Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (long coat). Meet Roscoe – Waiting Far Too Long for His Second Chance Roscoe is approx 6-year-old mixed breed with a heart as big as his smile. He’s been living in a kennel since December 2021, first with a rescue that shut down, and now under our care. We took him in hoping to give him the fresh start he deserves—but he’s still waiting. And he’s waited far too long. Despite everything, Roscoe remains an affectionate, gentle, and well-mannered dog. He’s house and kennel trained, walks politely on a leash, and is great with large dogs. However, he does need a home without small dogs or cats. Roscoe thrives outdoors—he loves to sniff and explore, making him the perfect companion for walks, hikes, or even runs. One of his favorite things in the world? Water. Whether it’s splashing around, chasing the hose, or going for a swim, Roscoe is always up for some wet and wild fun. But Roscoe isn’t all energy—he has a wonderfully calm, easygoing nature when outdoors. He’s non-reactive to other dogs, joggers, or cyclists and enjoys simply observing the world around him. He’s also a fan of car rides and loves sticking his head out the window to feel the breeze on his face. With his soft coat and gentle personality, Roscoe is a cuddle bug at heart. He’s polite with food and treats, making him a joy to have by your side. After years of being overlooked, what he needs most now is a loving home—a place where he can finally feel safe, cherished, and part of a family. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
