Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet Monty. He’s a homebody…without a home, or a buddy. Monty is sweet and calm, a bit of a goofball, and has the biggest smile. His eyes are soft and beautiful and he uses them to gaze adoringly at the ones he loves. Like some people, Monty prefers the company of close friends and would rather stay home than go out in public with strangers. A great day for him is playing in his fenced-in yard, basking in the sun with plenty of belly rubs, followed by an evening at home cuddling on the couch. If you’re a homebody too, you may just be the adopter buddy Monty’s been looking for!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Hudson

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hudson likes to learn. Whether it’s his leash manners, sitting for a treat, or waiting patiently in his kennel, he wants to do his best. As with many young dogs, Hudson has a lot of energy for running and wrestling with his canine buddy. We’ve noticed his attention to his lessons is better after a play date than before! A perfect family for Hudson would be active and eager to include this energetic boy.

      Red

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Nothing is easier for our volunteers than to spend time with Red. He is quiet, neat, well-mannered, and enjoys attention without demanding it. Red takes things in stride, and seems content with whatever you choose to do. A long walk, maybe a little chase game, or sitting next to you with your hand stroking his back are all just fine with him. Maybe the best word to describe this beautiful boy is calm. Ask to meet Red when you come by.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Feist / Mixed (short coat). If Gracie’s tail is any indication of the joy in her heart, then it’s unmistakable that people are her favorite thing. Such a lovebug, Gracie just can’t get too close to those who pay attention to her. Sure, she’ll shake a pull toy for a minute or two or take a quick run around the yard but before you know it she’s back by your side hoping for some attention. Gracie’s a young girl, just a year old, and a great size – at around 40 pounds – not too big and not too tiny. This little lovebug is sure to capture your heart! Come see for yourself!

      Malcolm

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Malcolm just can’t help himself! All he wants to do is wag his tail, but he ends up with his entire body in a major wiggle. Malcolm always seems happy and he shows it with every part of himself. Running, tugging on a toy, or just walking on his leash are all fun, but what Malcolm loves most of all is sitting as close to you as possible while you rub his head and back. Nothing makes Malcolm happier than that!

      Dresden

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Dresden always has a smile on his face. That may be because everything makes him happy. For example, walks. Then there’s tennis balls. Treats. Tennis balls. Of course, attention from his companion including pets. And more tennis balls. Dresden is an active boy who will chase balls as long as you want to throw them. His funniest trick is trying to catch one when he has another in his mouth! He seems certain that it’s possible if only he practices a little more. That’s one of the ways that Dresden’s pure enjoyment of life seems contagious.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Cinnamon is a lady, a grande dame. Soft mouth, soft coat, and soft eyes all make you want to just sit and pet her. Cinnamon is fine with that! She walks well on her lead, is patient for her turn, and just generally displays good manners. Cinnamon does have fun playing with her canine buddies, but as the mature athlete she is. Whatever her activity, Cinnamon maintains her poise!

      Story

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Bloodhound-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Bloodhound / Mixed (short coat). At first you won’t notice but be ready – she’s a leaner and she’s a big girl! When Story sidles up next to you, she’ll press her head into your lap and before you know it her whole body is counting on you to hold her up. Soon you’ll feel like she’ll melt to the floor if you don’t prop her up! It’s her way of telling you how much she likes you! Don’t let that fool you though; this sweet gal still has lots of bounce to her step. She enjoys chasing (but not retrieving!) a ball and is happy to follow you around the yard, exploring as you go. She’s the perfect mix of lively and relaxed!

      Tyson

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). A big toy box - that is what Tyson dreams of when he thinks about a new family. He'd like it filled with balls and frisbees of all shapes and sizes and a pool! Of course, someone fun to play with is on Tyson's wishlist, too! An active boy, Tyson will keep up with a busy family and ensure everyone gets their daily exercise. At the end of playtime, Tyson is content to flop down for some belly rubs and kisses. Tyson would benefit from some manners training as he doesn't quite have leash walking down, yet. A little investment in training and he will be a great companion for an active family.
