Overview:

The Russell Terrier, often confused with its taller cousin the Jack Russell, is a small yet robust working terrier originating from England in the early 1800s, bred primarily for fox hunting. These charming dogs possess a compact and athletic build, typically standing between 10-12 inches at the shoulder and weighing 9-15 pounds. Their coat can be smooth, broken, or rough, most commonly white with tan, black, or tri-color markings. Known for their spirited and confident temperament, Russells are intelligent, highly trainable, and exceptionally playful, making them wonderful companions for active families. However, their strong prey drive and high energy levels mean they require consistent training, early socialization, and plenty of exercise; they are not ideally suited for sedentary lifestyles or apartment living without significant daily outdoor activity. Generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to certain genetic conditions like patellar luxation, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and some eye disorders, so responsible breeding practices are crucial.
