Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet Monty. He’s a homebody…without a home, or a buddy. Monty is sweet and calm, a bit of a goofball, and has the biggest smile. His eyes are soft and beautiful and he uses them to gaze adoringly at the ones he loves. Like some people, Monty prefers the company of close friends and would rather stay home than go out in public with strangers. A great day for him is playing in his fenced-in yard, basking in the sun with plenty of belly rubs, followed by an evening at home cuddling on the couch. If you’re a homebody too, you may just be the adopter buddy Monty’s been looking for!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). For Sosa, it’s not about who wins the game but about the fun of playing. He loves a good game of tug. He pulls just hard enough to make you think he might win, but in the end he usually drops the toy so you feel like the victor. Maybe he’s learned that’s how to keep the game going. If you throw that tug toy, he’ll happily retrieve it and then dance around like it’s the greatest prize in the world. Such a fun boy he also likes to chase Frisbees and throw them in the air! After all that play, he’ll flop down in your lap for a little rest and relaxation. If you’re looking to add a little fun to your life, come meet Sosa.

      Breed: American Bulldog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Nashville, IN
Posted Breed: American Bulldog (short coat). Tito is the biggest strongest cream puff you’ll ever meet. You might not expect it, but this boy is really good at fetch. Frisbees, please. Tennis balls don’t do it for him. Tito will pick up several Frisbees at once, just to carry around. Tug-of-war is fun, too, but he’s probably going to win at that. If it’s at all warm, he heads to the kiddie pool to lie down and cool himself off. He doesn’t seem to care that he barely fits, and half of the water sloshes out. He gets the job done. Tito enjoys petting and if you rub his face and ears, his entire body jiggles as his tail wags. Ask to meet Tito when you come for a visit.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Malcolm just can’t help himself! All he wants to do is wag his tail, but he ends up with his entire body in a major wiggle. Malcolm always seems happy and he shows it with every part of himself. Running, tugging on a toy, or just walking on his leash are all fun, but what Malcolm loves most of all is sitting as close to you as possible while you rub his head and back. Nothing makes Malcolm happier than that!

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Dresden always has a smile on his face. That may be because everything makes him happy. For example, walks. Then there’s tennis balls. Treats. Tennis balls. Of course, attention from his companion including pets. And more tennis balls. Dresden is an active boy who will chase balls as long as you want to throw them. His funniest trick is trying to catch one when he has another in his mouth! He seems certain that it’s possible if only he practices a little more. That’s one of the ways that Dresden’s pure enjoyment of life seems contagious.
