Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Holly Campbell (hollyc@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. Meet Citrus, Sweet Plott Hound Longing for a Special Home CITRUS NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! If you are viewing Citrus' bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Citrus Breed: Plott Hound mix Approximate Age: 1.5 years Approximate Weight: 62 lbs. Currently Living at: Boarding facility. Please adopt Citrus! At the tender of age of 1.5 years old, Citrus found herself without a family to call her own. This beautiful lady has since been living in a rural shelter and now calls a Washington, DC boarding facility "home". Citrus has been described as a Plott hound mix and clearly has the instincts of a scent hound. Our guess is that Citrus has a dose of mastiff in her, which we can see in her slight jowls. Her coat is a beautiful black/brown brindle, with a striking white chest. She has a tall, leggy stance, and weighing in at 62 pounds, she is a very strong girl. She is an athletic dog and loves to run and jump. She will need someone experienced with dogs to take a chance on her and show her the world is a safe, fun place! She has made a lot of friends during her shelter stay. She's impressed the staff with her pleasing personality and earned a good behavior rating. Citrus would do well in a calm, but active family. She could easily assimilate into the active lifestyle of a single adopter or couple who have the time to focus on a young dog's needs. Citrus could easily join a multi-dog home, with one or two well-trained dogs. She would do best in a home without children. Like most shelter dogs, Citrus may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The fee for adoption of this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Kelly Wiencek (kellyw@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. What A Fun and Feisty Lady! LEMUR NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Lemur Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 11 months Approximate Weight: 45 lbs Current Living: DC area Foster Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: A firm and experienced dog owner committed to continuing her training and socialization. Would do best in a home with no kids or cats. Meet Lemur! This 11 month old shepherd/boxer mix girl is as sweet as can be! At about 45 pounds, she is a great size for anyone and loves belly rubs!!! She gets along well with most other dogs. Lemur would do best in a home with no kids or cats. Lemur has a playful, active and curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. She is great in her crate and likes to just chew a bone or play with her foster siblings. She loves going on walks, but she gets hot fast! She is medium energy and one thing she loves to do is swim! An update from her foster mom: "Lemur is a great girl and with structure and guidance she has blossomed in her foster home. She is a well mannered lady that likes to please and follow her human. She is highly food motivated, so training has been wonderful with her. She is great in her crate, and isn't loud. She is a vocal player and loves to wrestle with her foster sisters. She's learning how to play ball and going on lots of hikes and walks. We found out that she loves swimming. She is a total lover and hands out tons of kisses, and seeks lots of belly rubs in return. She also likes her personal space and just time her herself to just chew a bone and relax! She has a goofy and funny personality and can come up with inventive ways to sit on her dog beds." Lemur is still a young dog, and she will need an experienced and committed owner to provide training, structure, boundaries and exercise to be a well-behaved dog. Like most dogs, Lemur will need to work on her housetraining. Lemur will also need to go to obedience school so she can grow into a well-socialized dog! Lemur is dreaming of finding a warm and loving forever home! All she needs is a caring person or family to give her all the love and care (and treats!) she deserves! The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. Name: Six Breed: Shepherd mix Approximate Age: 1 year (DOB 8/29/15) Approximate Weight: 70 lbs Lived with: Dogs and kids Currently Living at: local foster Special adoption considerations: Six needs an adopter who is willing to work with him on obedience and manners. He is a smart boy and eager to learn but needs someone to be patient and consistent with him. He does well with other dogs and has lived in foster with young kids-- and loves them! Six will need to go to a home with another dogs to help show him the ropes! Greetings humans, my name is Six. My perfect family will make sure that I get lots of love plus take me to school and out on lots of walks so I can socialize with other dogs and make lots of friends. After all that, I am looking forward to snuggling up in my very own bed, getting some belly rubs and even maybe a few treats! I am a shepherd mix, and I have LOTS of puppy energy to burn, so an active family would be great. I also need a family who will provide me with structure and who is willing to work with me on basic manners. I am a good boy who is very enthusiastic so I need help channeling my energy. I also love other dogs so I hope I will get to go to the dog park or daycare of get other opportunities to run and play and socialize. If you have kids that would be super great because they have two of those in my foster home and we have a great time together. Foster update: Handsome Six is a loveable goofball who loves to run around and play ball outside but is also happy to crash out on the couch when playtime is over. In spite of his 70 lbs., he would like to sit in your lap, if you will permit it. Six takes a couple of walks a day, but if you are looking for a running partner, Six could keep up with you about as far as you want to go! Six is also quite a clever boy who knows some basic obedience commands like ‘Sit’, ‘Down,’ ‘Wait’ and ‘Settle.’ Six is highly food-motivated and would love to learn any other commands you would like to teach him. Six adores people and dogs alike, especially kids, and ideally would like to live in a home where someone works/stays at home or is retired and is home a lot, because he loves to be with his people so very much. He is well-behaved in the car and would love to be your shotgun rider wherever you are going, especially if you are going someplace that has French fries. He think French fries are excellent. Six will be an extremely loyal and devoted family companion who wants nothing more than to be with his people and doggy friends. (He never met a stranger. He is still learning that not all new people like to be hugged upon first meeting.) Even those kitty things are okay, if the kitty is not too intimidated by his size and his big puppy paws. Six just celebrated his first birthday and he thinks that a new forever family would make the best birthday gift ever! Like most young dogs, Six will need to work on his housetraining. Six will also need to go to obedience school so he can grow into a well-socialized dog! The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. Name: Ginger Breed: Basenji/Shepherd mix Approximate Age: 1 year SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 30lbs Has Lived With: Dogs Currently Living at: DC area foster home -- Ginger needs a forever home ASAP!! Special adoption considerations: No cats or small children (loud noises and lots of running around make me nervous!) Hi there! My name is Ginger and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up in a scary place called a ‘shelter’ in South Carolina. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and I got to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! Please read below for more info about me and email lizj@luckydoganimalrescue.org if you are interested! So a bit about me: I am intelligent, attentive and loyal -- smart as a whip! I have been in a foster home for a month or so now and am quickly learning my house training and house manners. I love playing with toys and sitting by my foster mom's feet once I'm tired out. I also LOVE playing chase with other dogs! I lived with many other dogs for a couple of months and all I did was play, play, play. Once I'm tired out, I love to snuggle up on the couch, too! I am a champion snuggler and I always want to be as close as possible to my humans, nestling cozily in the crook of your leg or your lap. I've also got these great big ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about a year old and around 30 lbs, making the PERFECT size for an apartment, house or condo! I would do well with a doggy sibling since I like to play so much! No cats please, I like to chase. Sometimes I get a little nervous when small children run around and make lots of noise, so I would do better in a home without small children for now. I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoption coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, Ginger Like most shelter dogs, Ginger may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs and cats and a rabbit! Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: none known at this time My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). I am excited about coming to DC so my puppies can find their furever homes and I can get back to focusing on myself. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I have heard about this place where dogs go to hang out and play...they call it a dog park. I am interested in going to one of these for sure! I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I have lived with other dogs and cats and they are alright by me. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is a very loyal girl who loves her humans and likes to visit with her canine friends. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. We are very close to completing a successful house/crate training! She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She went on her first hike at Great Falls last weekend and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does great with other dogs and politely greets everyone she meets on her walks. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Hi there! My name is Sable and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up in a shelter with my litter of SIX puppies. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and now I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft tri-colored coat and big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 1-2 years old and 60 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs and would also do ok with a dog-savvy kitty. They are not sure how I will interact with kids yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. Woofs and tail wags, Sable Like most shelter dogs, Sable may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Sable has tested positive and been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Name: Mollie Too Breed: Am Staff/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix Approximate Age: 3 years 8 months as of 2/2016 Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Currently Living at: Foster home in DC area! HI, I'M MOLLIE TOO! My previous owners left me at my wonderful dog sitters home and never came back, so now I'm looking for my real forever family while I stick around their house for a while. I'm learning so much already in my foster home and I get so excited to learn and play! I LOVE TOYS SO MUCH. Also I've already done place training and I know how to sit, stay, come, shake, and wait! I even have great recall and am comfortable in my crate - how great is that?? I like swimming, hiking, running, fetching, jumping, and everything in between so I need an ACTIVE forever family to keep me physically and mentally exhausted every day. I live to please my humans and would love my owner to be a strong leader who can guide me in what to do. I promise we'll have so much fun!! I would especially love a job like a dog sport (agility?? fly ball?!) so I can impress you with how athletic and smart I am. At the end of the day, I really just want to snuggle up with my human(s), get some ear scratchies, and be told how much I am loved. As a bully breed a lot of people judge me by my looks and misunderstand me - I have SO MUCH love to give, all I want to do is please you and cover you in kisses...promise! Like most bully breed pups I am silly and have lots of personality to show you. Check out these videos of me (plus the one below my pictures) so you can get an idea of all the fun I love to have: Swimming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-DsawhiKFQ&feature=youtu.be Trying to eat wind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o73BX2xfMk&feature=youtu.be Playing with a big ball I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTXiaXLohaQ&feature=youtu.be I currently live and get along with a cat, so I am happy to live with a feline friend! I can be a little feisty with my dog friends (especially ones with personalities just like mine) so it's probably best I am an only pup who can soak up