    Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Please welcome Petey to Worthy Dog Rescue. Petey was a family dog when he was a puppy, but now that he’s grown and his family has a third new baby, they no longer wanted him inside the home. They started keeping him in a 10 x 10 pen all day long in the extreme heat of SC summer. Thankfully, someone reached out to Worthy Dog to help this sweet boy, and he will be going to a foster home soon. He’s a very sweet and social pup who has grown up with kids, and loves other dogs. No cats. He's crate trained and house trained. We don't know about his leash skills yet, but will know more once he settles into his new foster home. Updates to follow. 8/15/18 - Petey arrived on trasnport and was calm and social meeting all the new people and other dogs. He's doing well with the smaller scruffy terrier in his foster home, and has great doggy manners. He's a social pup who greets new people well, he's also a young, very active dog who needs his daily exercise and playtime. His foster dad is arranging neighborhood play dates for Petey, and he would do best with another young dog to romp around with in his new home. FOSTER UPDATE - 10/5/19 Petey’s life has changed dramatically over the past few months, and he's fully settled into his Potomac, MD foster home. Petey is a very sweet and affectionate dog, active and young with a moderate energy level. His foster dad, Gary, walks him about 2 miles a day, and mixes in some backyard playtime and neighborhood doggy playdates for socialization. Petey is great with other dogs and would love to have a pup buddy in his home. This handsome boy is crate trained, house trained, and has already earned some free roam privileges in the home. He has OK leash walking skills, but will pull when he gets excited. Squirrels are his particular passion, both on the walk and on Squirrel TV that plays daily from the window overlooking the backyard. Gary says Petey is one of the sweetest dogs he’s ever fostered. He will make a great family dog, and is best with kids 8+ and older. He can be a food thief and a jumper, so he might knock down smaller kids during play. He’s very mellow when getting affection, and loves to give kisses and snuggle. If you are looking for an active, social companion, apply for Petey today! Because there are many more homeless dogs than there are available homes, Zack will be coming north in the hopes of finding his forever home and family. Dougie - ADO...

    rescue
    Breed: Mastiff-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). Meet handsome Dougie, our sweet bully boy who was chained and living in squalor much of his life, and had clearly been neglected medically. A good soul who had been monitoring Dougie was worried about his safety, living outside and in the path of Hurricane Florence, so she offered to pay for his boarding to keep him safe during the storm. Our team got involved, and after seeing his living conditions and his very large tumors that required attention, we knew more had to be done. Thankfully, Dougie’s owner agreed to surrender him to Worthy Dog so he could get the medical attention he needs. This poor boy was living with skin infections from being covered with fleas, had a UTI, and was heartworm positive after living outdoors without any protection. We had x-rays taken on his heart and lungs so we could monitor his heartworm disease. The great news is that his heart is not enlarged, and he’s not showing signs of advanced heartworm disease. We plan to treat him for heartworm once his other medical issues are addressed. We were referred to an Oncologist to assess Dougie’s tumors and figure out next steps for his care. Initially, they were shocked by the size of his tumors… Specialists rarely see a dog like Dougie who has been so neglected and covered in tumors that have grown out of control. The doctors believe he’s only 3-4 years old, but he had multiple large tumors, some painful and prohibitive. Dougie has had two surgeries to remove the three largest tumors, and we started him on Prednisone to help shrink or keep the others at bay…and it’s working. Amazingly, all three tumors that were removed and biopsied came back as low-grade or grade II, which is the most common level the vet sees. Now that he’s completed his surgeries and got these very hopeful results, the doctors feel he’ll be ready to start heartworm treatment soon. Dougie has fully recovered from surgery and has turned out to be an incredibly social, sweet, and laid-back dog. He has been in his foster home for about two months, living with mulitple other dogs and two teen girls, and has adapted well to home life. He is a very social dog who loves people. He has great house manners – he’s house trained and not destructive, greets visitors with ease, and has a very calm energy. He gets a little pully on walks because he’s excited to explore and has not had a lot of leash walking practice. He greets other dogs and people well on leash, and walks better with a harness. Dougie loves being part of a family pack and enjoys accompanying his foster mom around town on errands. His foster family hosted a work party at their house recently, and Dougie was the belle of the ball. Like many of us will appreciate, the 100-person crowd would be too much for most dogs, but Dougie loved it and happily