    Breed: Akita
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Blazer is fairly new to ARMAC and is currently being evaluated. Blazer is a 2 year old male who was taken to Montgomery County Shelter by his back yard breeder. His parents were seized on a humane hold two years ago for being outside with no food, no water, no shelter. The breeder agreed to give them up, but kept their puppy. He was kept indoors, so was not seized at the time. Now, 2 years later, the breeder dumped the puppy at the shelter. He adores people, loves attention and is very sweet. He would do best as a single dog. Blazer is currently being kenneled. He needs a foster home to help him on his way to his forever home

    Breed: Akita
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Manny was turned over to the shelter because he supposedly growled at the owner's niece. He has had no issues in rither of his foster homes. His first foster had to give him up because a family member died. No one would take her dogs, so the first foster said she would. Because they were males, we had to find another foster for Manny. Below is what is first foster had to say: Honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better house guest. He's completely potty trained and hasn't had any accidents in the house. He really loves our GSD, Greta. They have become pretty much inseparable. He's fine with the cats. If they run he will chase them, but we can call him off right away. If he catches up to them before we call him off, he doesn't do anything. Just looks back and has this look like "what do I do now?" He's been great with the horses. Shows little to no interest in them. He was very interested in the bird for the first few weeks and the one time she flew, I believe had he got her he would have had a before dinner snack. We started really correcting his interest in her and he's now figured out that the bird is absolutely off limits and now pays no attention to her. He can not be crated. He gets very stressed out in the crate and starts shedding like crazy, drooling, and really mentally shuts down. Once that happens and we bring him out, it takes him a while to recover from it. When we leave, he stays loose in the house and isn't destructive, doesn't use the bathroom, and just appears to go lay on the couch (he's left his evidence behind multiple times). We have left him in the house unattended for up to 4 hours at a time. He's extremely smart, takes direction well, and thrives off leadership. Once he figured out the rules of the house are not negotiable, he hasn't tried taking advantage of any situation and has settled into a playful, goofy, fun loving guy. He LOVES people. LOVES them. Anyone who comes to the house he greets immediately and will happily melt into the floor for a belly rub. He does bark when someone knocks, but has no reservations about us letting people in. Aside from getting on the couch when no one is home to tell him to get off and possibly wanting to snack on the bird, we have seen no behaviors that could be deemed "bad". (Honestly, who doesn't want a comfy place to lay down or a funky blue chicken for a snack). He does not counter surf, has not dug in the garbage, doesn't go for food in our hands, doesn't jump up on us (he will do a happy bunny hop in front of you when you get home though), he sleeps next to our bed on the floor all night, (he may steal a robe out of the hamper a time or 2 to sleep on, but he always returns it to you when he's done), and is just very calm and chill in the house. When we go for walks he does not drag me, he will give gentle tugs until I tell him "ah ah" and then he begrudgingly comes back down to my pace. He does play with balls and tugs when he sees our dog do it, but once she is done, he is done as well. I don't think he really knew what playing with toys was, but he seems to follow our dogs lead in what to do. I believe he would benefit with a female companion in his new home, especially one that is awkward as his current one, I think she makes him feel normal. Car rides- after our first ride together when I brought him home (he rode well) and he was very stressed we decided to take him on outings that didn't involve him being transferred to people. He has really started enjoying our rides, he especially likes it when Greta can come too even though he hogs the back seat. He jumps right in the car now with no hesitation, sticks his nose in the window signaling for me to crack it, and after a few minutes lays down and just enjoys the ride. I'll close my novel with, he's simply amazing. The second foster home says they take Manny everywhere and he is great with all people and good around othr dogs. He is okay with calm, male dogs off his property, but not happy about having them come into his territory.

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. KARA One of our long time adopters and his wife had adopted an easy going male from us, Cosmo. They saw a female Akita, Kara, on Craig's list and took her in the hopes that she and Cosmo would get along. Unfortunately things did not quite go the way they planned. Kara is great with people, but can get too wound up when playing with other dogs and escalate into a fight. They asked us for help in placing her and agreed to keep her until we could find a home. Al unexpectedly died a few weeks ago. Linda felt she could not deal with both dogs in the current situation. We agreed to take Kara and find her a home. Kara has learned to play tug and fetch with people with no issues. She is excitable at meal time but not food aggressive. She is currently being kenneled. Recently, she had diarrhea and vomiting and was limping on her right front foot. At the vet she was a sweetheart with all the staff. She ignored the other dogs there as long as they kept their distance. She had a laceration on her paw (possibly from fence fighting) and was diagnosed with Lyme disease. The laceration was sewn up and she is being treated for the Lyme disease. Although she is small, she is a little dynamo and likes to be in charge. She needs to have a home with Akita or dominant dog experience. Kara is curretnly being kenneled. A foster home would help her along her journey to her forever home.

