Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Elissa Kurtz (elissak@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. Meet Citrus, Sweet Plott Hound Longing for a Special Home ADOPTION PENDING! If you are viewing Citrus' bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Citrus Breed: Plott Hound mix Approximate Age: 1.5 years Approximate Weight: 62 lbs. Currently Living at: Boarding facility. Please adopt Citrus! At the tender of age of 1.5 years old, Citrus found herself without a family to call her own. This beautiful lady has since been living in a rural shelter and now calls a Washington, DC boarding facility "home". Citrus has been described as a Plott hound mix and clearly has the instincts of a scent hound. Our guess is that Citrus has a dose of mastiff in her, which we can see in her slight jowls. Her coat is a beautiful black/brown brindle, with a striking white chest. She has a tall, leggy stance, and weighing in at 62 pounds, she is a very strong girl. She is an athletic dog and loves to run and jump. She will need someone experienced with dogs to take a chance on her and show her the world is a safe, fun place! She has made a lot of friends during her shelter stay. She's impressed the staff with her pleasing personality and earned a good behavior rating. Citrus would do well in a calm, but active family. She could easily assimilate into the active lifestyle of a single adopter or couple who have the time to focus on a young dog's needs. Citrus could easily join a multi-dog home, with one or two well-trained dogs. She would do best in a home without children. Like most shelter dogs, Citrus may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The fee for adoption of this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I'm not sure how I ended up looking for a home at 11 months old but I'm really excited about the possibilities. I'm a young dog and out of the true puppy stage, but I could use a training, a lot of exercise, and doggie socialization (preferably a dog park - because I LOVE other dogs!). I'm not sure how I feel about kiddos and kitties... I'm can be tested though - just ask! If you are interested in me, please fill out an application and send it to my Adoption Coordinator - she's the best! If you are viewing Purvis' bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Purvis Best Guess for Breed: Lab Mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of 4/17/17 Approximate Weight: 60 lbs Currently Living at: In DC Area Foster Home Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Needs to live with a second dog, High Energy, Has some stranger danger issues especially around men- will need an adopter who is willing to work with him on this. Purvis can only be adopted to an experienced dog owner. Purvis is a sweet 60 pound, crate trained, goofy Lab Mix who is 3 years old. He is very playful, active and has a curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Playing with other dogs is his favorite thing to do. Whether it's out in public, a dog park or a doggy daycare he loves all dogs. Sometimes he needs a slow introduction to puppies because he is practically still a puppy himself but doesn't understand that his size and demeanor can be scary to the little ones! Most of the time after an introduction, he plays great with them (puppies). He enjoys walks, jogs, hikes, swimming, chasing soccer balls and playing in the snow! After a nice walk or playing, Purvis loves to lay on the floor or walks into his crate and chew on a bone while you relax. Sometimes he has a mind of his own when he sees a squirrel or another furry friend. Purvis knows most of the basic commands and some tricks too: - Sit - Stay - Come - Leave It - Let Go - Down - Heel - Break(Free) - Off - Away - Get Busy(Bathroom) - Crate(Bed) - Shake - Roll Over Purvis will need a committed owner to provide more training and exercise because he is a very smart and energetic dog. He will need a patient and experienced dog owner to remind him who the leader is in the family. He is intelligent, so he will learn to follow your rules quickly but he needs someone with a firm grasp of pack leadership in order to respond positively to training. Unfortunately, Purvis was not properly socialized as a puppy and is a bit shy and scared in new settings and around new people. He loves everyone but is a big scaredy cat in certain situations and would do really well living in a home that already has another dog to help Purvis learn the ropes of how to be a confident pup. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations. Come meet Hoss and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (April 23) from 12-2 pm at the Rockville Petco (1507 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852)!!!!! HOSS NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Hoss Breed: Black Lab Retriever Mix Approximate Age: 1 year old as of March 2017 SEX: male Approximate Weight: 45 lbs. Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living at: DC area foster home. Hoss is a sweet 1 year old Retriever mix. He weighs about 45 lbs and, because of his age, may fill out a little but is otherwise done growing. We don't know how this sweet boy ended up in a shelter but it hasn't dampened his spirits one bit and he can't wait to meet his forever family! Hoss will need plenty of exercise and playtime each day to be a happy and healthy pup. He would love to go on daily long walks, hikes and regular trips to the dog park. After he's tuckered out, Hoss loves cuddling up for a nice nap and belly rub. He can't wait to go to obedience training with his new family so that he can bond with his people and become his very best self! Hoss is good with other dogs so he'd be a great addition to an existing pack or happy to soak up all the attention as an only dog. He also passed his cat test at the shelter. The nice folks at Lucky Dog haven't seen Hoss in a home with young children but he's interacted well with them at adoption events (though he has been known to try and give them kisses!) Foster update: 1. Not totally housebroken but making progress 2. Very good in crate; although he will bark for a short while if left alone but then settles down 3. Food motivated 4. High energy and needs a lot of exercise (ideally 4 walks per day and time at the dog park daily) 5. Adorable and loving 6. Great with other dogs 7. Great with people but a jumper 8. Good with cats - but again, a little hyper around them, so cats don't care for him much :) Like most shelter dogs, Hoss may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Hoss has tested positive and been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. Come meet Lucy Loo and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (April 23) from 12-2 pm at the Rockville Petco (1507 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852)!!!!! LUCY LOO NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs and cats and a rabbit! Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: Lucy Loo must go to an experienced dog owner who is comfortable working with a trainer to help her be more confident and comfortable. My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). My puppies have all been adopted and I am excited to be in DC to find my furever home. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I am a volunteer favorite at Lucky Dog! My fosters love me because I ride nicely in the car and am great at home. I am happy staying in and watching Netflix and ordering in but also love to go on hikes and like to show a fitbit who is boss. I also enjoy roller derby and crocheting. My ultimate goal is to become a spokespup for Barkbox Super Chewer. I follow Lexy the Elderbull on Instagram and she is a real role model for me—she knows how to wear a tutu and pearls and make it look so effortless. I have lived with cats and a bunny and do well with other dogs off leash. I get nervous when I meet other dogs on leash so I need my new family to help me work on that. Because they loved having me and recognize what an amazing girl I am, my fosters have sponsored me and whoever adopts me will receive a training package (included in the adoption fee) to help me with my transition and to get settled into my forever home. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy, wrestling with other big dogs and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She has already been on a hike at Great Falls and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does well with other dogs off leash. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name: Cutie Best Guess for Breed: Lab Mix Approximate Age: 2.5 years old as of 4/17/17 Best Guess for Weight: 40 lbs Currently Living at: DC Area Foster Home Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Cutie must go to a home with an already existing dog. He can not go to a home with young children or cats. Hi there! My name is Cutie and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up in a scary place called a ‘shelter’ in Puerto Rico. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and flew me to the DC area-- they tell me that someone here will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft yellow coat with a white patch on my chest! I've also got floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 2.5 years old and 40 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. I do really well with other dogs as they help me to be confident and brave- because of this, I will need to go to a home with an already existing dog. I will do best in a home without cats or young children. I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, CUTIE Like most shelter dogs, Cutie may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Name: PUDGE Best Guess for Breed: Retriever mix Best Guess for Age: 3.5-4 as of 2/2/2017 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 70 lbs. Has Lived With: Dogs Currently Living at: In DC area foster home Hello, I'm Pudge! I'm a big boy looking for someone to take me and call me their own. They say I'm some sort of retriever mix, weighing in at about 70lbs and that I'm somewhere between 3.5 - 4 years old. I wish I knew when my birthday was, so we could celebrate with a pupcake! Will you take me in and throw me a birthday party or an adoption day party? I loveeeee having my picture taken and would be happy to be all over your social media. I also love playing with other doggos and having dog friends. It would be great if you could take me to the dog park and give me time to run around with others. Update from foster 4/19: He is extremely well behaved and I will treasure the time I spend with him. Pudge enjoys going for walks and is rather quiet. He pulls somewhat and is active but does not bark at other dogs when I walk him. I went walking with a neighbor, her 2 dogs and Pudge, and this went great and he is well behaved. On Easter, Pudge spent time with three other dogs in a fenced-in backyard. Pudge would be a great fit in a home with a yard, however the most important thing to share is he needs a lot of love. He is timid and a lot of noises