mingled with anyone who showed him interest. He is such a good boy, and just a charmer! While we still don’t know Dougie’s long term prognosis, and the tumors could come back or more could emerge, we are much more hopeful from his good results and the smaller tumors responding well to the prednisone. What we do know is that Dougie is a very happy-go-lucky dog, who has thrived in a loving home environment. We’ve discovered that he’s a very social pup who greets everyone with ease and loves to be around people. He has a playful side that has emerged and he loves toys now, and always has his favorite Benebone close by. We want to bring Dougie to N. VA in mid/late December and start his heartworm treatment. We are looking for a FOSTER or ADOPTER to welcome this handsome, sweet boy to town. Apply today. BREED ESTIMATE: Mastiff Mix GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: ~65 lbs APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 3 to 4 years COAT TYPE: short ADOPTION FEE: $350 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/neutered/hw positive - will be treated for heartworm LOCATION: NEEDS LOCAL FOSTER FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to adopt.worthydog and complete the application. Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Macy was found by a Good Samaritan on the side of the road in rough shape, she was very thin and had some puncture wounds on her body. Thankfully, the Good Samaritan was able to get her into the car with little effort, and quickly realized she was very friendly but scared. She brought Macey home, gave her food and water, and the very next day took her to the vet for medical care. At the vet, Macy’s bubbly, engaging personality emerged. She wanted to greet everyone she saw, and was all smiles and wigglebutt, happy to be the center of attention. We think Macey already knew that she was safe and that her life had changed for the better. Worthy Dog is excited to help this very sweet pup find her new family. Macy was fostered in SC by the Good Samaritan who found her and lived with 2 small, older dogs. She’s great with the other dogs and wants to play, which the 2 small seniors did not always appreciate. Macy has great house manners, and is allowed free roam in home. She’s housetrained and not destructive, and her sole mission in life is to be with her person. She likes to curl up on the couch next to you, and will snuggle up in bed at night if you’ll let her. As she’s healed and gained her strength, she’s become more playful and loves her stuff toys. If you throw a toy, she’ll try to catch it with her feet, and bring it back to you. This sweet pup will make an excellent family dog. She loves to ride in the car, and enjoys meeting new people. She has not had a lot of practice with leash walking, but she’ll be getting daily walks and outings when she comes to N.VA. She has a very social, warm nature and would be great as an only dog or with a playful pup buddy too. FOSTER UPDATE – 12/27/18 "Macy is pretty laidback inside the house, but is always so happy to see you. She's great on a leash, doesn’t pull, and walks by your side. She still lacks the confidence to walk ahead of you, and is very cautious in general. A quieter neighborhood would be best for her. We’ve learned she really enjoys the company of other dogs and kids too...she's not as fond of cats. She would do well in a family where she gets lots of attention. She is very submissive and sweet natured, and needs someone who will help build her confidence. Another dog in the home would be ideal, but she would be Ok as an only dog if she has her human around. Macy has great house manners, and we haven’t had to use the crate. She’s had no accidents other than the first day, and no destructive tendencies when we leave her alone. She's extremely gentle with food, and is convinced she's a lap dog especially when you are driving." Macy is pure sweetness and is going to make some lucky family a very loyal, loving companion. Apply today! Posted Breed: Schnauzer / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat). NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!! Gilbert was found running as a stray in rural SC, and taken in by a Good Samaritan. He's still a baby and was out in the world having to fend for himself. Thankfully, he now has a foster home and is living with 3 other dogs (large and small) and a cat, and does well with the whole pack. Gilbert is only 7 to 8 months old and still learning the rules of home life. His foster mom, Tammy, offers this update. "Gilbert is an adorable, active, silly puppy. He's still in house training mode, but will potty outside if you stay on top of it and use the crate when you can't watch him. I take him out very first thing in the morning, and he goes right away. I've started using the crate when I can't watch him. He loves All toys - balls, squeaky, pull ropes...etc...and loves to play with my larger foster dog, Duke. When you are walking around, he loves to tug on your pajamas and pants to get you to play...he's so cute! He plays and nips in his playing sometimes, so I have to correct him. This little guys is a charmer, and a playful, active puppy. He would do best in an active home with another young playmate, or an family who has a lot of time to spend with him and is ready to be in puppy mode.