    Breed: Akita

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Sampson was the last of the dogs owned by backyard breeders and was kept as an outside dog all his life. They wanted to travel and had no one to take care of Sampson, so they dumped him at the shelter. Sampson is very unsocialized, but is improving. Once he warms up to a person, he is very social and lovable. At the shelter, one of the Animal Control Officers would sing to him and he would do the “Akita Happy Dance”. He is currently being kenneled and adores the kennel owner. He is slowly coming out of his shell, day by day, person by person. When he was initially transported from Lee County to Richmond Va, he was so terrified at the transfer point that he just flattened on the ground. He had to be lifted into the second transport vehicle. He showed no aggression at any point during his handling. In a couple of weeks, the kennel owner was able to get him in the car with a little coaxing to take him to the vet. Again, while fearful of the circumstances, he was great with the vet and the staff. Here is what the volunteers who went to walk him had to say: "Samson notes: He is a big boy! He is shy, and a bit slow to warm up (of course all of them absolutely adore Stacey - comments are limited to how the dogs react to us). He's not aggressive - just wary. Walks reasonably well on lead, and actually seemed to enjoy his walk-about." He seems to be one of those dogs who has to warm up to each person he meets, but then is polite and even sociable. Sampson is looking for a foster home to help him on his journey towards adoption.

Posted Breed: Akita / Mixed. Adoption Fee: $250.00. Marlena grabbed our hearts with her goofy pictures. A 7 year old female, who had been taken to the shelter by her owner because they did not have time for her. The shelter thought she had mammary tumors, but according to our vet, they are cysts. She had a wart on her front paw which has been removed and is now ready to find her new home. She is more active than our Akitas, but does exhibit certain behaviors that show her Akita heritage. She is protective of her territory and will sound off when strangers approach it. She loves people !! just loves people!! She is a little more active than my dogs, but I am used to the calmer Akitas. She passed her temp test at the shelter with flying colors. Her aggression score was 0. She was okay with a large male dog, did not react to the child doll. She is a bit predatory and would be best in a home where there are no small dogs or cats. She will ignore small dogs untless they act aggressively, but her response is easily checked. She will try to chase squirrels while walking and pulls a bit on the lead..working on that. She crates but would rahter be out with her people..does not try to escape or destroy the crate, but can be vocal about getting out at times. She knows commands and since she is food oriented, is an easy train. Her tail is set on "permanent wag" and will beat you to death with it when she is very happy. She is a big love bug and just wants to have a family who will return that huge resevoir of love residing in her. We think her mix may be either boxer or pitt bull.

Hi, my name is Niko and I’m a 7 year old Akita who weighs around 95 lbs. Let me tell you a little about myself. I can be the biggest couch potato who loves to hang out with my foster family, but I also enjoy taking long walks. My foster mom walks me for 40 minutes every day and if she tries to cut it short, I’ll stop and let her know we aren’t done yet. I have very good manners inside the house. While I do well with the other resident dogs in my foster home, I would really prefer to be the only dog. I like older children who are dog savvy and know how to give me my space when I need it. You’re probably wondering where I came from. Freedom Farm rescued me 5 years ago when I ended up at a Ft. Campbell shelter. In my first foster home, I was the only dog and I loved all the attention. Shortly after I was rescued, the 2010 flood happened. My foster mom was so scared because her house had started to flood. So she grabbed me and my leash and we headed to higher ground. Luckily, some nice people were out in boats helping families and they picked us up and took us to safety. After that, I did have to go into boarding for a little while. That’s when a family saw me and took me home. Sadly, I was recently returned to Freedom Farm because I wasn’t used to having a baby around. Overall, I’m in pretty good health for my age. I do have thyroid medicine that I take every day and I’m taking glucosamine to help with my arthritis. I’m a sweet boy who loves to meet new people. Do you have a spot on your couch for me?Niko is located in Nashville Tennesee. Contact Kim at akitas2love@gmail.com for more information
