Breed overview
Finnish Lapphund
A.K.A.: Lapinkoira, Lappie, Suomenlapinkoira
Overview:
The Finnish Lapphund is a captivating breed originating from the Arctic regions of Finland, historically used by the Sami people for herding reindeer. They are medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 33-53 pounds, characterized by their beautiful, thick double coat which comes in a variety of colors, often with distinctive markings. Their foxy face, alert expression, and curled tail are also iconic features. Temperamentally, Lapphunds are known for being friendly, intelligent, and eager to please, making them highly trainable and wonderful companions. They are generally excellent with children and other pets, making them a superb choice for active families. While adaptable, their thick coat and moderate energy levels mean they thrive with regular exercise and do best in homes with a yard, though they can adapt to apartment living with sufficient outdoor activity. Like many breeds, they can be prone to certain health conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, and eye conditions like PRA, so responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups are important for their long-term well-being.
