A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Meet Annabelle! Annabelle is 3 ½ year old, female, tan Chihuahua mix. Annabelle is a sweet pup with a slightly quirky personality that is sure to make you smile. Annabelle is confident and adaptable. She is ready to join you in whatever plans you have for the day. She is friendly with new people and gets along well with other dogs. She loves to cuddle up in the lap of her person. While Annabelle is a cuddle bug, she is not overly needy. She will find ways to amuse herself when her people are busy. She likes to play with stuffed squeaky toys and she likes chew toys as well. She is happy to explore the yard and house. She also enjoys moving the dog beds from room to room. She's not destructive at all, she just likes rearranging things from time to time. If Annabelle disappears from view you should look under the covers at the foot of your bed. That’s her favorite place to nap when her persons lap is not available. She is like a baby, she gets a little grouchy if she hasn’t had her afternoon nap. She will just take herself in and put herself to bed. Cute! She also likes to sleep in the bed with her person at night. Annabelle can be possessive of her food at meal time so we recommend she eats separately from other dogs. She currently uses potty pads and a doggy door. Annabelle usually has floppy ears, but on occasion she will raise one or both ears for extra cuteness. She is a great watch dog and will let you know if someone or something is in your yard. She has a good sense of smell and excellent hearing. Her facial expressions make me laugh every day. Annabelle is spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccines. Annabelle’s adoption fee is $150. If you would like to meet Annabelle, please submit a dog adoption application on our website at www.animalrescuefriends.org and one of our volunteers will call you. www.animalrescuefriends.org

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Teos is a friendly active 2 yr old chi.  He is unique with a black spot on his back.  He likes to sit in your lap and he gives nice nose kisses.  He plays well on his own.  He walks well on a leash. He knows how to use a dog door. An intro to other dogs is recommended as he can be cautious initially.

      Breed: Beagle-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Surprise, AZ
Posted Breed: Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Johnnie is a 5 month old male Beagle mix puppy. He is mostly cream colored with a light beige circle on his side. Johnnie is an outgoing boy who loves to play and is good with both large and small dogs. He loves sharing a dog bed and playing with his 112 lb canine foster sibling! When Johnnie gets drowsy he sticks his tongue out a tiny bit. (See the second picture of him posted.) Johnnie is so funny and loving. He has won the hearts of all of us here on the ARF Team. They just don't come any sweeter than this pup! Born in rescue; this little fella had a few seizures after he was weaned. Our vet put him on medication and he has been episode free for several months. As he is still a puppy it's unknown if Johnnie will need to remain on seizure medicine as an adult. If so, his future family would have a medication expense of around $30 per month. Johnnie is thriving and enjoying puppy life to the fullest now! It’s time to find him his forever family. Adopt Johnnie for $180 and be prepared to fall in love!
