More About Rat Terrier Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Okay, so maybe we'll keep our day jobs and skip the interpretive karaoke. But this 9 years young terrier mix is about as sweet as they come, and she's ready for her adoptive home to sweep her up! Bitsy is a legend in her own mind. But we can't blame her, and we're pretty fond of her spunky personality and her lemur-ringed tail. From her foster: "She follows me everywhere, listens really well, knows how to sit and lay down. No lack of manners." The bed is her preferred place of rest and relaxation. Your lap is fine, too. Just so long as she is the center of your attention. And you watch her favorite TV shows. If the remote goes missing and the station is fixed on Golden Girls reruns, she might be the culprit. Bitsy would be great in a home where someone could let her out for a mid-day potty break, as she can have accidents if she has to wait over 10 hours. Which works out nicely because that's just an extra opportunity to worship her during the day! She is good with other dogs but should be fed separately, as she can show some resource guarding with food (we can't blame her, we don't like sharing our food either!) She has been wonderful with kids. She pulls a bit on leash because she's so excited to show everyone how amazing she is, but she only weighs 13lbs, so we can give you some great leash handling tips to help you out. Bitsy isn't a big fan of kitties, so she'd do best in a house with only canine friends. Yes, Bitsy is everything a terrier fan could want. Because we’re sure once you meet her, you’ll find a big place in your heart for isty bitsy Bitsy. My name is Midnight! I am an energetic, playful and cuddly boy. I am very people-oriented -- I like to be by your side all the time and I love meeting new people! (And I get really sad when I'm left alone) I'm completely house-trained and I love to play outside. In fact, I love to play all the time! Even though I'm already 1 year old, I'm still very much a puppy and have a lot to learn. I need some help with my leash training -- there's just so much to see and smell outside! With a little patience and a lot of love, I will be a great addition to your family.

Adoption Fee: $325 (Adoption Fee includes age appropriate vaccinations, Heartworm test (if old enough), Microchip, and Spay/Neuter surgery. From the Foster: Asher is 100% amazing. He is a gentleman who just wants to snuggle next to his people. Asher doesn't know how to play quite yet, but we are working on it. He thinks it is a little funny to chase kitties, but is also learning that is not what a gentleman does. Asher knows basic commands and will even wait to get invited on to the furniture before hopping up. He is such a lover and is just looking for his forever people to give him the love he so much deserves If you would like to adopt this animal, please fill out an Adoption Application on our website at https://www.carverscotths.org/adoption-process/
