A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

She takes treats very nice and her favorite is oranges and pineapple. She loves to go for walks and also is a great snuggle buddy. NO kitty cats for this girl or small dogs. She was adopted and then returned after 3 years. She was not comfortable with the new baby after the baby started crawling. But her BFF is 6 now, she was 3 when they got her. Sadly they had to return her to us. This is the Bio her Foster / Trainer wrote for her. She has been in Training since Thanksgiving weekend. Hello All! I'd like to introduce Ms. Sophia! She's a super sweet, lovey girl who loves to go on walks, snuggle on the couch (or in bed) and play fetch with her squeaky tennis ball (she pretty much carries it everywhere!). She's perfectly content in her kennel if you have to leave. Her house training is outstanding. She's a little on the shy side which causes her to be fearful of other dogs and small children. So, she would do best as an only dog, in a home with no small children. She's been hanging at my house for the past few weeks and we've been working on her obedience and general manners, as well as bringing her out of her shell a bit. She is available for adoption through the Guardians of the Green Mile. You can fill out an adoption application at www.gotgm.org. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If you know someone who may be interested, please have them contact me with any questions. At the very least, I'm asking everyone I know to please share her info so we can find her an awesome home to call her own. Bacci found himself sitting at Chicago Animal Care and Control when the police responded to a domestic abuse call. The police confiscated Bacci from his home, arrested his abusive dad, and took his mom to the hospital. Bacci then became part of the amazing Safe Humane Chicago Court Case Dog Program, which works to protect police confiscated dogs, and find them new homes. Bacci is an adorable"little nugget" who weighs 45 lbs and is about 4 years old. Your guess is as good as ours with what he's mixed with, but those ears are just something else! Bacci is a pretty chill little guy who is easy going and sweet as pie. He enjoys car rides, sun bathing, walks around the neighborhood, eating peanut butter, and snuggling up with you on the couch. Once in a while he will get the zoomies with one of his favorite toys in his mouth! Bacci loves companionship, and would probably enjoy having a furry sibling in his forever home, or someone who is home more often than gone. He would do just fine in an apartment or condo, and would probably prefer a calmer home environment- he doesn't need a crazy household to keep him entertained! This little nugget is CAT and DOG friendly!!! However, children seem to make him nervous, so kids 13+ is best. Could Bacci be your forever boy? The others that were confiscated were not able to be apart of the program and we believe that they were beating poor Pookie Pots up. She is a very loving little girl that loves to go for walks, Car Rides and Snuggling while watching a movie with you. She is the kind of girl that wants to just make you smile and offers kisses all day long. She is good with other dogs but requires a very slow introduction to other animals. She is apartment sized or travel size. She loves kids and has no issues resource guarding. Do you want to offer this little girl a forever home, She deserves to have the life we promised her. Being apart of the Safe Humane Chicago program she also comes with a lifetime of Free ONE ON ONE TRAINING. Thank you for your interest in adopting a pet from Guardians of the Green Mile Inc. We are a group of individuals that have come together to save the lives of animals that are in danger of being euthanized. We raise funds to fully vet the animals and to provide them with a stable home until they are adopted. All of the dogs in our Rescue are in Foster homes while they are looking for their forever family. The only time we put a dog in boarding is for a Foster to go on vacation if another Foster is not able to care for them. We appreciate your taking the time to fill out the application to adopt one of our Guardians of the Green Mile pets. The questions that we ask are to only find the right fit for all of our dogs and the families that will be adopting them. Adoption fees are $250 for dogs that are 1 year and older. $300 for puppies under 1 year. Included in the adoption fee: All animals will be fully vetted, micro chipped and spayed or neutered. (Deposit of $50.00 required if they are not old enough to have the surgery) Renter’s will be required to submit a copy of their lease agreement to verify Landlord and also All Fosters and Adopters that have personal animals must be spayed / neutered. Age appropriate and healthy enough for surgery, we will verify that with the reference call to your Veterinarian. We are 100% volunteer operated and will process your application within a few days to a week depending on volunteer availability. We will be checking with your veterinarian and personal references, please let them know ahead of time.
