Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Meet Stella! Stella is a sweet 7 year old, 55lb girl who loves to be with her people. She is down for going on adventures, so she would be a great fit for someone/family who likes to get out and see what the world has to offer. Stella is also perfectly content with entertaining herself while sniffing around/enjoying the back yard. Stella has very good recall so she does not require a fenced in yard. She loves to learn new tricks/training. So a confident adopter who would continue to work with her is ideal. She very food and treat motivated. She does best with reward based training. Although I have never seen her do it, she will sometimes get sassy with harsher verbal tones. She is house trained, crate trained and does well on the leash. She is very handler focused, so it is easy to get her attention in many distracted environments like at the vet or on a walk around the neighborhood. Her favorite trick to show off currently is a "sit," no matter what you may, or may not have for her in return. She gets along with other laid back dogs as long as she's able to be properly introduced. She does not like over-the-top or pushy dogs but finds it fun to play with more laid back/submissive ones. She would also be best suited for a kid and cat free home. Stella is being fostered near Fayetteville, NC. If you would like to add her to your family, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue.

Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
