dog who slept in a dog house at night in her previous life. She deserves to come inside and be part of a loving family. Other than reminding Daisy not to jump on the couch, she is doing well with 'run of the house' while her current foster family is away. She'll miss you a bit when you go out, and she'll be all happy tail wags and wiggles when you return! She came to us from the SPCA for Monterey County where she was surrendered when her family moved into housing that didn't allow pets.

      Breed: Chiweenie
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed. Here's a special opportunity to bring twice the love into your family. Sasha is a 10-year-old, 5-pound Chihuahua (pictured left), and Priscilla, her half-sister, is a 9-year-old, 11-pound Chihuahua/Dachshund/Miniature Pinscher mix (we think). What we're sure about is that these two girls adore one another. They have been together since puppyhood and often sleep snuggled in the same bed, and they're looking for a special adopter who will protect their little family unit. Sasha can be shy, but only for a moment. She quickly warms up to strangers, especially if they put her in their lap where she can curl up and feel safe. She listens attentively, tilting her head from side to side as you talk. And she lets you know she'd like you to hold her by putting her tiny paws on your leg. Her big, bright eyes give a hint to the smart, confident dog she is. While she gets along well with other dogs of all sizes, she'll let big dogs know when they're making her uncomfortable. Sasha loves to go on walks, especially if you carry her most of the way and then give her time to get out and explore, and she's great riding in the car. Priscilla is the more bashful of the two, often looking to Sasha for guidance on how to behave. If Sasha warms up to another dog or person, Priscilla is sure to follow - she truly looks up to her big sister. Priscilla is great on the leash and loves to discover new things as you go on walks. She communicates via cute little grunts and sighs, and she's a bit of a quiet snorer at night. Priscilla loves a good belly rub or to be gently pet - she's not as much of a lap dweller as her sister. As long as you provide some reassurance, she's a good passenger in the car. Both girls are housetrained and mellow, resting quietly while you work or watch TV. They also behave when left home alone. Basically, they're happy as long as they have each other, a warm, safe place to sleep, and a person or two (or many) who loves them. They came to POMDR when their guardians moved into housing that didn't allow pets. We're happy to be able to keep them together.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Ansel is a sweetie pie! He's adorably playful and gives lots of toothless little kisses. Ansel is one of those dogs with whom everyone just falls in love. He will play wrestle with stuffed toys and chase them down when you toss them! He's so precious, that we find ourselves giggling at his antics often. Ansel greets you with his tail wagging, and he's also quite content curling up in your lap. He prefers to be picked up with two hands, and Ansel enjoys lots of gentle petting all over his little body. He is wary of too much intense contact from overly-enthusiastic little ones, so he would probably do best in a home without small children. Gentle, older kids would be just fine. Ansel gets along well with his foster sibling, and he politely shares his bones with her! He does well with all dogs. Ansel has even tried to engage in play with gentle, big dogs, so he'd do well with dogs of any size in his pack. Ansel loves walks and he does great on a leash, even with one of his doggie buddies! Ansel is a quiet fella who will just bark a bit when inspired to do so by a doggie pal. He does just fine with free run of the house, and he likes his crate, too, where he will put himself to bed at night when he is tired. He may also choose to sleep peacefully on the bed with you some nights! When Ansel goes out with you for a car ride, he would love to sit in your lap, but he is such a good boy that he will lay quietly in the passenger seat instead. Ansel is such an easy dog; he is social, friendly, house-trained, quiet, playful, cuddly, and oh-so-eager to please! He's a bright ray of sunshine! Won't you give him his forever home, and let him make your days even brighter? Ansel is came to us from Salinas Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Pepe and Taz are brothers! And boy, do they love each other. No sibling rivalry here - they are quite content both being in your lap at the same time and falling soundly asleep. These two are quiet, easy keepers who get along well with dogs of all sizes. Pepe and Taz are adorable. Taz is the slightly more "tan" colored dog, so yes, it's possible to tell them apart! They can often be found kissing or cuddling, or asking politely for you to pick them up. Pepe and Taz lived with other dogs and three kitties in their previous family and they got along with everybody. Their favorite pastime (other than getting your attention) is lounging on a sunny patio and soaking up some rays. We'd love to keep Pepe and Taz together. They have been together since puppyhood and came to us when their guardian passed away. Do you have room for twice the Chihuahua lovin' in your life?

The vet says that she is making excellent progress and has hopes she will be able to walk someday, but she is still on crate rest for a few weeks. Phoebe has a darling, silly personality and is NOT shy! She loves toys and giving kisses. She is outgoing with people and nonchalant about meeting other dogs. She is good at riding in the car.
