Overview:
The Small Münsterländer is a versatile and intelligent gun dog originating from the Münster region of Germany in the early 20th century, bred for pointing and retrieving. Physically, they are a medium-sized, elegant breed, typically weighing between 40-60 pounds and standing 19-22 inches tall, characterized by their beautiful, dense, medium-length coat, often liver and white or black and white, with distinctive feathering on the legs and tail. Temperamentally, they are known for being friendly, eager-to-please, and highly trainable, making them excellent companions for active families. While adaptable, their energy levels and need for mental stimulation mean they thrive best in homes with a yard and daily exercise, rather than small apartments. Generally a healthy breed with a lifespan of 12-14 years, some notable health considerations include potential for hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as eye conditions like progressive retinal atrophy, though responsible breeding practices help mitigate these risks.
