More About Rat Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (medium coat). Lucy is a darling cocker spaniel who is ready for her new home. She was surrendered after her owner passed away. She is very drawn to men but likes women and kids too. Her favorite thing to do is play fetch, catch, or soccer with a small ball. She even throws it in the air back to you. Such a silly girl. Lucy will be 9 the end of January. She came to us with some eye, ear, and skin issues. (Typical for the breed) Her eye ulcer has healed already and the small growth is expected to go away also with the treatment we are providing. She had a spa day so she would look extra pretty for her new potential home! She likes to sleep at the foot of the bed with her people. She is also crate trained. Lucy is spayed/neutered, microchipped, negative for heartworm, and current on vaccinations. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi my name is Chloe. I came to CSHS after being at local impound and needed rescue for a mass I had on my leg. We got it removed and I was excited to do zoomies in the yard. I love to play with my other canine friends.I love to wrestle and get the other dogs to chase me. I love to snuggle up and watch some Netflix. I love to play with rope toys and play tug. Did I mention I like anything that squeeks too! I always wait to be told it's okay to come on the furniture before I get up. Well except for the bed I have learned I can always take naps there:) I'm 3 years old, house, and crate trained. Chloe is spayed/neutered, microchipped, negative for heartworm, and current on vaccinations. Breed: Labrador Retriever

      Age: Senior
      Location: Chaska, MN
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). ***Update*** Gunner has put on 15 pounds and is now up to 75 pounds. 5 to 10 more and he will reach his ideal weight. Gunner is a new arrival. He is almost 10 years old and has quite the story to tell. He escaped from his owner's yard and went to explore downtown Minneapolis. He was tragically hit by the Light Rail. He had some broken bones, a collapsed lung, and he lost an eye. And the worst part is that he lost his family. He is thriving in his foster home and is actually quite a goofball. He has been neutered now and we have the papers to prove it! (Given his age, it doesn't really appear that he was neutered) He gets along well with the other dogs in the foster home and likes to snuggle on the couch. A love seat just won't do the trick because he is long and tall and likes to stretch. Adoption fee $225.00 Gunner has been neutered, microchipped, tested negative for heartworm and has been vaccinated for Rabies, Distemper, and Bordatella. Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Chaska, MN
Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Hello future family! My name is Dolly, and boy have I been on an adventure for the last few months! Let me tell you ALL about me so you can decide if I'm your perfect forever dog. I hope you're sitting down because it's quite the tail! ha! Get it? Tail?! I came to Minnesota by way of transport from Tennessee, where I originally was staying at the Animal Humane Society. When I got here, they realized that in addition to having heartworm, I was very shy and didn't trust people all that much, so they felt it would be best if I recuperate from heartworm in a foster home. I was spayed (more on that later), treated for heartworm, and transferred to CSHS. About a week into my heartworm treatment I managed to get out of my foster mom's house and I was on the run for seven days! CSHS staff was really worried about me because vigorous exercise for dogs that have been treated for heartworm can be really dangerous. Even though I did a great job surviving on my own for a week, I was exhausted and lost a lot of weight and I was pretty glad when they caught me. I moved to another foster home (with a fence!) and after a couple of weeks I learned to be comfortable and feel safe in her yard and now my foster mom isn't worried that I'll be a flight risk at all. In fact, after I potty I want to get back inside and back onto my couch as soon as possible! At first I might have a couple of accidents in your house until I figure out my potty schedule and feel safe in your yard. When you first bring me home you should keep a leash on me in your fenced yard and help me get used to my new potty spots and all the new sights and sounds of your neighborhood so I don't get scared. I don't really want to talk about it, but my old life wasn't a very happy one. I get nervous with new people and it will take me some time to warm up to you and seek attention. I do love snuggling in bed with my foster mom, and whoever adopts me will have to be patient as I learn to trust them. My foster mom says I need positive reinforcement - whatever that means. All I know is that she calls me a "breathing rug" and while I get excited in the morning when it's time to get up, and I wiggle a lot when she comes home, I mostly just like hanging out in whatever room my