The Yorkshire Terrier, affectionately known as a "Yorkie," is a popular small dog breed originating from 19th-century Yorkshire, England, where they were initially used to catch rats in clothing mills. Despite their diminutive size, typically weighing between 4 to 7 pounds, they possess a big personality. Key physical characteristics include a compact body, a small head, and their most distinctive feature: a long, silky, straight coat that is a striking steel blue on the body and tail, and a rich golden tan on the head and chest. Temperamentally, Yorkies are known for being spunky, intelligent, and confident, often displaying a surprisingly bold nature. They are generally adaptable and can thrive in various living situations, making them well-suited for apartment living due to their small stature and moderate exercise needs. With proper socialization, they can be wonderful companions for families, though their delicate size means they are better suited to homes with older, more considerate children.