aaaaall of your attention. I do love kids but due to some minor food guarding I'm working on, it's best I live with kids middle school age and older who can fully understand my boundaries. As a super smart and athletic pup, I'd love to continue to do training for years to come so I can be the best behaved pup on the block. If you have the time and the energy for a big love muffin like me in your life, please email my adoption coordinator! I love my fosters parents but I'd really love to be in a forever home, could it be yours?? When transitioning to a new environment, Mollie Too may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name: Sasha Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix Approximate Age: 2 years Sex: Female Approximate Weight: 33lbs Currently Living at: DC foster Special Adoption Considerations: Sasha prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats, and would do best with children over 15 years old. I was saying to myself just this morning, "Sasha," I said, "Sasha, you know what you need? You need a person all your own." So I sat down to write this post for the nice people at Lucky Dog, because apparently that's the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable, doggies who are...I shudder to type this...HOMELESS. That's right: I have no home to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours? This little charmer knows she's got it and is not afraid to flaunt it. Sasha seeks a mature and experienced new owner who can meet her every need and spoil her beyond her wildest dreams. Sound like you? This 2 year old spunky, good time girl is intelligent, focused, and learns new tricks quickly. She’s quite the smarty pants and loves to show off her new skills like sit, down, and release for an audience of friends! Being an Aussie mix, Sasha will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to be a happy and healthy pup. She can't wait to go to obedience training with her new family so that she can bond with her people and become her very best self! Though we don't know why she ended up in the shelter, we know she doesn't belong there! This sweetheart loves the company of her humans but prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats. She loves playing with toys (especially tennis balls!) and eating yummy treats, but at the end of the day, Sasha loves nothing more than cuddling with the people that love her. Want to make Sasha a part of your family? Fill out an application! Sasha's foster mom says, "She likes to cuddle, be scratched behind her ears and on her belly, give kisses and take naps. Sasha also is playful and loves to chase balls, a frisbee, and her own tail. She is super loyal once she bonds with her people. She is a good house guest who respects her boundaries (she doesn't jump on furniture unless invited or chew anything other than her toys). Sasha also does very well in her crate." Here is a cute video of Sasha being a goofball: https://youtu.be/-3kDvL2ZDVI The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. PURVIS NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! If you are viewing Purvis' bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Purvis Breed: Lab Mix Approximate Age: 2 years old Approximate Weight: 60 lbs Currently Living at: Foster. Purvis needs a forever home! Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Needs a second dog, High Energy, Has some stranger danger issues especially around men- will need an adopter who is willing to work with him on this Purvis is a sweet 60 pound, crate trained, goofy Lab Mix who is almost two years old (in November!). He is very playful, active and has a curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Playing with other dogs is his favorite thing to do. Whether it's out in public, a dog park or a doggy daycare he loves all dogs. Sometimes he needs a slow introduction to puppies because he is practically still a puppy himself but doesn't understand that his size and demeanor can be scary to the little ones! Most of the time after an introduction, he plays great with them (puppies). He enjoys walks, jogs, hikes, swimming, chasing soccer balls and playing in the snow! After a nice walk or playing, Purvis loves to lay on the floor or walks into his crate and chew on a bone while you relax. Sometimes he has a mind of his own when he sees a squirrel or another furry friend. Purvis knows most of the basic commands and some tricks too: - Sit - Stay - Come - Leave It - Let Go - Down - Heel - Break(Free) - Off - Away - Get Busy(Bathroom) - Crate(Bed) - Shake - Roll Over Purvis will need a committed owner to provide more training and exercise because he is a very smart and energetic dog. He will need a patient and experienced dog owner to remind him who the leader is in the family. He is intelligent, so he will learn to follow your rules quickly but he needs someone with a firm grasp of pack leadership in order to respond positively to training. Unfortunately, Purvis was not properly socialized as a puppy and is a bit shy and scared in new settings and around new people. He loves everyone but is a big scaredy cat in certain situations and would do really well living in a home that already has another dog to help Purvis learn the ropes of how to be a confident pup. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations. Sweet and gentle girl looking for a FUR-ever home! TOMASA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Tomasa Breed: Terrier Mix Approximate Age: 2 years old Approximate Weight: 47lbs Currently Living at: A shelter in Puerto Rico. Tomasa will be making her way up to the DC area soon to look for her FUR-ever home! Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Tomasa has tested positive for Heartworm and is undergoing treatment. Hola! My name is Tomasa and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up tied to the front of a scary place called a ‘shelter’. So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft grey coat with a white patch on my chest! I've also got big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 2 years old and 47 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs and kids. They are not sure how I will interact with cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, Tomasa Like most shelter dogs, Tomasa may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Tomasa has tested positive and has not yet been treated for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The fee for adoption of a HW positive dog is $450 , which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
