More About Treeing Walker Coonhound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Husky-Unknown Mix

Posted Breed: Husky / Mixed (long coat). Domino is a handsome old Husky mix, about 60 lbs from the Peachtree area of Cherokee County. He was abandoned to die when his owners moved to Tennessee. His owners had never let him inside but he had been fixed and his tail was bobbed which must have happened years ago when he was young. He was also house-trained at input. Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Murphy, NC
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Blue is an incredibly handsome, 2 year old, 55 lb, neutered male purebred "blue" pit bull with white on his chest. He was from a breeder in Atlanta. His family lived in a rental house in Murphy, NC and were not allowed to have an inside dog. Blue wandered off again and again, slipping his collar on a line, and ending up in Lost Dogs Run. He is being fostered with 11 other dogs, goes in and out through a doggy door, and roams a hundred feet or so in the adjacent woods. He loves being indoors and now that he has a home, he does not wander away. Blue is fully vetted and heartworm negative. This sweet boy is soooo--- friendly, sleeps in his foster's arms in the bed at night and just wants to be around humans. He likes to chew on sticks. He shows no aggression towards other dogs and has not been checked with cats but is probably totally non-aggressive towards them as well. If you are interested in adopting Blue, please contact Ron Stoessell at 985-630-1613 or by email at ronstoessell@gmail.com. He has to live inside a home with access to the outside and into a fenced yard if it is an urban environment.

      Breed: Chinese Shar-Pei-Mountain Cur Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Murphy, NC
Posted Breed: Shar Pei / Mountain Cur / Mixed (medium coat). Socks (Socky) is an adorable young mix of Shar Pei (check out her small ears) and probably Kimmer Cur as judged from the colors of her coat and general size. She was 9 months old at input and weighed 33 pounds. She is now (5-1-16) about two years old and weighs about 35 lbs. Socks has been spayed and is up to date on her vaccines and tested negative for heart worms. Socks was abandoned by a family in Robbinsville, North Carolina when they moved and saved by a neighbor who was her initial foster. She was house-trained and socialized with her foster's 5 dogs and is sweet and friendly. Socks likes to be outdoors and would require a fenced yard for her protection although she doesn't run off when outside. Her current foster has 2 other dogs (pit bull and Labrador retriever) and she gets along fine with everyone. She is somewhat shy at first but loves to play and likes to sleep on the bed in the arms of her foster and enjoys a few sips of Chardonnay in the afternoon. This is a wonderful dog. If you are interested in providing a home for Socks, please contact Ron Stoessell at 985-630-1613 or at ronstoesssell@gmail.com or her foster Cindy Mulkey at 828-557-4263.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Murphy, NC
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (long coat). Shadow is a 4 year old, 80 lb black Labrador retriever mix. She has beautiful fur and is fully vetted. Shadow was an owner surrender because she was blind with cataracts. She is being tested at the University of Tennessee vet school to see if cataract removal and insertion of new lenses is an option. Shadow is house trained and uses a doggy door. She has no problem with other dogs and stays close to her foster's side. She will need a fenced yard for her own safety. Shadow loves to sleep in your arms. She is a sweet, wonderful dog who loves people and children. Shadow had her eye operation on her right eye and has limited vision in that eye. The other eye had a detached retina so cataract surgery would not have helped her have sight in that eye. She may have retina degeneration in the right eye but so far (after 2 months) the eyesight has been stable. She loves to swim and go long walks in the woods.
