The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, or "Swissie," is a magnificent and ancient breed with roots tracing back to the Swiss Alps, where they served as all-purpose farm dogs, herding livestock, guarding property, and pulling carts. Physically, they are large, powerful canines distinguished by their striking tricolored coat—black with rich rust and white markings—and a sturdy, muscular build. Their expression is often described as intelligent and gentle, reflecting their inherent nature. Temperamentally, Swissies are known for being devoted, good-natured, and confident, making them excellent family companions when properly socialized. While adaptable, their size and need for moderate exercise mean they are generally better suited for homes with yards rather than small apartments, though they are calm indoors.
