Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Mixed. Shorty is a 12-year-old, 25-pound Basset Hound mix. Patches is his best friend and she is a 13-year-old, 33-pound Queensland Heeler. Shorty is a mellow guy who is very sweet with all people. He has a charming, calm personality. He gets along well with other dogs and is a well-behaved boy. He loves being petted and will give little kisses to tell you he's happy being around you. Patches is also a wonderful dog and has a quiet, calm demeanor. She is happy to accept scratches behind the ears and will walk up to anyone to say "hi." She is mostly deaf and has mild arthritis in her hips but has a very gentle, loving soul. Patches treats Shorty like her puppy and takes care of him. They tend to stick together and are very bonded. Shorty and Patches are house-trained and walk nicely on the leash, though they won't need long walks to tire them out. We do not know if they have lived with cats before but they are very calm dogs and would probably be fine with feline friends in the household. They are currently outdoor-only dogs and would love an opportunity to come back in the house and be a part of a family again. Shorty and Patches came to POMDR after their guardian passed away and their guardian's family members were unable to care for him.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sampson Pom

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Pominese
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pekingese / Pomeranian / Mixed. Breed: Pomeranian, Pomeranian Age: 9 years, 9 years Weight: 15 pounds, 15 pounds Gender: Male, Male Sampson and Goliath are brothers and are very bonded to each other. These guys are friendly and playful with everybody they meet - people, kids and dogs alike! We've nicknamed them "Copy and Paste." They even approach kitties with a gentle curiosity and would be fine with them in their future family. They're very good dogs who are both house-trained and crate-trained. They are great on leash and enjoy going for short walks. They're precious, sweet and will keep you laughing. Sampson is the "nurturer" of the two and is constantly taking care of his brother's hygiene by cleaning his face and ears. Goliath is the adventurous one who would prefer to be exploring your house and checking your floor for crumbs. Goliath has degenerative disease in his back and it is touch and go some days. He may eventually be completely paralyzed. We have been managing his condition with medication and mobility restriction and that helps. He is very attached to his brother, Sampson, who is being treated for heart disease. He takes daily medication which runs approximately $150 per month and he needs an ECG and radiographs every 4-6 months. They are being fostered by a veterinary ICU nurse, so are in very good hands. They do both have a lot going on, so would need to go to a home willing to see them through their medical needs and the related expenses. Sampson and Goliath have been loved dogs their whole life, but were surrendered to POMDR when their guardians lost their pet-friendly housing.

      Walter White...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Chihuahua Mix Age: 6 years Weight: 10 pounds Gender: Male Walter can be a bit reserved when first meeting you, but a few head scratches later and he's all yours. This little guy isn't clingy, though. He wants to spend his days near you, but he doesn't have to be sitting on your lap the entire time. Great news for people who like to avoid a dusting of dog hair on their pants. He is an active, alert doggie who enjoys going on walks and saying hello to other dogs. Walter quickly warms up to strangers, but he doesn't always enjoy the energy level (and volume) of young children. He's used to a more laid back scene. Before coming to POMDR, he was the gentle companion of a senior who has since passed away. Walter sleeps quietly in a crate at night and does just fine roaming free during the day. He shares his toys, but he likes to keep his food to himself. If there's a cat in the vicinity, Walter thinks it's great fun to run after it. He's a smart cookie who's currently learning better manners and catching on quickly. Walter will thrive in a relaxed environment with someone looking for a fun, four-legged friend to take on walks and love on.

