Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (Parson Russell Terrier) (short coat). This very special senior boy is looking for a loving person to call his own. Coco is a very happy, sweet and gentle senior boy who is in need of a forever home - his loving owner is planning extensive travels and will be living overseas for a portion of the year - and so Coco is hoping that someone will provide him a loving family in his retirement years. Coco is a darling Jack Russell Terrier who is just shy of 12 years of age and is neutered and current on his vaccines. Weighing just 12-15lbs., he's a great small size! Coco has lost his eyesight and so needs a home comfortable with having a blind dog, but he's acclimated beautifully and still loves to go on walks and play. He's fully housebroken and uses a dog door with ease, and he's had much experience with his owner's grandkids and has been wonderful with them. He's a great dog who also loves to be in your lap if given the opportunity. He'll make a great companion for a special person looking for an easy-going, good-natured, gentle dog who's hopeful for a family of his own. Coco is a courtesy listing through our Re-Homing Assistance Program and has not been met or evaluated by CCHS. For more information on Coco or to potentially adopt him, please contact Bill at wkhbill@pacbell.net or at 925-947-6947. Thank you!

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. August 2017 update: Rollie is currently receiving further treatment and evaluation for some complications she's had since her pelvis break (decreased space for her colon). We're not able to place her in a home just yet, but we'll be sure to keep her status updated. Due to Rollie's extensive medical bills, if you'd like to help this incredibly sweet girl, please consider donating directly to our Phinny Fund for Emergency Medical and Special Needs Animals. Every dollar helps tremendously to ensure that we can continue to help Rollie while still being able to rescue other dogs in need, too. Thank you! Rollie is the cutest, wiggliest, happiest little 8lb. Chihuahua there is, and to say that her disposition is anything short of a miracle given her tough upbringing is an understatement! Rollie came to a public shelter after being brought in from a hoarding case. She clearly was loved by her person, but it's difficult for any animal to receive proper care when they're only one of dozens. She was fearful and shut down at the shelter, hiding in the back of the dog run and too afraid to make eye contact. But once she found herself in a great foster home, the wiggles came out full force! She is definitely one thing for sure: an absolute lovebucket! Not long after arriving at her foster home, her foster mom arrived home from work to find that little Rollie had managed to escape her dog run outdoors, where she was allowed to relax with her two resident dogs and bask in the sunshine for the day. Two days later, Rollie was brought to an emergency clinic by a concerned citizen after being found wandering, and the poor baby had been hit by a car (seriously, talk about a tough go of things!). But did that slow down her shiny disposition and wagging tail? Nope! Not one bit. Rollie has had to have cage rest since being found in order to best help her pelvis heal (surgery was explored but not recommended by surgeons), but as nothing has been easy in this girl's life, neither was healing - her pelvis did not realign and no bone growth was evident in post-healing xrays. Amazingly though, her muscles and tendons have kept everything in place and this girl walks, plays and hops around as though nothing happened whatsoever. She is seriously a miracle girl! Rollie is estimated to be 3 years of age and is current on her vaccines and microchipped. She will be spayed one any potential healing time is finished. She's absolutely fantastic with other dogs and loves people. She'll need an adult household where someone understands that long runs on the beach probably aren't in this girl's future, but walks and snuggling most certainly are! If you have a soft spot for helping dogs who've been dealt a rough hand in life (hoarding, hit by a car and an all-black coat (the most commonly euthanized in shelters and least commonly adopted)), then we've got your girl for you! The hard times put the shine into the diamond, and a diamond this girl is. Location: Foster Home

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Dachshund. Handsome Henri is a snugglebug by nature who craves attention from people and would love to be someone's very best friend. He's very playful and is happy to entertain himself with toys if you're busy or to run around and play chase with canine friends. He loves to go on walks and also quickly discovered that the couch is a super cuddly spot to hang out with you when you're relaxing, so if you're up for some downtime, so is he! Henri is 2 years of age and is neutered and current on his vaccines. He does well in a crate overnight or while you're away. He has some fearful tendencies upon first meeting new people, but with a go-slow approach, his tail will soon start wagging and he'll climb up into your lap and lavish you with kisses. Because of these tendencies, we feel he'd do best in an adult-only household where someone is understanding of the fact that this sweet boy has been through a lot of change recently and will thrive from some stability. He immediately relaxed upon arriving in his foster home and was quickly playing with toys and the resident dogs, so while we'd expect something of the same sort in a new home, he'll just need some time to adjust to meeting new people in the great big world. Henri lives with cats but has a tendency to chase them, so without someone willing to teach him boundaries with feline friends, he'd be best in a household without cats. Other fun-loving resident dogs though, count him in! This handsome little fellow can't wait to meet you! Location: Foster Home

