Description

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Meet Floppy! Floppy lived in a home with 16 other chihuahuas, and after their mom passed away, her family did their best to rehome them. Despite their efforts, 10 of the dogs, including Floppy, were surrendered to Carlsbad Shelter. On January 11, 2023, he and 6 other seniors became Frosted Faces. Floppy is 10 years old and weighs 15 lbs. He was adopted not long after he arrived, but due to no fault of his own, he was returned. Floppy is very shy at first and needs time to decompress before warming up to new people and places. It takes him a little time to trust before being comfortable with handling. Floppy loves the great outdoors, especially going for walks and on hikes. Despite his short legs and being a senior, he has lots of pep in his step and can go for miles! We were so grateful when Floppy was chosen for a two-week Frosted Fling, so he would have an opportunity to blossom in a home environment. We received a great update from his Fling Mom, including that she wants to foster Floppy after seeing the progress he is making! "Floppy is a sweet guy even though he is fearful and distrusting of humans. I could tell during the first two weeks that he just wants to be loved. He followed me everywhere, like my little shadow. I gave him space to decompress, and in return, he showed me love. The first week, he slept in his crate every night. That was his safe place. But after watching Roxy and my cats get on the bed at bedtime, last Sunday night, he poked his little head up with a whimper, asking to get up. He's been on the bed with the rest of us ever since that night! He loves walks, exploring the world, and is slowly learning that he is in a safe place. He is cautiously willing to try new things. Floppy is a cute work in progress who has captured my heart! We continue to work on putting the leash on to go out for walks and removing the leash upon entering the house. I currently lasso Floppy to put on the leash on. It started with 3 feet away and now I can get within foot and toss it over his head. When we return from our walk, I use a foot long wand with a curved end to pull the leash over and off his head. He is no longer attempting to bite when doing this exercise. Once the leash is removed, he does a little victory run to the kitchen and back. It is so cute! Floppy knows a treat is coming once the leash is off. Taking off the leash is a bit more challenging for him than putting it on. But honestly it takes less than 30 seconds to put on and take off the leash. It is my hope that eventually, I will be able to use my hands to put on and take off the leash. Floppy will take treats from my hand, but I am not able to touch or pet him yet. Although, I can sit and lay next to him. Just taking it day by day, little by little until he is ready. Every morning upon waking, we go out to the backyard so Floppy can do his business. He will only go outback if I go outback if I go out first and stay out there with him. He seems to have a fear of being left outside. So, I sit or stand out there while he does his business. I continue to work with him, the goal is to open the door and have him go out on his own to do his business and come back in. Kids, dogs (big and small) make him scared/nervous. He prefers they stay a safe distance away from him. Floppy is cat tolerant, will sometimes growl if they invade his space. Other times, he will walk right by them unfazed. I guess it depends on their mood! Haha! Overall, he is a quiet guy, not a barker. Floppy walks great on leash. We do 3 mini walks a day, about 10-15 minutes each. He doesn't seem to want to walk more than that. He's kind of an indoor guy! However, he does like going to new parks and places; smelling all the new smells. Floppy is a good dog that is improving a bit at a time. We still have work to do, but he is showing me tha t he is willing to work with me, to help him gain more trust and confidence. Floppy would do best in a quiet, adult-only home that uses positive re-enforcement learning and allows Floppy to learn at his own pace. Overview:

The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
