A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Hi! My name is Bandit. I am a black and white male Chihuahua. I am 9 years young and weigh approximately 10 lbs. I am so lucky! I have the best Mom and Dad a pup could ever ask for. They love me to the moon and back. Our lives are changing though as, due to illness, they can’t care for me or my sister Nina like they used to. They want only the very best for me. That is why I am looking for a new family to love me. About me. I like treats. Snacks are good also. I like to walk…over to my food dish. (I kid!) I have to be honest with you. I’m not exactly at my ideal ‘target’ weight. Maybe you can help me with that? I like to have my ears rubbed and my parents want you to know that I have an adorable personality. (Blushing) I’m a laid back fellow. I like to smell flowers. I like to ride in my little wagon or in the basket on a walker. I get along well with other dogs. I am doggy door trained. I like to cuddle with my people. Do you like to cuddle too? I am neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. My adoption fee is $80. If you’d like to meet me please fill out an online dog adoption application on the Animal Rescue Friends website. http://www.animalrescuefriends.org/dog-adoption-application.html

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Hi! My name is Nina. I am a black and fawn female Chihuahua. I am 10 years young and I weigh approximately 10 lbs. I am so lucky! I have the best Mom and Dad a pup could ever ask for. Our lives are changing though as, due to illness, they can’t care for me or my brother Bandit anymore. So, I am here seeking a new family to love me now. I hope you take a chance on me as I still have so much more love to give! About me. I like to play fetch and go for walks. I love to give kisses and I am very good at it! I also love to eat treats…maybe a little too much. My waistline isn’t what it used to be so I’m thinking I may need to cut back on the snacks a little bit. My parents want you to know that I have an adorable personality. (Yes I do!) I get along well with other dogs but I might need a little time to adjust to my new environment. I am doggy door trained. I am spayed, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. My adoption fee is $80. Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Snoop Dawg! Snoop is male, Jack Russell Terrier mix that is approximately 4 years old and weighs 20 lbs. Snoop came to us from the Yuma Humane Society. Having never evaluated him personally I wasn’t sure what to expect. I quickly discovered he was an amazing dog that was willing to trust me right from the start. Snoop was just a tiny bit shy for a minute or two. Then we had a talk and shared an egg sandwich and just that quickly - I made a wonderful new friend! There is a lot to love about this pup! He has a beautiful disposition! Snoop Dawg is very smart and a quick learner. He is housebroken and he very rarely barks. He does well in his crate for short periods of time and he rides well in the car. He’s past the puppy, teething, and destructive stages of life and can occupy himself happily exploring the sights and smells in the backyard and playing. He LOVES to play with toys and he LOVES to be with his people. He’s great on a leash and would love to go for walks or hikes with his new family. Snoop Dawg does fine with the other dogs in his foster home but he doesn’t engage in play with them. If he’s not hanging out with his person he kind of just likes to do his own thing. Last, but never least, Snoop Dawg is a very good cuddler! Snoop is a pleasure to foster and I think he’ll transition easily into his new forever family. Snoop is neutered, dewormed, up-to-date on vaccines and comes with a lifetime registration microchip. His adoption fee is $180. If you would like to meet/adopt Snoop Dawg please fill out an online adoption application on the Animal Rescue Friends website and one of our volunteers will contact you. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Meet Finn! He is listed as a 'lab mix' from the shelter we saved him from. We tend to think he has cattle dog in him as he seems to want to herd. He is on the smaller size, about 25 lbs. Very intelligent and loyal. He is high energy and loves to play catch. His ideal home would be as an only dog because he is dog selective. His breed and play style are very 'mouthy' so no younger children. This guys deserves and wants your attention. Adopt Finn for $180 Apply at www.animalrescuefriends.org
