Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Schnauzer / Mixed (medium coat). Barney is an adorable little muppet! We think he might be a schnauzer/shih tzu mix, maybe 1 to 1 1/2 years old. Barney loves other dogs and is quite the playmate! Barney loves people too...but he is a little frightened initially. Barney is a loyal wonderful guy once you earn his trust but that can take a few days so you need to be willing to give him space until he decides you are friend rather then foe. Once he decides to be your friend, he wiggles and wags and follows you around like a little shadow. Barney just needs a chance to see that it is safe to love you. {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Tess lived in a home for the last two years and sadly her family had to give her up. She needs lots of exercise but is a very nice girl. Tess is the most loyal girl and if you are lucky enough to make her part of your family you will never have more love. She would be perfect for a active family, she would love to run every day and then take a long wonderful nap. Tess was adopted when she was a puppy and you can read her story from then below. She now again finds herself looking for a new home. 4/11/10 Tess is a survivor. She made it out of the Fresno SPCA and into ACT, bringing with her the parvo virus. After a week of treatment in her foster home, Tess recovered and is now back to perfect health! She's all puppy -- bouncy, playful, and energetic. At night she cuddles up calmly with her foster family on the couch (and in the bed, if they'll let her). She LOVES people and is very affectionate. With her soulful eyes and permanently perked-up ears, it's hard not to fall in love with this little girl. {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Please contact Stephanie (info@cvtnews.com) for more information about this pet. This little bundle of joy is Chico! He's a little camera shy, but wait until you meet him. He has adorable little ears that stand up. What a cutie he is. Chico was returned to ACT after having been adopted out to a wonderful older lady that needed his company. Chico served as her loyal companion for years. He was her alert dog (untrained). Unfortunately, Chico's human had to be moved into an assisted living center and Chico was not allowed to go with her. Through no fault of his own, Chico is now looking for his second chance at happiness. Chico would be great with a family with lots of love to give. He would also be excellent with an older adult or couple. As you can see from the photos, he gets along well with his fellow small dogs but does not require a companion animal - as long as he has plenty of time with his people. Chico is now around 8 years old. He has lots and lots of wonderful fun loving years left in him. He loves car rides and going for walks with his friends. Chico is house trained and he loves to snuggle under the sheets with you at night. Call his foster mom anytime i f you would like to set up a meet and greet. I look really good huh? Atleast that's what everyone tells me! hehehe. I'm a happy dog and love to play. I get along great with other dogs my size. Big dogs scare me a little bit. I like kids also but I need sometime to get to know them first. I really like to be held. Give me a little time to get to know you (a few treats doesn't hurt) and I will be your most loyal companion. He would be very happy in a home that isn't too crazy but active is OK. Come down to the Sofia Center and meet me. I'd love to go home with you. If the answer is yes, then you NEED to meet sweet Honey!! Honey is a wonderful 5ish year old Terrier/Chihuahua mix girl. She just ABSOLUTELY ADORES all people-she loooves to be held, gives kisses and loves to cuddle. She just lights up whenever she sees someone:) She would be a perfect companion or best friend:) She likes other dogs, but is best with doggie friends her size or bigger. She loves to go for walks and wags her tail non-stop:) She has a common condition in her back legs called luxating patellas, which sometimes cause her some discomfort and stiffness. It doesn't affect her quality of life, and sure doesn't seem to phase her! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Golden Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Madison is a golden-lab mix with Swimmer Puppy Syndrome. Check out Madison's Facebook page for updates http://www.facebook.com/pages/Madison-Swimmer-Puppy/298040020275011 Madison "swimmer puppy" **UPDATE** 1/9/13 Madison is quickly approaching her first birthday. We had decided to wait to put her up for adoption untill 1 year so we could better know her abilitlys. Madison is in daipers and is getting frequent urinary infections but other than the fact she walks on her front feet is a perfect happy puppy. As you would imagine I WILL BE VERY VERY PICKY ABOUT HER FUREVER HOME. I have had Madison for 9 months and love her to pieces. She is also very attached to me. But That being said I do think that there is even a better home out there for her then mine. I would love to see madison out and about, she brings amazement and smiles wherever she goes. If she could go walk for the kids at valley childerns or at the veterans hospital she would inspire so many people. To see more photos / videos of madison check out her FB page. If you think you have the best home in the world for her then feel free to fill out a application. I will be doing a home check so local adopters only. Swimmer puppies have ribs that bow out, the heart and other organs may be pushed into the pleural cavity and displace or decrease the air volume of the lungs; as a result, untreated pups become lethargic, lacking in energy and strength. The hind legs typically are extremely weak; they may be tucked under the torso or extend behind the pup, but in either case they have little or no movement. Water therapy and massage may be beneficial to improve coordination, muscle development, and better circulation. Madison is a happy, little angel! She’s a real fighter; two in her litter died from Parvo. She loves playing and barking and being cuddled. With only one short week of massage therapy, her little hind legs have gone from being limp to showing movement and strength. We see this as a very promising sign that someday Madison will be running with the big dogs! {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption. Posted Breed: Terrier / Chihuahua (short coat). Hi my name is Annabelle. I had puppies really young and have not had a chance to be a puppy myself. Now that I am on my own. My puppies went to other foster homes. I just want to be on my foster MoM's lap. She laughs because I even let the big stinky cat sit on me as long as I get to sit with her. I am learning how to get along with cats.:) I have learned that it is best to go to the bathroom outside. My foster Mom gets really happy when I do. So now I go to the bathroom outside all the time. I still get nervous when other people come around me. I am trying not to though. I have learned that treats are a really good thing. I have learned alot since I have come to my Foster home and I am still learning more every day. It was scary all the places I have been. I think things are going to get better. I am looking for some one that is going to love me forever and want me to sit on them and Love them. They can even pet me if they want to. {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption. Tippy Toes

      rescue
      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Fresno, CA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Our Denny's pups were born in a pile of railroad ties behind a local Denny's restaurant. Their mom, Tippy Toes, had become quite a local celebrity frequenting local eateries and getting handouts. She evaded capture for many months. Once the puppies were born local rescue groups stepped up their efforts, knowing how dangerous it was for the puppies. Tippy was finally trapped using the puppies as bait. The whole family is doing wonderfully. The puppies will be available anytime after the 24th of August you can see them on the website: they all start with the name "Denny's" UPDATE 10/4/12: Tippy Toes is adjusting well! While she is still timid, she has become very playful and actually loves attention. She now comes to her foster mom but usually plays hard-to-get for everyone else in the family. Her days surviving on the streets are gone and she's learning to live life as a pampered pooch with sofa privileges. While she needs a little more work with leash training, Tippy is ready for her forever home with someone that is going to be patient in building a lasting relationship. UPDATE 11/4/2014: Tippy has adjusted to human companionship and family life well. While she can still be guarded when meeting new people, she has also shown us that she can build meaningful relationships. With a little patience, training, and love, Tippy will be a perfect fit for the right family. Tippy would enjoy a family with older children (or visiting grandchildren), daily walks or even hikes through the hills (on a leash of course), sofa time, and maybe even a little travel. Tippy gets along well with most dogs, she doesn't mind cats, is crate trained and mostly housetrained {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption.