      Daisy Maisy

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed. This precious little one-eyed lady is Daisy Maisy! She is an 11-year-old, 17 pound Terrier/Chihuahua mix and she'll steal your heart with a wink and a smile! She has a good, yet mellow, energy level, and she gets a little more excited at meal time. One of her favorite activities is going for short walks around the neighborhood with you, and Daisy will love to go for a car ride with you, too. Daisy Maisy lived in a family with both cats and older children and did well with them. She is good with other dogs and falls in love with most people that she meets. Daisy Maisy quickly rolls over to ask her new friends for belly rubs! Daisy Maisy's missing eye has no effect on her great personality - we don't know how long it has been missing, but she has adapted well. She has been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease and she is being treated for it. Though this is is a chronic disease, she is easily medicated, and as she adores being near you, Daisy will be easy to monitor throughout her life. Daisy Maisy was mostly an outdoor dog who slept in a dog house at night in her previous life. She deserves to come inside and be part of a loving family. Other than reminding Daisy not to jump on the couch, she is doing well with 'run of the house' while her current foster family is away. She'll miss you a bit when you go out, and she'll be all happy tail wags and wiggles when you return! She came to us from the SPCA for Monterey County where she was surrendered when her family moved into housing that didn't allow pets.

      Maeby

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Maeby is a 7 pound, 7-year-old Chihuahua mix. She's a bit shy with new people, but warms up quickly. She will walk up very slowly to a new person, but then allows them to pet her, and in turn she gives them kisses. She does the same with children. Maeby can walk happily for miles, but at home she's very mellow, spending much of her time napping or sitting in laps. She gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster home, and they play together nicely. Maeby enjoys just hanging out, too, preferably with a "knee cap" to chew on!. Maeby overcame some initial nervousness with the household cats to the point where she now ignores them unless they are too persistent about pestering her. Maeby is fine meeting new dogs unless they are too rambunctious, in which case she worries. She walks very well on a leash in familiar places. In new or very busy places she can get spooked and try to pull somewhere that looks safe. Her foster family is working on this. When you have to go out without Maeby, she does fine with free roam inside the house and access to a doggie door so that she may go outside into the yard whenever she wishes. Being confined seems to stress her a bit. Maeby rarely barks, and usually will bark only once if she does feel the need. Maeby's foster mom reports: "Maeby's best trait is how affectionate she is. She constantly dotes on her people. She is also the best cuddle buddy anyone could ask for. She loves bed time and will fall asleep in your arms, right next to your head (she has her own pillow), or under the covers if you'll let her!" Maeby originally came to us from the Watsonville Shelter. She was adopted by a loving family several months ago, but one of their dogs is afraid of Maeby so we are looking for a new home for her.

      Breed: Miniature Pinscher-Unknown Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed. Breed: Miniature Pinscher Age: 8 years Weight: 8 pounds Gender: Male This adorable fellow likes to experience the world through his nose. He sniffs everything in his path on walks, including other dogs and the people he meets. Whether he's around strangers or friends, Marlon lives for just a little bit of attention. He blisses out on head and butt scratches and loves to curl up in a friendly lap. Same goes for car rides - if your lap is available, he's happy to keep it warm. Though Marlon is a wiggles-and-wags kind of guy, he was overlooked at the shelter for several months. After getting to know him and his gentle, loving disposition, we just can't understand why. But we definitely can see his potential to be an awesome new member of your family! Marlon gets along great with other dogs and cats and anyone who'll give him love. He relaxes in his crate at night or when you're gone and loves being by your side during the day. He's getting a refresher course on housetraining and so far doing great. Marlon is going to make someone a loving companion and fun partner for getting out and exploring the world. Marlon came to us from Salinas Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Dachshund/Chihuahua mix Age: 1 year Weight: 6 pounds Gender: Female Phoebe is a special needs sweetheart looking for the perfect adopter. She suffered a spinal injury before arriving at San Jose Animal Services, and a good samaritan knew she deserved a second chance. Phoebe is recovering nicely from spinal surgery, with a possibility of eventually regaining some ability to walk. The vet says that she is making excellent progress and has hopes she will be able to walk someday, but she is still on crate rest for a few weeks. Phoebe has a darling, silly personality and is NOT shy! She loves toys and giving kisses. She is outgoing with people and nonchalant about meeting other dogs. She is good at riding in the car. Her foster mama says she is an "overall great dog" who just needs extra TLC because of her back injury. Do you have room in your heart for this babe?