people are in, cuddled up on the chair or couch. Because I was suffering pretty badly from general anxiety, I am now on Prozac and doing MUCH better. I will likely need to stay on Prozac or a similar anti-anxiety medication for the long-term. In addition, I am on a medication called Proin because without it I can have accidents. When I had my spay surgery done to make sure I won't have any more puppies (thank goodness!), they missed some bits. My foster mom said I can get a revised spay surgery once I go into heat again - but we don't know exactly when that will happen. Either way, you won't have to worry about paying for that - my rescue has it covered. I will also need my heartworm check when I hit six months from treatment - so sometime in November. If I still have any stupid heartworms left in me, CSHS will pay for my treatment. Oh, and there's one more thing. I do have hip dysplasia in my right hip, and because of that I will need to be on arthritis medication and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements for life. I am doing well on them and because I'm not a super active dog I likely won't need surgery. I am kind of sad because I'm worried that even though I am a super sweet dog and my fur feels like velvet and I have the best "puppy dog eyes" in the business, no one will want to adopt me because I will need medicine and some extra TLC forever. My foster mom said the monthly cost for my care would be about $50-60 for the Prozac, Proin, Rimidyl and joint supplements. That doesn't include the grain-free food I'm on (Taste of the Wild). Oh and coconut oil - my foster mom mixes it in with my food so it disguises the taste of my pills. She thinks I haven't noticed but it's so yummy and she's so nice that I let it slide. ;) I am (almost) spayed, microchipped, hopefully will be negative for heartworm in November, and current on all my vaccinations. My adoption fee is $275.00. If interested, please submit an online adoption application at www.carverscotths.org.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Chaska, MN
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. There’s a simple secret to making Peanut happy. Just give her a bone and she will entertain herself for hours. At ten years old, she is still very energetic and playful. She likes to sit on shoulders, heads, arms, laps, just so she can be close. A bit of a Velcro dog. Peanut is easily kenneled. She also eats in a kennel, but doesn’t seek out being in one unless food is involved. She can be rather possessive, especially where her aforementioned bones are concerned. She’ll growl and bare her teeth to protect them. This makes her a perfect candidate to be the only dog in the house. She’ll appreciate 100% of your attention anyway. That growling and baring of teeth is also manifest when anyone outside of her foster mom tries to pet her. Bones aren’t the only things she wants to keep to herself. She has tried to nip at strangers simply trying to pet her. Which makes her not a child’s best friend. Adults only for Ms. Peanut. Peanut likes the security of the fenced yard at her foster home, but a fence is not an absolute requirement. She likes to know where you are at all times. And she’ll happily spring to your lap the moment you sit down. There are days when she simply can’t be close enough, slamming her 8-pound body up against yours as tight as she can or draping herself over your chest just to make sure you know that you are hers. In short, Peanut is a little angel with a hint of devil. No bones about it. Peanut is a 10 year old Chihuahua who was surrendered when her owner could no longer care for her. She bonded very quickly with her foster home and we expect her to bond quickly after adoption. She weighs 8 pounds. Peanut is spayed, microchipped, negative for heartworm, and current on vaccinations. Adoption fee $225.00 If interested, please call 952-368-3553 option 2 or submit an online adoption application www.carverscotths.org

Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Mixed (long coat). Lisa Ann, AKA Princess, is a special girl looking for a special home. She is an 8 year old Pomeranian who has not had a very good life until now. She came from a breeder/hoarder and is not very socialized. Surprisingly, she does very well with the 12 year old daughter in the foster home. She does not walk on a leash and will run and hide when approached. Her foster home keeps a leash on her so it can be stepped on to prevent her from running. She will go potty outside when carried out and placed in the yard. She likes to stay in one spot and does not roam around the house. She was spayed and had a much needed dental done where she lost ten rotten teeth. She still has a bad tooth that will need to be removed but the vet did not want to keep her under anesthesia any longer. We suspect it will take this little princess at least several months to learn how to live the good life. Are you that special person? Lisa Ann is spayed/neutered, microchipped, negative for heartworm, and current on vaccinations.
