Sarplaninac (Illyrian Sheepdog )
A.K.A.: Illyrian Sheepdog, Sarplaninec, Jugoslovenski Ovcarski Pas Sarplaninac, Macedonian-Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog, Ovčar, Šarac, Šarplaninac
Overview:
The majestic Sarplaninac, also known as the Illyrian Sheepdog, hails from the mountainous regions of Southeastern Europe, where it has traditionally served as a formidable livestock guardian. This ancient breed is instantly recognizable by its large, powerful build, dense double coat (typically solid colors like iron grey, fawn, or white), and deep chest, all contributing to its imposing presence. Beneath the protective exterior lies a temperament that is generally calm, independent, and fiercely loyal to its family. While incredibly protective of its charges, a Sarplaninac can be a wonderful companion for experienced owners who understand and respect its guardian instincts. They are definitely not suited for apartment living, thriving instead in homes with ample outdoor space and a job to do. With proper socialization from a young age, they can coexist well with children and other pets, though their sheer size necessitates supervision. Health-wise, they are generally robust, but like many large breeds, they can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, and occasionally bloat.
