Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Roscoe is a 4-5-year-old mix with a big heart and an even bigger smile. He has been living in a kennel since December 2021 with the last rescue that shut down. We took him in, hoping to give him a second chance, but he is still waiting for a home of his own. He deserves so much more than life in a kennel—he has been waiting far too long. Roscoe is house and kennel trained, polite on a leash, and friendly with big dogs, though he needs a home without small dogs or cats. He enjoys being outside, where he can sniff and explore, making him a great hiking, walking, or running companion. He absolutely loves the water, whether it’s swimming or chasing a hose. Beyond his love for adventure, Roscoe has a calm and easygoing nature when he’s outdoors. He does not react to other dogs, joggers, or cyclists and enjoys simply taking in the world around him. He loves car rides and is known for sticking his head out the window to feel the breeze. His soft coat is perfect for cuddles, and he has a gentle, loving personality. He is also very polite with food and treats, making him a well-mannered companion. Roscoe has been overlooked for too long and is more than ready for his forever home. He just needs a family to love him for the amazing dog he is. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