frighten him, but I am getting him out of his shell and we are able to go at his pace. He has been doing well with house training and goes in his crate on his own. When I leave and come back he doesn't bark. I love returning and he comes out of the crate wagging his stub tail. He is truly a special, happy and calm dog. Check out Pudge's starring debut on youtube: https://youtu.be/m6z_FISrhgY He really does love to be doted on and loves posing for pictures/videos. Perfect to put his face up on the 'gram. Like most shelter dogs, Pudge may need a refresher on housetraining. Pudge is likely crate trained. Pudge isn't sure yet how he likes cats or kids, but the nice people at Lucky Dog are happy to find out for you. Name: Simpson Breed: Shepherd mix Approximate Age: 5.5 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 36 lbs Has Lived With: dogs Currently Living at: Thailand -- Simpson needs a foster or forever home ASAP!! Special adoption considerations: Simpson was born and grew up on a dog meat farm in Northern Thailand. She needs a home with a resident dog(s), an experienced adopter, and a lot of patience! Simpson was rescued from a dog meat farm in northern Thailand. Thousands and thousands of dogs have been stolen from the streets of Thailand over the past 30 years. Street dogs and pets are lured and stuffed into wire cages where they can barely breathe. Terrified, they travel for days and days with no food or water. At their final destination they are unloaded from their cages, tortured and boiled alive and their skins ripped from their bodies in the twisted belief that this will make their meat taste better. More about Simpson: Simpson is around 5.5 years old, and although she is very scared right now, she likes to be around people and other dogs. In spite of the suffering Simpson has been through, she is still happy for attention, and is hoping that someone will see fit to give her a loving home of her own. Because of her cruel beginnings, Simpson needs another dog in the home to help her understand that she's safe. So, she can only be adopted to a home where there is a already a resident dog or dogs. At around 5.5 years old, Simpson will need lots of exercise to stay happy and healthy. And like all dogs we adopt out, she'll need to go to obedience classes to build a strong bond with her people, and help her become a well behaved companion or family member. Like most young dogs, Simpson may need a refresher on her house training when she gets to a new home. She will also need to go to obedience school so she can continue to be a well-socialized dog! The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery. SUNSHINE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!! If you are viewing Sunshine’s bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information. Name: Sunshine Breed: Shepherd mix Approximately Age: 4.5 year Approximately Weight: 40 lbs Has lived with: Dogs Special adoption considerations: Sunshine was rescued from a meat farm in Northern Thailand. She'll need a home with an experienced adopter with lots of patience. It could take weeks or months for her to adjust to her new surroundings. Currently Living at: Shelter Hi there, my name is Sunshine and I'm a 40 lb., female, shepherd mix looking for my very own furever home. The nice people at Soi Rescue in Thailand saved me from a meat farm so I haven't had very much time to learn how to be a dog. I'm trying really hard, but sometimes I get nervous. I'll need an experienced adopter who is very, very patient to help me adjust to my new surroundings. It could take me a while ... I'm a little bit shy and definitely look to other dogs for cues on what to do. Because of this, I'll need plenty of socialization and trips to the dog park. I might need to go to a home with a resident dog to help me learn the ropes, but we'll know for sure when I arrive in DC. Sunshine will need work with housetraining and crate training as these are both new concepts for her right now. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Kristen at kristenn@luckydoganimalrescue.org . Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Sweet boy looking for a second chance with YOU! SECOND CHANCE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Second Chance Breed: Boxer Mix Approximate Age: 3 years SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 55 lbs Has Lived With: Other Dogs Currently Living at: A cold and scary shelter in South Carolina. Second Chance is looking for a foster home, or even better yet, a FUR-ever home! Special adoption considerations: Second Chance is Heartworm Positive but has already been treated and is happily recovering. Hi there! My name is Second Chance and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. The folks at the shelter gave me my name because when they found me, I was in really rough shape. I was super skinny and pretty neglected, but thats all finally behind me. The amazing folks at Lucky Dog tell me that I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my (second) chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft all white coat with a black nose! I've also got big pointy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 3 years old and 55 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs. They are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! Woofs and tail wags, Second Chance Like most shelter dogs, Second Chance may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Second Chance has tested positive and has been treated for for Heartworm disease.
