Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Tonya Griffith (TMSGriffith@aol.com) for more information about this pet. This dog's mother was found 12/8/03 eating garbage on the side of a road, when I gave her some food and snacks she took me to her puppies where no food or water dishes were located in the middle of a pasture. The owner was later contacted and did not make any effort on their behalf. The mother is a red hound with blue eyes named Susie. The puppies were about 4 weeks old when they were found. Trevor is very friendly and good with other dogs. He does like to dig out of the perimeter fence at night to chase after things that come out at night in the woods, so I built a large dog house that he can be locked in at night, and he doesn't make a mess in it, even though there is plenty of room, so being in a house should not be too much more of an effort in training. D.O.B.: ? November 2003 Weight: 43.1 - 4/14/04 Mother: Susie Siblings: Charlie, Darla, Bess, Brandy $55 adoption fee will pay for his neuter and vaccinations.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Harry lived in Arp and had dogs dumped on his road through the years and never had the funds to fix the dogs since he lives on disability. We helped him with food and spays/neuters. The father to Haley may be Wild Thing, who appears to be a White Lab, and Baby Face is the mother, who appears to be a Hound/Shepherd mix. Harry had to move from his home in Arp, and Haley came to our location when he couldn't take all the dogs with him. Haley is very shy, so she needs a special loving home that will be patient with her and work with her. D.O.B.: ? 2004 Weight: 37.8 - 3/5/08 $65 adoption fee will pay for her spay and vaccinations.

Gary lost his job of 7 years when the economy went bad, and has not been able to find another permanent job yet. Gary received an eviction notice 2/10/11, and all the cats and 2 dogs at his house were surrendered to us to find new homes. Posted 4/5/11, and pictures taken 3/6/11. Lex is very sweet, but can be skittish of new people. He use to be afraid to come near me, but in a short time has become very loveable with me. Lex and his sibling were puppies at a Wal-Mart parking lot when Gary and Penny took them. The owners couldn't find a home for them, and were just going to leave them in the parking lot. D.O.B.: ? 2003 or 2004 Weight: about 50 pounds $80.00 adoption fee will pay for his neuter and vaccinations. We cannot do his neuter at this time due to him having heartworms. He was never given heartworm prevention until he came here. He is too hyper to give the heartworm treatment to, so we are keeping him on prevention for awhile in hopes he can be neutered later on. If he were to be sedated for surgery, it could kill him.

For adoption information, please contact: William Bishop 903/283-3780 road-ranger@hotmail.com Posted 8/30/11, and pictures updated 9/25/11. William took the Catahoula mother of these puppies from a neighbor that has many dogs. William is disabled and had not been able to spay her before she got pregnant because he had spent a lot of money having her heartworm treatment done, and now he has no income at this time, so he can't afford to care for them. We are assisting William with food, worm medicine, heartworm prevention, and had the mother and all the puppies spayed and neutered. William will be keeping the mother, but needs to find homes for all the puppies. William also has one cat, the puppies are great around his cat, and he has been working with walking them on a leash. D.O.B.: May 2011 Weight: 22.9 - 9/7/11 $75 adoption fee will pay for his neuter and vaccinations.

Harvey was found on our county road 6/6/11, and very hungry. He is a very happy and energetic dog. He is in a large dog pen with 2 female dogs, so we don't know if he is house trained or not. I tried to put another young male dog in the pen with them, and he tried to show his dominance over the other dog, so he would be better paired up with just female dogs. He is eager to be with people. He doesn't like being in the dog pen, and not being able to interact with us, but has not made any attempts of digging or climbing to get out. D.O.B.: ? December 2010 Weight: 46.5 - 6/8/11 $80 adoption fee will pay for his neuter and vaccinations.

Parker was found on our county road 9/10/10 starving. His ribs and hip bones were showing. His teeth indicate that he is only around 4 months of age when he was found. He is very playful, affectionate, and energetic. He is wanting constant attention and will walk in front of a person. He does great on a leash besides stopping and wanting your attention. His breed is still undetermined. We have one opinion of a Terrier mix, and he has spots on his body which could indicate Red Healer mix or possibly a Setter mix. D.O.B.: ? Pictures updated 6/9/09 and transferred to us 6/22/09. He was being crated at night and when I ran errands, and did very well, so house training should be easy. He followed me wherever I would go, does well on a leash, and his fur is Reddish Brown. I later put him in a dog pen due to him following me too closely all the time while trying to do my chores. D.O.B.: ? August 2008 Weight: 42.7 - 7/3/09 $75 adoption fee will pay for his neuter and vaccinations. Posted 5/20/09 for Kahne Parsons Walker. "I live out here at Lake Hawkins. We get a lot of stray animals dumped out here and there are practically no resources for dealing with the unfortunate animals. Recently someone dumped (or so I believe) a dog near our house. I did not aim to take him in, but he found his way into our yard, burrowing under our gates, and so like it or not he is here. I called the East Texas shelter and they are not currently taking in dogs. So, until I can find a situation, I will have to see that he comes to no harm. He is currently at the vet's getting wormed and receiving his shots. I don't know his breed or exactly how old he is. Dr. Hobbs thinks he may have some Australian shepherd in him by the look of his ears. He is very friendly and gets along with other dogs (even our male dog, who is very territorial). He is not yet neutered. He has lots of puppy energy, but seems bright and trainable. We really can't keep him for long. We already have two dogs and four cats, all of them former strays. You know how much it costs to properly care for animals and as my husband and I are both school teachers we don't have a lot of extra cash. He weighs 35 pounds and is about 9 months old (acc. to the vet). He has had his first shots and been wormed, has tested negative for heartworms and begun preventative treatment, and is also on Frontline. He was not neutered when found. He is as tall/long as his adult growth though he will likely fill out more. We do not know the mix of breeds that produced him, but he is lean and fast and can JUMP. (Someone who wants a dog who can catch frisbees or jump through hoops would love him.) I have taught him to fetch, and he does, in his own fashion. He still has a lot of energy, and that makes it hard to instill discipline, but I'll do what I can."