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Can you even handle all of this floppy puppy cuteness?! This darling litter of six is way too adorable for their own good, and don't believe for one second that they don't use every ounce of it to their advantage when it comes to being loved on! There is simply nothing to not fall in love with when it comes to these guys. This litter of six consists of three males and three females, five of which are short-haired and one that came out all fluffed up! They are estimated to have been born on June 7th and are current on their vaccines and de-worming. All are available to foster-to-adopt homes until such time as they're spayed/neutered and can be officially adopted. As with all young puppies, they'd do best in a home where someone isn't gone for 8-10 hours/day due to their young age, and would of course love another canine buddy to help show them the ropes! Expect to potty train, but also expect to be lavished on with stinky puppy breath! If you are interested in meeting one or more of these puppies, please complete an adoption application through our website. These puppies will be attending our adoption event on Saturday, August 5th at the Hospice Thrift Shop in Martinez from 10am-2pm (550 Morello Ave., Martinez). Those with pre-approved applications will be lined up with meetings first. Location: Foster Home

      Bella

      rescue
      Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / American Pit Bull Terrier. Beauty is in her name! Bella is a very sweet, very affectionate Pittie mix who's smaller frame lends her to being the perfect travel-sized companion. She adores being held and lavishing people with a full face-wash of kisses, and she's very open and trusting. Her resiliency is amazing given her fairly traumatic recent past. Bella was confiscated by Animal Control on suspicion of cruelty; she had bite wounds all over body and she was limping on her front leg. Soon after arriving at the shelter, it was also discovered that she was far along in a pregnancy. She was allowed to go to a caring foster home through a rescue group, but the stress and trauma were too much; one by one, each of her newly born eight pups passed away, leaving Bella to be a new mom without any mouths to feed. Charges were not filed against her previous owner, but that person never returned for this sweet girl. Fortunately for her, the rescue group who took her in - Good Newz Pittie Pups Rescue - and her loving foster weren't going to give up on her, too. Given just a bit of time, this diamond began to shine! Bella is estimated to be 1 year of age and is spayed and vaccinated. She's been great with other dogs, but would prefer a home without cats, or one with someone familiar with desensitizing her to cats appropriately (What?! They're not there to chase?!). She's also been great with kids. She's crate-trained and nearly spot on with her potty training, though after being kept as an outdoor dog for most of her life, a little time and patience while she learns the routine should be expected. She wants nothing more than to be part of your pack and someone's very best friend, and after all she's been through in just the last few months, we think she deserves nothing short of the moon and stars! Bella is a courtesy post for Good Newz Pittie Pups Rescue. CCHS has not met or evaluated Bella. For more information on Bella, please contact Lori at pittie-pups@pennantsystems.com, or you may complete an adoption application through the CCHS website, which will be forwarded to Lori. Thank you!

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Charlie has gone from wounded shelter pup to sweater model thanks to his fantastic foster mama! This handsome, affectionate, sweet little Chihuahua boy was brought into a public shelter after suffering a trauma (his injuries indicate that he was likely hit by a car) that left him with broken ribs on the left side of his little body. Nothing will dampen his gentle spirit, however, and one of his favorite things to do is snuggle and soak up life in the lap of luxury! Charlie is estimated to be 9 years of age and is neutered, microchipped and current on his vaccines. X-rays done at the time of his neuter showed that he was healing up quite well, and based on how much love he has to give and how well he gets around, it seems he's feeling great! Charlie is not expected to have any long-term effects of his rib fractures, and this little guy is ready to find a great forever home. He'd do fantastic in an adult home or one with small-dog savvy teenagers and he's been great with his foster mom's resident dogs. He's an absolute charmer who would love nothing more than to wiggle his way into your heart (give him 2.2 seconds and his spell has been cast!). CCHS is able to help deserving dogs like Charlie, as well as in-need cats, through our Phinny Fund for Emergency Medical and Special Needs Animals. If you'd like to help us save the lives of these deserving friends, please consider donating to the Phinny Fund today through our donation link. Thank you! Location: Foster Home
