Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Louie. This sweet senior boy was recently surrendered to the shelter by his family who was moving and decided not to take him along. This is so heartbreaking to see, and the shelter is especially scary for older, small dogs. Louie was terrified and cowering in his kennel, frightened by all the noises, but once he was let out to engage with the staff he perked up and his social side emerged. He enjoyed meeting the people at the shelter and a few other dogs, and is quite the spry little senior pup. One of our rescue friends from the community saw the shelter’s plea to help Louie and asked if we could take him in. Of course we can! We were able to find a foster the same day, and Louie is already settling into his foster home. The good news is that Louie appears to be in great shape, and was cared for in his prior home. He is in need of a dental, so we plan to have him fully vetted and dental work done before he makes the trip to N. VA to start his new life. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Meet Piper. This young pup’s life has already been too eventful. At only a year old, she’s already had a litter of pups and been given away three times. Her last home was in a camper in rural South Carolina, where she lived with multiple dogs and kids, and didn’t get a lot of TLC. Piper is long overdue for a committed family to love her and allow her to be someone's carefree companion. Piper has been in her foster home about 3 weeks, living with other small dogs and kitties, and she’s been a good houseguest but needed a few days to trust and settle in. She was fearful of being picked up when she first arrived and would squeal when touched. She wasn’t in pain, just needed time to get her bearings. Initially, she was reserved around the other dogs but has now started playing chase in the house with one of her foster siblings, and is showing interest in toys - as every 1-year-old dog should! Piper’s foster mom describes her as a very sweet, submissive dog who always wants to be near her person. She sleeps on a pillow in her foster mom’s bed at night and likes to burrow into the covers. She’s housetrained and is let out every 3 to 4 hours with no accidents. She will go into her crate when asked, but her foster mom is retired, so she’s not often crated. Piper is true a lap dog, and her favorite spot is on the couch next to her person. She may bark when a visitor comes by, but always calms down quickly. She has not had very much exposure to leash walking, so that will be new to her. We believe Piper would do best in a calm home; other dogs and cats are fine, but she’s not the best fit for toddlers. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!! Katie’s owner recently went into a nursing home and was no longer able to care for her. Her sister, who is also not fully well, brought Katie to our vet to be euthanized….and she’s a young, healthy pup! Thankfully, Britany, one of our caring volunteers who works there was able to intervene and get Katie into our care. This adorable little pup has some diet-related skin issues that are still healing and was infested with fleas, but she’s now on better kibble, the fleas are gone, and she just had a recent grooming. She’s looking quite sassy with her adorable ears and is feeling much better. When Katie first arrived at her foster home she was very scared and withdrawn…even a little nippy and grumbly the first few days. After a few days, she started to trust and as she realized she was safe, a more confident, affectionate Katie emerged…a pup who knows what she wants. Katie is being fostered by an awesome foster mom who also owns a doggy daycare business, so all her foster dogs get plenty of socialization with other dogs. She’s also met the resident cat and had zero reaction or interest in her, and she does fine around other dogs but she’s not a big fan of playtime. She’s more focused on finding her people to curl up in their lap and fancies herself a lap dog. She has been great with the teen boy in the home and likes to be held by people….so she’s not a nippy dog by nature. She’s still a little shy at first, but also very snuggly once she warms up. Katie is doing well with crate training and her foster mom is working on potty training, and she’s quickly showing improvement. She is adjusting to kibble and is a slow eater, so her foster mom feeds her separately so she can relax and go at her own pace. Katie only at people food in her prior home, so her foster mom has been adding check broth to her kibble to entice her. This affectionate, laid back pup will make a great companion for someone. Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Mixed (short coat). Welcome Lulu to the Worthy Dog Rescue family. This sweet shy girl lived outside with 8 other unaltered dogs when she was rescued. She was an afterthought to her owners; she never had any socialization outside the home, and little engagement from her family. She had multiple litters before she was rescued from that neglectful life, but is now spayed and safe in her SC foster home learning to trust people. Terrie, Lulu’s foster mom, gave her time and space to settle in when she arrived. Initially, she would shake and hide around Terrie, and it took her about 4 or 5 days to trust and start engaging. Once she trusts, she’s very connected to her person. She likes to cuddle up with Terrier on the couch, and sleeps in bed with her under the covers at night. She will put her 2 paws up on Terrie’s legs, and they will dance around the kitchen at night, and Lulu loves the attention and seeks it out. Lulu loves other dogs, and has a very submissive nature. She needs to be in a calm, patient home with other dogs to help build her confidence. She enjoys running and playing with her pup pack, and is very fast and agile. She’s also discovered her love of toys, and her foster mom calls her a toy hoarder. Lulu likes to take all the toys and hide them in her crate for safekeeping. She shares nicely when interacting with other dogs, but still likes to keep the toys in her safe place. Lulu is house trained and crate trained, and still getting used to leash walking. She’s so terrified of noises and sudden movements that her new family will need to take it slow and build her confidence on leash. A fenced yard would be ideal, but Terrie is working on her leash skills and taking her out and about on her days off to get her more exposure to the outside world. Worthy Dog brought her to town here she has been patiently waiting for family of her own. Arabelle is a sweet and loving puppy has been living in a foster home with several other dogs and cats too, and she gets along great with all of them. She's an affectionate pup who can be timid when meeting new people. That doesn't last long though and before you know it, she's ready to be your new best friend. Arabelle knows how to use a dog door and enjoys spending time playing with the other dogs in her foster's backyard. We estimate she will be around 30 lbs when full grown. UPDATE 3/17/19 Because Arabelle is a little shy by nature, we feel she would do best with a dog buddy in her new home. She is crate trained and has learned to go potty outside. Their foster mom typically leaves them in the laundry room vs. crated when she’s gone for longer periods of time, and uses a pee pad for back up. She's getting to the age now where she can be weaned off of pee pads. After Pippin's owner took ill, this loyal senior dog ended up living outside, tethered to a tree with minimal food, water, and care.Thankfully, it was short term, and after his owner went into assisted living, the family contacted Worthy Dog to help him. We took Pippin to the vet right away, and while he was filthy, underweight, and had some skin issues from being infested with fleas, we are happy to report that he is heartworm negative and in basic good health. We learned that Pippin was registered as an emotional support dog for his prior owner. He has good house manners, is very social with people, dogs, and kitties too, and loves going on walks. He doesn't bark,and is very calm and relaxed inside the home. He needs a loving, nurturing home to live out his senior years. Pippin is being fostered with multiple other dogs and a cats, and his foster mom says he's very well behaved. He won't jump up on the bed or furniture, even though it's allowed in their house, but they are hoping he changes his mind as he would make an excellent lap dog. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Corgi / Mixed (medium coat). This sweet little low-rider was rescued when the local shelter brought him in for his neuter surgery. He lucked out and had one of our foster moms, Sonya, who was working that day. She saw Turner’s sweet nature and asked the Shelter director if he had any interest from adopters because she knows that black dogs are often overlooked. She offered to foster him, so we, of course, took him in, and now Turner is living with Sonya, Rachel, and their pack of pups and kitties and doing great. He’s very dog-friendly and doesn't pay any attention to the cats. Sonya describes Turner as a very happy pup and says his tail is always wagging. She says he has the sweetest eyes and a fluffy/curly Corgi tail. He looks solid black in his pics, but he has beautiful auburn highlights throughout his coat. The hair around his neck is temporarily thin and worn, so we suspect someone chained him, and he’s clearly eager for love and attention. Turner is a confident, social guy, who is good with cats and dogs. He’s brand new to his foster home so we are still assessing his house manners to see how he takes to being left alone, how he does with the crate, and where he is with potty training. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 3/14/19 "Now that we've had Turner for a few days, I can tell you how great he is! He is very good in his crate when we go to work. He does bark a bit at first, but he's not destructive and doesn't make a mess. I usually throw some treats or a bone in there with him to keep him occupied. Basically, he's a laid back couch potato, who is h appy to be wherever we are. He does grumble/growl when he's excited but he's just talking to you, and has never shown us any reason to take it as aggressive. In fact, my dachshund mix Fella, does the exact same thing. Fella is always grumbling about something. It's a "happy grumble" if that makes sense. T urner is just a happy, curious guy!" We plan to bring him to N. VA on 3/30. Apply today to welcome him home.
