Overview: The English foxhound is a medium sized dog with a long muzzle, long shoulders and long straight legs. The feet are small and cat-like and the ears are set low and hang. In some hunting hounds, the tips of the ears are removed (rounded) to avoid injuries during the hunt.
Breed Group: Hound
Weight (lbs): 55-75
Height (in): 23-27
Colors: Any good hound color.
Coat: The coat of the English foxhound is short and glossy, dense and hard.
Character: The English foxhound has a reputation of being an intelligent and brave dog with a pleasant personality. The breed thoroughly enjoys the hunt and can run for hours. When compared to the American foxhound, the English breed is a little slower and stockier.
Temperament: The English Foxhound was originally a pack hound, thus, it gets along well with other dogs and enjoys human companionship. It gets along with horses, children, and other pets, seeing as it is a gentle, social, and tolerant breed.
Care: English Foxhounds need minimal coat care. Occasional rub down the coat with a rough cloth is sufficient.
Training: Firm, no nonsense leadership is required. Obedience training should begin early. The "come" command is the hardest to teach because of scent distraction.
Activity: It is a very active breed that enjoys the hunt. Though it is slower than the American Foxhound it enjoys running and will run all day with very few breaks in between.
Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Health Issue: There are very few health factors in this breed. Occasionally seen are chronic hip dysplasia and renal disease.
