Description
Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Gracie was found running loose on S. Coulter, and rescued by our shelter. We have posted but she was never claimed, so now an SPCA dog, and available for adoption. Gracie is about 1 1/2 years of age, possibly some Shepherd/Husky mix, or even some type of Hound in that mix. Her coat coloring is black & tan, and she has one blue and one brown eye. Gracie loves toys and truly loves to play. She is a very sweet, outgoing girl. She is good with other dogs, but is a bit food aggressive. Favorite treat happens to be hotdogs. Do come meet Gracie at Amarillo SPCA, 11901 S. Coulter. Open Tues.-Sat. from 12 to 5 p.m. Ph: 806-622-0555.

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
