A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Collie / Mixed (short coat). Cattle Dog Mix, Neutered male, 2.5 years old, 50 pounds Cowboy, 3 years old Neutered 47lb When you see me, you then understand what I am named Cowboy - I look just like a cute little cow. Unlike a lot of poor stray dogs, I used to have a family. Sadly, one day in early April, I was abandoned on the hill of a mountain when I was about five months old. I didn’t’ know what was going on and still faithfully waiting for my family to pick me up. After wandering there for a few days, I was hungry and exhausted. As I was feeling hopeless, two kind ladies spotted me and came to my rescue. Thankfully, I was cared for in a loving foster home and then put up for adoption. However, dogs like my size are not easy to be adopted since most people live in apartments and prefer dogs of smaller size. It is God’s blessing, though. My foster mom is not in a rush to find me home. Instead, she is very careful when choosing a home for her rescues because cases of dog abuse are reported often here. Besides, she doesn’t want me to be abandoned again. I am friendly to people even though I am shy at the beginning. Mom says my color makes me very special and beautiful and that I deserve a nice warm family to love and take care of me forever. I hope they find me soon because I’m just bursting to give someone all my love! Alpha_______ or submissive V Energy level: medium Does the dog get along with other dogs at home? Not every dog. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Mountain Dog / Mixed (short coat). Jomay: 2 years, spayed female, 32 Lbs. Jomay is a very friendly and smart but a little shy girl. She gets scared and nervous when meeting strangers at beginning. However, once she gets familiar and feels comfortable with strangers she becomes very sweet and attach to new people. The rescuer first met Jomay when she was wandering at parking lot near our house. One day we found her was lying on the ground and covered with blood, the rescuer took her to the Pet hospital immediately. The doctor said Jomay was pregnant but due to her bad health condition and heavy weight in tummy that caused miss carriage of her babies. That had caused her not only lost her babies and almost died from the heavy bleeding. Two weeks recuperating after emergency treatment, Jomay finally recovered and ready to go home. The rescuer coundn't keep her inside her small apartment, sadly the rescuer had to leave Jomay back to the parking lot. So the rescuer did neuter and cut ear mark.(TNR) But the rescuer can hear Jomay howling at night and each time she walks by, she would run to us and want to follow the rescuer home. Recently, the rescuer found that someone would go to the parking lot or nearby area to take dogs killing them and selling them to the meat market. She is such a sweet and good girl that the rescuer was afraid she may end up getting killed and become someone’s food. So, the rescuer tried to find her a foster home that can be temporary for her to stay. Because Jomay was so badly abused in the past, she gets nervous and was shy when she met new people. However, after few months staying in the foster home with good care Jomay's personality has improved a lot. She still gets shy when meeting strangers, but after spending time and become comfortable with you, she will follow you and lay nearby you. She is also well trained and house broken, also loves to riding in the car. Jomay is a very people friendly and loving dog, she is very calm, sweet and well behavior with both adult and kids. However, maybe her past experiences of long term suffering without food and was attack by other animals. She does become very protective to her food. She is suitable for family without other pets because she may be fighting over food. Jomay is a sweet girl that just wants to be with people she trusted and show her some loves. We sincerely hope there will be an angel shows up and adopt Jomay soon to give her a forever home that she can also loves you back unconditionally. There will be no more scary days and nights wondering on the street or worrying about losing her life. Morris is a sweet, active boy, When he meets the people who are comfortable with him, he always welcomes them with a big simile and a non-stop wagging tail. By nature, he is easy-going and playful. His story starts with four scared and bewildered puppies in deplorable conditions. They were dumped by a busy road next to a traditional market. Their lives were in imminent danger before they were rescued hours before the dog catcher would cruelly catch them and take them to the pound. The puppies were rushed to the vet, all of them suffered from skin infections. They were well vetted and carefully nursed back to health. Morris is one of these puppies. He is a little hesitant to approach strangers in the beginning, but he can warm up very quickly with treats or food. He gets along well with dogs and children. He is very affectionate to people and enjoys playing with people. Even though he is so young, he already potty trained on newspaper and pads. He is so smart to learn simple commands very quickly. We are looking for a home that understands the responsibilities of owning and raising a puppy. He deserves to have a forever home! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mountain Dog / Mixed (short coat). Beautiful, blind puppy looking for forever home! Surry, neutered male, 6 months old, 32Lbs. Surry was either abandoned very young or accidentally left motherless in the wild; with him there were three other siblings. He was the only male. All puppies, about 2.5 months old, were in extremely poor health condition, especially blind Surry, who had badly suffered from malnutrition that he got very thin hair. Months passed, Surry grew up strong and healthy, his body is covered with lovely wavy velvet brown hair, but he was defensive and friendless. Having difficulty to differentiate malice or goodwill while other puppies charging on him, Surry started to bluff and bluster by barking aloud to show his suspicions. The blind puppy shows great affection to his human but not to other puppies. He was always standing aside, "hearing” others play. Everything has changed, however, since the day the "Beauty" and the "Beast" met each other. At first, they avoided each other: Surry by growling and chasing, and Scarlett by sheltering herself in a crate. For many days, I had been trying to crate training Scarlett but in vain, nonetheless, Surry helped to accomplish it within ten minutes. When Scarlett came out of her crate and offered her favorite toy, a teddy bear, to Surry and invited him to play with her, I was totally overwhelmed by their new friendship. Since that day, they have become best friends. The beautiful girl leads her blind friend to explore everywhere in the house; while Surry , the grumpy boy follows his new friend searching high and low by smelling and tracing her position for guidance. So fortunate they have each other for companies! Inspired, I then pair them as "Beauty and the Beast", hoping their friendship can last as long as possible! Marti is very friendly and cuddly! He is so passionate to people that he can wake you up every morning with his loving kiss!!! He is all about food, playing and his beloved humans. He can greet with his passion and wagging tail to everyone, even strangers! Marti is suitable for all ages of people. He is very sociable, only shows a bit shyness when meeting stranger kids at first, but he is very gentle to kids and people, and he can warm himself up to the new kids and new environment in a short time. Marti was rescued along with her other 5 siblings in the rural mountain area. Mother dog hid them on a dangerous hill, and there was a road above and a ditch under their hidden site. What’s even worse, several big dogs attacked them when the mother dog was out for food. Luckily enough we found them and took them to the vet in time and had them examined. They were found to suffer from mal nutrition and some injuries. Therefore, we arranged them to stay with foster families for better care and medical treatment. As his wounds are healing fast, most of the missing fur is gradually growing back, it simply needs some time. Now not only his coats are shinier, skin problems are much improved, but he is also so much healthier and full of life! Marti is ready for a forever home! He is a lovable and adorable little one who is full of puppy energy. Very soon we all were sitting in a clean box with soft mat to keep us warm. One of the nice lady took us to an animal hospital for though physical checkup. Posted Breed: Miniature Schnauzer / Mixed. Belle, spayed female, 5 months old, 14 Lbs. Hi, my name is Belle. Thank you for reading my story. I don’t know where I was born. All I remember is my brother Jesse and I were taken to a high killed shelter when were just 2 months old. The shelter was full of death scene, we were so scared. Day after days, no one came to adopt us. But on the day I was about to be put to sleep, an angel took me and my brother out of the hopeless place. Since then, our lives changed. My foster mom is a very kind person. She takes very good care of us. We are very lucky to be raised in a happy foster home. We learned some manner not to bark and not to be mischievous when we were left along home. But, sometimes I chew because that is part of the puppy play. I like people very much and enjoy to be petted and love cuddles. I also get along very well with foster big doggie brothers and sisters.
